Okay /b/ Let's say someone's having a police raid-search

Okay /b/

Let's say someone's having a police raid-search at this house tommorow, what's the best way to completely remove files from his computer, as well as completely remove what I deleted from the recycle bin?

Also what would be the best thing to do to "lock" an HDD? Would it be encryption? And what are the cons of it?
>>
Completely remove? Open the drive and smash the disk into powder.

Encrypt using 256bit or higher bullshit

Thermite

Boot from a Linux flash drive, and dd /dev/zero /mnt/[HDD NAME]. Afterwards a nail through the disk is a good measure.

As for encryption, can't say much other than it will make booting / large file reading a lot slower.

> someone's having a police raid-search at this house tommorow,

They schedule these things now? What is there a secretary that calls you up and tells you to expect a raid between the hours of 12pm and 6pm?
>>
>>728423603
to make your files irretrievable you have to completely destroy the drive. in a raid you don't have time for a software-based approach. complete destruction is your only option.

>>728423706

this will work.

I'd just remove it and stash it at your parents / friends house. Then just pop a new drive in with a fresh install. Otherwise just google for data destruction software.

This, if you want to have it still intact you'll have to check out:
A) Is your hard drive an SSD? If yes simply deleting completely destroys your data, ssd's work like that.
B) In case it's an older model you'll need to overwrite everything, the fastest way i could think of would be to take eraze the filesystem with a simple fast format and then copying some large files on there to fill up most of the space (large files get transferred faster than small files of the sum of the same size). Then smaller files. Then the smallest ones.
If you're a lazy fag you might wanna check for removal tools like abylonsoft shredder, plus random recovery tools in order to verify that you can't find shit anymore. Remember to delete your system as it's pretty likely you've left traces of WHATEVER you're trying to get rid of.

Well how do you think the feds find you? They COULD theoretically watch and/or save the entire internet history of everyone, but on the other hand they lack the capacity to do so, so you only get caught if you end up in one of their traps.
Let's say one of their traps was the new linkin park album you've downloaded, so a fully armed squad enters your home in order to detain you. In order to prevent that you've also downloaded the newest katie perry album you could consider to wreck your drives.

no its not, if they told you and you believed them you're fucking retarded. You can be found in contempt of court for not unlocking the device, but relevant cases are still making their way through the system. So far there hasn't been a case where the cops were simply executing a warrant prior to an arrest and didn't already see the files in question. Everything thats been going through the system involves dumbasses showing the cops their stuff and then refusing to unlock it at trial.

you should keep important files on a 256/512gb SSD. even better if it's a nice external SSD. one they don't store old data like platters do. two they format faster and completely erase all data when they do. three they come with built in encryption. four no need to wipe free space because there is no free space, it's used and discarded as needed.

basically, only misinformed people still store shit on HDDs.

this is why i keep about a hundred really old hard drives just sitting around. most of them don't have working interfaces any more (RLL anyone? heh) and they've all been wiped with huge, fuck-off magnets. if the cops want to go through my stuff, they'll have to go through all of the drives. it should take them months just to find the parts that will allow them to be read, or it'll cost them a huge amount of money for a recovery agency.

Magnets don't randomly polarize the data:
Think of bits as not 0 and 1 but as 0 to 10 and everything above 5 gets interpreted as a 1.
If you apply a magnet the original 9 gets a 4 thus not directly readable but with the given resources you can still do it.

The simplest way is to plan ahead.

Essentially have something akin to an industrial blender/grinder that loops the materials back into the grinding gears over and over again.

This works for large HDD destructive as well as single. In fact, destroying several HDD's together in this fashion would make it even more difficult to recover jack shit from the shattered disks.

Only thing you can really do better would to be having it loop through a section where microwaves are being emitted.

of course this is if you're particularly driven and expecting the possibility of literally being raided.

Bullshit

Here's how you prove who was behind the keyboard:
>I've done some illegal shit on my computer
>my name is 'anon', and my username is 'userx'

Investigators will consider:
>Has 'userx' logged into 'anon's facebook account?
>Did the same 'userx' log into 'userx' account on his operating system, with his password?
>Was it done around the same time as the illegal activity?
>Was it done in the same established pattern of use as the illegal activity? (i.e., if 'userx' has consistently been inactive between 8am and 5pm, and consistently active between 6pm and 10pm, was the illegal activity done in these timeframes? or during inactive timeframes?)
>Did 'userx' edit 'anon's resume file?
>Did 'userx' access 'anon's email with his password?
>Did 'userx' pay anon's bills online?
>Did 'userx' log into 'anon's bank account?
>Did 'userx' research topics that are of an interest to 'anon'?
>Did 'userx' log into 'anon's university account, or submit assignments with 'userx's email account to 'anon's lecturers?
>Did 'userx' copy content onto any removeable devices that 'anon' used at work, or school?
>Did 'anon' plug his phone the computer whilst 'userx' was logged in?
>Did 'anon' have files that are relevant, useful, and personal to him on 'userx's account?
>Did 'userx' log into a wireless router which is owned by, registered to, and has the password set by 'anon'?

