Science person here. The sun isn't on fire. It's plasma, Google it. At its core, the sun is active because of nuclear Fusion, not fission (we do fission now in those power plants) Fusion is made possible because the sun is such a fat ass that it pulls atoms together. Atoms are racist as fuck to other atoms, so they don't want be near each other. When atoms touch, all hell breaks out and they rip each other apart. All that energy used up in the Atomic fight is shown to us as light and heat. Because of free flying atom parts, which is smaller then normal atom parts. So that's also why we can be in space with out some protection, besides the air problem. Our DNA will literally be stabbed to death, by the atom parts that is thrown around, among other things. This is sometimes either be x-rays or gamma rays. Look up the EM spectrum and learn as much as you can about each length. You'll discover the reality of the universe.

The sun isn't on fire. Gravity is forcing the hydrogen in the sun to fuse into helium, which is smaller than the combined atomic weight of the two hydrogen atoms being fused. So through the principle of conservation of energy, what is released as a result of this reaction is heat and light. There is enough heat to ionize these gasses and transform them into the forth state of matter known as plasma to create pressure which acts upon gravity to prevent the whole thing from collapsing. However, eventually the sun will run out of hydrogen in its core and gravity will begin to compress it further, which will create even more heat fusing helium into other elements like carbon and oxygen, and the rest of the noble gasses. The resulting heat from that reaction will cause the hydrogen in the outer layers of the sun's mantle and corona to begin fusing into helium, causing it to expand into a red giant before the core collapses into a white dwarf consisting of electron degenerate matter that will exist in the center of a planetary nebula created as the stellar material of what used to be our sun dissipates.
