There is no alternative. If airlines don't over book air travel cannot be profitable. This is a practice encourage by the federal government so they don't have to subsidize with tax dollars.

The issue here is not with the airline and I don't understand peoples need to demonize them.

The problem here is this fucking moron ignored a lawful command from police and then Chet Coolbro went and grabbed him instead of mirandizing the passenger and then cuffing him in his seat.

The airline had to put 4 maintenance people on the flight.

They offered $800 to anyone that voluntarily surrendered their seat.

When nobody accepted, they randomly selected 4 people to be removed from teh flight.

3 left without incident. The 4th (the Chinese man pictured) refused to surrender his seat, citing that he was a doctor and had to work the next day. Deeming this reasoning insufficient, he was again asked to surrender his seat. He refused.

Airport security was called. When they arrived to forcibly remove him from the plane, there was a struggle. He was then bodily dragged from the plane, which was then vacated in entirety to clean the blood before reboarding.

He was an obstinate asshat that felt being a doctor made him too important to bother obeying the rules of the airline.

This is categorically false. 4 people needed to leave the plane. No one volunteered for compensation so they informed them that names would be randomly generated from eligible passengers. 3 were picked and left without a fuss, the 4th refused.

United was doing everything they could to incentivize. No one wanted to leave.

If it turned out the plane was unfit to fly, even after boarding, they would kick everyone off the plane and reschedule the flight.

This is no different. The 4 maintenance people were deemed critical personnel that the flight could not continue without, and removal of passengers is within the terms of the Contract of Carriage that every customer agrees to when they purchase their ticket.

it's a pittance to a billion-dollar corporation that had another 500 bucks of wiggle room to offer before escalating things (by law, by a stupid law that artificially caps the market price of a person being asked to get off the plane, but still by law)

Blacks are abused by cops EVERY single day in the U.S.
Every day. People chimp out and loot for the same fucking reason these fags want to DDOS. To make noise for NO REASON. They don't even support the cause. The real people who support the cause do it in non-obstructive ways. Of course people bat an eye, but that shit doesn't make national news with the exception of the Trayvon kid and the New York guy. It made the news for them, but not the thousands of others.

>The guy is a doctor
Ok, cool. Why didn't he calmly elaborate, instead of throwing a fit. If they pulled him off the plane AFTER he stated that, i'm 99% sure he could have argued that he needs to be somewhere and it's extremely urgent. They probably would have taken care of it, but instead, he threw a fit, got bloodied, and now people are protesting the company, when it was basically the guys fault. He should have remained calm.

Yes the airline offered compensation and asked for volunteers but he couldn't volunteer, he can't miss a day of work at the hospital and put people's lives in danger. Yeah, the rest of the plane could've volunteered but he couldn't.

He wasn't "betting" that he wouldn't be a name from the hat, he was acknowledging the fact he couldn't miss the flight, he wasn't a cunt about it, he explained the situation and the airline was a cunt about it. Being a doctor is being an auto mechanic for people. Not every doctor is a noble self-sacrificing hero that dedicates every hour of their waking lives to saving others.

Doctors get sick time. Doctors get vacation time. Doctors get paid leave. If he had called up his Hospital and said "I was selected to be reboarded on a different flight for tomorrow," you know what the Admins at the hospital would say? "Well that sucks."

Not "You're fired" or "We need you here right now." Doctors that are taking emergency travel are given special boarding passes that EXCLUDE them from those random draws.

He didn't have one, ergo he was not undergoing emergency travel. He was also with his wife, so he was probably just on vacation. He just didn't want to be inconvenienced and decided that because he was a doctor he could use that as an excuse to say "fuck you."
>>
>>728765939

> Blacks are abused by cops EVERY single day in the U.S.

Speaking about low quality bait

> Why didn't he calmly elaborate, instead of throwing a fit.

He did elaborate, the airline were idiots who refused to listen, then used force to remove him when he refused.

When he was originally selected he explained to them he couldn't leave and they'd have to fund someone else. Instead of the airline employees having a modicum of fucking logic and common sense they called in the Calvary and got him assaulted.

The fault comes down to the airline employees arrogance in thinking their profession is above everyone else. They overbook, go "Oh, well we need 4 people on this flight so they can work on another flight later, so four people have to be moved" randomly select a doctor who explains "No sorry, I can't miss this, I save lives everyday so I can't take a day off"

And the airline employees thinking "NAH OUR AIR HOSTESS IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THIS GUY, FUCK HIM CALL THE COPS"

It's only because the fucking pilots and stewardess's are arrogant and idiotic that this happened

We've been in a post terrorist watch state for at least a decade now. If anyone comes off as a threat in anyway no matter what age, race, or nationality. The airline will take it as a threat.
He did pay the airline, but buying a ticket also means you agree to their terms. And anytime some like this happens while on the the run way while the plane is in operation. They'll always over react.

Do you guys even use airplanes, seems like you all forgot how this works /b/ never change.

Except people are infinitely more valuable than cars, but yeah, kind've accurate analogy.

> Doctors get sick time. Doctors get vacation time. Doctors get paid leave.

Yeah, but not on that kind've notice they don't. You apply for that time, you don't give them like 12 hours notice

> If he had called up his Hospital and said "I was selected to be reboarded on a different flight for tomorrow," you know what the Admins at the hospital would say? "Well that sucks."

What if he was on call that night? Yah, the admins might've understood and been able to adjust, but also he was right in basically saying "Surely there is someone travelling for a less important reason that can go"

Yeah, the hospital might've been able to scramble and find a replacement, or force the (already likely) stretched staff to cover for him but it would've been way easier and more practical for the airline to go "Oh yeah, fair enough, doctors jobs are important, who here is selling shoes for a living?"

The airline should've understood the situation and adjusted.

> Doctors that are taking emergency travel are given special boarding passes that EXCLUDE them from those random draws.

Right, but that's in what a hospital considers an emergency, which is real fucking bad but simply a day at work in a hospital is still very important even if it's not a special emergency

boarding: 30 minutes (irrelevant because they selected that flight when boarding was already complete, but we'll include it anyways)
taxiing: 15 minutes
flying: 40 minutes
landing: literally like 5 minutes
disembarking: 10 minutes.

Sure is nice to shave of 3.3 hours of travel.

You are going to have to leave" and you tell them wtf, you paid for your ticket, you are going to watch the superbowl. You are already sitting in the seat. If they sold the seat to someone else, that's their problem. Plus you were there first. They offer you some coupons for money off future football tickets, and you tell them no thanks. Then they tell you to leave, or they will drag you out by force.

>And your superbowl ticket had a little note on the bottom that says "We can tell you to fuck off at-will."
Maybe. But does it seem right or fair?
Ultimately the airline owns the plane, and can control who is on or off it. At least they should in a free market. But is it good PR to kick paying passengers off who don't want to leave? Did the airline get greedy by overbooking flights too much? By not having maintenance people at the other location? Maybe they should have raised the incentives or found some other solution before having police drag a doctor off and create a PR nightmare? The airline may have a moral right to decide who is on their property, but was this a wise move? Does it give an impression that they value their customers?
>>