You get the point. It all establishes accountability and ownership. And anyway, I can cite a few cases where this concept was entirely ignored by prosecutors, and the defendant (who was innocent) was found guilty and put in jail for 7 years as a pedophile. He killed himself not long after.

Could write a book about forensic processes, here's the basic rundown.

>We recieve (or sieze a device)
>Photograph everything with its evidence-code in the photo
>This includes all hard drives, serial numbers etc.
>Commence run sheet and evidence log
>Use a Tableu forensic imager to pull content from hard-drives with a write blocker to put it onto the machine we examine it with
>Our tool of choice is X-Ways forensics
>Perform relevant keyword, file, timeline, log and hex searches
>Search slack/free space
>Parse through recovered files for relevance

Every job is different. One job might be looking at emails, which is easy. Another job might be looking for evidence of IP theft, which requires obviously more intensive searching.

I recently did a job where a guy used a mac to change the timestamps on a file (using bash in terminal), copy the files to removeable media, then delete his bash history. Managed to catch him out because the last line in his bash history was essentially "open bash history", and when you reverse the process of deleting your bash history and ensuring it's deleted, that's the only thing that will be on there.

This was, of course; coupled with event logs, free-space data, mobile communication, cloud synched storage evidence and other artefacts.

"Tell me steps you took to recover files" is way too broad, and while there's a process in place, generally every job will have different steps you'll take depending on the system, devices, circumstances, requirements, budget, etc.

It's not my job to assess behaviour of someone while they're getting raided. It's also entirely different every time. I've been to raids where a kid was suspected of being involved in drugs (he was cleared) and his entire family was wailing and screaming, he was terrified and pissed himself. Another one, where three men were involved in a fraudulent investment scheme worth hundreds of millions, were so calm and un-bothered they appeared no more guilty than the little old lady next door.

But you don't get raided for nothing. If you're getting raided, it's because you've done something wrong, or been involved in doing something wrong. You will not get raided purely for nothing.

"Red flags" come from the police, where they're tipped off, or where their investigations have revealed reasonable cause to get a warrant. Similarly, their tips come from people who are reasonably concerned that their IP has been stolen, or someone else has been doing something illegal; and police have the same opinion. You don't get raided for nothing.

>Is there a minimum amount of required illegal activity that would make it worth your time to go to such effort?
I don't understand this. If I'm examining your computer it's because someone reckons you've done illegal things, and it's my job to find it. If you've downloaded child porn, I'm probably not going to be looking for your torrented movies, unless they're related to child porn. Similarly; if you've downloaded bomb-making material, I'm not really too fussed about the pirated software or ripped games you're using - and chances are; the cops aren't going to be too fussed either. With that being said, it's at my discretion whether I want to report it; but then I have to also weigh up whether it is outside of scope and it will get me ripped up in cross-witness examination, whether it will overrun budget, and whether it's relevant in general. It's all about context.

I'm still in honeymoon phase, I love it. Give it another 5 years and it might start to get boring, but looking through that stuff is what makes it exciting.

Whether it's CP, murder, rape, or a massive whistleblowing, IP theft, fraud or scam job; it's cool being the guy who finds the damning evidence.

Heaps of stuff I see in the news and I can point to going "I was a part of that", which is cool. Recently investigated and forensically examined a nuclear submarine builder's systems, as they were hacked. I had to trace back the 'entry points' (how they got into the system), the 'lateral movement' (how they moved around, and elevated privileges to get access to sensitive stuff), the reconnaissance they performed; and finally where it all came from. Was a Chinese perpetrator acting from a Chinese university; which is a known TTP from nation-state threat actors.

Delete every file (also from recycle bin).
Fill a file with random numbers until drive is completely full.
This will overwrite all data.
Everything else is overkill and bullshit. If I was examining your computer for something like IP theft, and I saw evidence of child porn; I would raise it with the police. I would also note it in the forensic report and discuss it in court.

However, I would also note that the files were within your temporary internet cache; and were not saved to your computer. I would note that (if it were true), the files could have landed on your machine just through simply happening to land on a page that had a preview thumbnail of CP on it. I would note that in my experience, for example; some people have traces of porn on their work machines, simply because of the advertisements on work-related sites - and would note that it is not necessarily indicative of that individual searching for, or downloading; pornorgraphic material.

You needa understand that just because the police hire me to do a job; doesn't mean I work for them: I work for the facts. If they hire to to examine a pedophile's computer for child porn, and I only see temporary internet traces of it; I'll report it as such - I won't go and try to make it out as if you've downloaded and transmitted child porn; I'll make it out to be exactly what it is.

