They probably would have helped, but it goes against my morals to take medicine that isn't "needed".
I've met a few Schizos in my time, some say the meds do wonders. Some say they make them feel worse.
It's pretty hit or miss, a lot of trial and error to find the right pills.

when I was really young I was really into school for some reason. There was something about it that made me happy, so that was my main focus. As a byproduct of that, I was a straight A student up until I was about 10 or 11

Around that age all of my interests changed and I didn't do a lot except play vidya or anything that let me dissociate with the actual world.

That's what we all do, some people just have more on their plate than others and need different ways to cope. I've seen the whole spectrum of psychosis in my short time already from prison to psych hospitals. If you can do this w/o meds all the power in the world to you, but if meds are what it takes even short term I'm glad your willing to seek help.

Bachelor, masters or PhD? I was a BS in psychology, but that wouldn't get me a job doing anything, so I got an MA in Counseling and became an LPC. Though, if you haven't chosen a Masters yet I would suggest social work, more marketable for certain.
