Being a gigantic faggot, but mostly the lower pitched tuning (usually) and technicality mixed with actual song structure. I'm not a shred-head, I like a chorus, just prefer when it is heavy. I understand that, I spent 10 years placing IVs and doing CPR (on dogs and cats, mind you) then got stuck in an office doing financial analysis all day and hated it. Thus the Uber thing while I figure out my next big adventure. My main axe is a 27 inch 8 which gets the job done, but I'd like to give one of the 29.4 inch Ibanez M80Ms a shot. I played one at Sam Ash and loved the neck, but honestly I can't justify the price for an Indonesian guitar. Something like an Ormsby HypeGTR 8 would come out to be the same price with better build quality, QC, and fanned frets.

That's what kills me about people who dislike metal. They assume metal is all we care about. Sure when I was 15 it was, but I eventually grew up, and learned to appreciate other music as well. Most older metalheads I know are the same way.

I can also laugh at the ridiculous aspects of metal, because lets face it there is a shitload of it. Try to point out the ridiculousness of rap or country to people who are hardcore into either though, and they get all huffy and defensive about it.

Absolutely. When I was learning I only aspired to be the most extreme motherfucker and listened to shit that when I listen to now is nostalgia but not fucking good just difficult to play. Once I understood that a hook (and a bunch of bouncing tits soaked with hundred dollar bills) was a good thing I dropped the all black clothes and learned to be a human that actually has fun and can talk to random people.

In between the decline of hair metal and the rise of grunge, there was a brief period where death metal was seen as the next big thing in loud rock and roll music that parents hated. A lot of people jumped on the bandwagon hoping to cash in. That's kind of why it became so comically ridiculous so fast. I actually think it has improved a bit since then, after the people who weren't really into it moved on to greener pastures.

I like Cannibal Corpse, but they always struck me as being rather bland once you get past the over-the-top lyrics, and album art. Technically they've always been great. Too great really. That's the problem. They focus way too much on technical perfection, and lack any real soul beneath it.

Possum is fucking filthy. My grandma grew up during the depression, on Sand Mountain, AL. She ate possum back then. She always said that it was something she'd never touch again either, because it is so fucking disgusting and horrible tasting. They ate it because they were poor, and starving, not because they enjoyed eating garbage.

Squirrel actually isn't too bad. Just a bit greasy. My grandma used to fry it up like chicken, or make squirrel dumplings. Her dumplings were legendary anyway, but both ways were delicious. And no, once I got old enough to realize that there isn't much difference between a squirrel and a rat, I refuse to ever eat it again unless I'm truly desperate for a meal.

It sounds like you understand both why I gravitated towards it then moved toward more solid structure and less extreme (while still heavy) bands. I'm no hardcore junkie, and a breakdown isn't a chorus, but some repetition and identifiable themes helps with enjoyment. Music for the listener, not the musician.
