It's definitely more of a multiplayer experience. If you play solo you'll get bored/burnt out much faster. Unfortunately most of my friends don't play D3 and the ones that do don't like grouping with any randos, so I usually end up running with a full group of randos myself. D2 was the same way, but had a much better campaign.
