I've had a seiko 10 years now. Keeps good time and it has lasted. I'd get it over anything else. My dad has one he bought in japan in the 70s that is still perfectly functioning as well.

My recommendation is if your looking for something nice you will enjoy stay away from hamag watches and quartz. Seiko makes some sweet autos for around 200$ and tissot is also a very classy but affordable option until you can step it up into the higher levels later. If your going to buy quartZ just buy whatever cheap shit and throw it away when it's done.my current everyday.

I thought about saving for a Rolex, used, thinking it would be in the $1000 to $1500 range, thought I should treat myself. Nope, I didn't expect to be greeted with $5k for a used watch. My Seagull automatic keeps time just fine and by just fine I mean I haven't seen it been off by more than a minute after weeks. It would really take a minute or more deviance every week or two to make me say ok this watch doesn't keep time.

I recommend the Seiko SARB033, or one of its variants. Beautiful, plausibly sized watch. Great hand winding, hacking, reliable automatic movement. Sapphire crystal. Can be had under $300 on eBay. Can be worn with a leather strap, or the stock OEM metal bracelet.

I don't recommend Bulova. Shit brand. Not respectable. Fashion watches.

That's because you're evidently ignorant about how much work goes into producing Rolex watches. Everything is 100% in-house. And that adds a lot of value considering a lot of watch companies with scratch up a copied design, and throw in a movement made by someone else (usually ETA, Sellita, Seiko, or a cheap Chinese-based movement or clone). Also, parts aren't outsourced to China, like a lot of watch manufactures. It's TRULY Swiss Made, not just barely.

It takes a lot of time to complete one watch. And it's not just the watch you're buying. You're buying history, a respected brand, status, superb customer service, and an actual serviceable watch. And Rolex holds their value, and sometimes increases in value. Not a lot of brands can provide that.

That's why Rolex costs a lot, like other respected Swiss and Japanese brands.

Not gunna lie, the best watch I ever had was this one. Costs $50, took so much of a beating and has never lost or gained time. This thing has gotten smashed by kegs in a walk in freezer, splashed with scalding grease, coated in pork fat, been in a car crash that dented the lock a little, and even scortched by some fire, and it's still comfortable as fuck, keeps great time, and the only noticeable issue is where the scorch marks took off a bit of the coloring on the underside of the bracelet. I swear Timex is using some kind of black magic to make this shit indestructible, I haven't even had to change the battery on this thing in the 7 years I've had it.

Mechanical watches, which I love, are obsolete. And the only reason why they still exist is because our fascination with the old tech, i.e, the movements. And that's fine. Fact is, a few studies are showing mechanical watches are declining in sales. Younger people are showing less interest.

A smart watch, while not needed, is much more practical and useful in the modern world of technology. The only reason why I buy mechanical watches is because, to me, they're functional art, not because I use or need them to tell the time.

I prefeer Hamilton. They are well made automatic watches at reasonable prices. I love one aviator one at 950€ and the diver one in aluminium at 1250€.

If cheaper: Orient.

If more expensive: Omega (my father has one from my great father from the '70, never got serviced and still works lol).
