It's because it's a black-focused mainstream movie that's not blaxploitation or ignorant of race relations. It's purposely satirical of the "made it" black experience and metaphorical of the mainstream pressure to suppresses "blackness" in popular media, leading to a faux-sanitized culture of race taboo. It's not that big a deal for a lot of population segments, and even feels ham-fisted in it's portrayal to a lot of groups because of it's commentary's overt lack of subtlety, but the point is that too many people miss the message, so it was made to have a very direct statement embedded in it. That said, it is, in general, a competent horror flick that may get a bit predictable and hokey by the final act, but had a serviceable premise with a good balance of self-aware humor and self-serious gravitas. It's no "Shining," but it's at least as good as "It Follows," which is a good place to be.
