Having replaced one before (in that house while we lived there), I can tell you it's not all that expensive to do it yourself, but my father (and father-in-law) are both handymen and generally take care of any minor house issues for us. The worst part of owning and renting land are the taxes and the government loves to raise property tax yearly. Also the wife works as an RN.

Austin is cheaper on real estate and salaries aren't that far off from the west coast. Doesn't matter though because most people don't know how to save and live paycheck to paycheck whether they make 30k or 150k.

Diff is, take away wendy's Carl and he's far less fucked on his unemployment check than Dev Chad with his 2k per month mortgage on a 300k house in Austin and no savings. Plus, Carl is more used to not having as much income anyway.

In the managers defense (I was a manager of a Taco bell in college), you try working with 20 different fucking morons for garbage pay in your 30's and older. That job is not a job for people to stay happy. Cut them some slack, if you were manager you'd have to deal with tons of bullshit from god damn useless people who could also only get jobs at Mcdonalds.
>>
>>729199140
This job and CNA should pay a lot more.

Seems very low for what they have to deal with.
>>
>>729199271
It's really because they promote people for being good at their job in those places. Being good at a job isn't what it takes to be a good manager, not even at taco bell. Being good at people is what it takes to be a good manager. Of course, those types of managers aren't going to work for 30k/yr.

It's not like he can't always go back to make money some other way, anyways. He'll probably write a book that makes a couple more grand a year and other crap. It's not hard to make money when you don't really need it.

I was in EA and I did work on several AAA titles. Only higher and management broke 100k and most low level artist, especially like 3d environment, made a third of that.
>>
>>729209576
:( damn, thats pretty much being taken advantage of. Amazon, 343, maybe bungie, and valve pay a lot. I'm one of those. Where do you live? If you are not in the US it makes 100% sense. Especially canada.
>>
>>729209819
I've been several counties but all outside the US. Don't want to share my place now because it would be easy to figure out who I am then.

Honestly though, 100k as a young artist?

I am quite set where I live now, make 60k which is several times higher than the average plus living cost is dirt cheap so I save about $2k a month. But I am considering where to go after I build a family so this would be interesting to know.

I usually keep track of salaries through recruiters and rarely I see any 100k ones. Any sources for that type of salary?

I am somewhat known as an artist, idk, I'm not too hard to find on artstation and shit, i started at said studio as a contractor at 21, proved myself and got hired fulltime. Like I said, amazon pays hella, microsoft/343 as well, i know valve can pay way more than both. I know for level design microsoft pays a ton, more than probably any studio I've heard of. for environment is all I know tho, but microsoft and amazon are similar in that any fulltime job there is high paying. Bungie I'm not sure so you can workout I'm not there, I've heard it sucks too, bad culture :/

>>
>>729210685
I workd with some guys from Rockstar and Bungie but still, no salaries close to that. most seniors have been around 60k. Only lower level young guy I know was a concept artist freelancing for 130k, but that also excluded extra tax because of the freelancing contract.

I've been feeling spoiled since I came here. Maybe I should step it up and try for US in some years.

damn, 130k is sick. I want to go freelance in the next year or so. That's the dream. And yeah, you have the years so it shouldn't be as hard as it is for most people. Seattle is def a great place, that's weird about bungie, but I'd expect rockstar doesnt pay gr8. Also I'm a senior but I barely have five years experience, so i think that affect my salary. Basically I get shitloads of responsibility but have no clue what I'm supposed to do. (UX and art)

I have this problem too. I think it's largely due to wages being pretty low compared to cost of living where I am (socialist Canada). Most of my peers generally live paycheque to paycheque and are barely able to properly do their taxes, let alone invest their money.