But that's just me. Very often, defence experts will blatantly present evidence in a manner that is conducive to the defence teams efforts. Similarly, examiners working for the prosecution (ESPECIALLY police examines, they are the worst for it) will present the evidence in a manner that is most conducive to getting someone locked up. So if you've seen CP online (like on /b/), it's best to report it using the report feature, and maybe even report it to a child abuse network. That way; if an examiner is looking through your internet history, they AND your defence team can see that you made best efforts to bring the illegal content to light, that you didn't download it or seek it out, and clearly you're not actively looking at child porn for pleasure - as you reported it in good faith.

how do I properly wipe my hard drive without rendering it unusable?
>>
>>728430680
To clarify: Just because my employer charges $250 an hour, doesn't mean they pay me that ahaha. Considering starting my own business in the field though, simply so that I can get my own rate and keep it. But startup costs are easily $50K at a minimum.

Other fields include cyber security architecture and cyber security engineering, cyber security management, incident response at a management level, and security operations centre management.

I got a job in forensics by getting a role with a cyber security division within a consulting firm; but they seconded me to a different office for a while which did forensic work, due to my forensics degree - and the intention that I'd take that knowledge and start my own forensic lab back at the home office.

To get hired, I started a business during my degree. I was doing privacy / security consulting, where essentially I'd make people invisible online. Then it moved into a seperate business when I got my first business partner, who invested. We started doing investigative work, and conudcted background checks across four continents. The investigative work, mixed with the cyber security and forensics degree, is what got me hired.

I started those businesses with the knowing that just a degree isn't enough, and I needed to both get experience and demonstrate capability / drive. Also, in the meantime, I did very delicate vulnerability reporting. I found security vulns and reported them - did police websites, government/military websites, casinos, massive mining companies, even facebook / paypal / google / mozilla. Did it not for bug bounties, but to put down as experience on my CV. I only recommend vuln reporting to people who have genuinely extensive infosec experience, and understand how delicate vuln reporting is. You should only do it if your country has a CERT which takes public reports (most org's choose prosecution over prevention, I've been interviewed by two detectives before & cautioned over this).

Firstly, fresh re-install windows. Then, use CCleaner to wipe free space. Then, guttman wipe free space. Then, use DBAN to completely zero-wipe the drive. Then, re-install windows on it, and repeat the process. But honestly even then it's not a guarantee.

One research professor I know had a lab where he was able to recover shadow volumes from TWO years before the examination, after multiple factory resets, free space wipes and DBAN's. The best policy is still physical destruction.

To add another layer of complexity, you should use veracrypt or truecrypt on everything sensitive before the wiping. That's generally a pretty safe bet.

Destroy the physical hard drive. If you have incriminating data, then it's better to go that route, assuming that the crime warrants serious jail time. Tampering with evidence is a crime, but it is a much less serious one when compared to some of the charges that can be brought upon a person with regards to the files they have on their hard drives. Good luck anon. Either way, jail time seems inevitable.

i got raided because a certain asshole's GF ahd dumped him and she moved in with me. he came over all jealous vengeful and told the cops i had CP. they put me through the fucking wringer before they realised the situation and dropped the case. didn't get an apology from them and they didn't prosecute jealous ex boyfriend.

so much for fucking justice.

Gestures are speech otherwise the cops wouldn't have show up at my door for inciteful speech when I flipped some old bitch off over my shoulder as I walked away.

Not that that's a legal definition yet, like I explained to the cops they don't get to interpret the law, a jury gets to interpret if my actions were insightful.

In any case between flipping the bird and sign language I'm pretty sure gestures as speech is a no brainer.

Fingerprints on the other hand, well they already have those and anybody who seriously uses that is a fucking moron.

Honestly the last version of truecrypt is the way to go. It had a way of writing a hidden partition on a drive in such a fashion that would give you deniability as to whether the partition existed or was just random data, so they can't even force you to give over the passphrase in court.

all drives are shielded against (electro)magnetic radiation. your microwave ofen would burn up before the data on the disks would recieve any damage.

i dont know jack about firearms, but we tried and the disks were all intact after the drive taking severall 9mm shots.
exept a couple shattered disks, from the shock.

Your SSD advice is pretty much the opposite of true.

Deleting files only removes their index entry. On an SSD, the really bad part is that your files are moved around as to where they are physically stored all the time. It's difficult to really delete/overwrite anything on an SSD without either low level format or manufacturers utility.

want proof? try with recuva. delete files, recover them. tell recuva to secure overwrite them. still can recover them. etc.

>If somebody were to kick my door in, I flick the switch on the side of my case and the magnets will fucking annihilate the drive
>It's a WD black 1tb magnetic drive. By time they figure out what's going they'll be lucky if the head is even attached anymore let alone ANY chance of recovering the content

all this reminds me of a conservative forum i used to read. it got on the topic of data protection and destruction one day. they all tried to out-do each other with how they destroyed their hard drives when they were done to prevent information theft. they all claimed to go out and shoot the hard drives, then chop them up, grind them down, etc. all ridiculous bullshit.

I wonder if this guy knows it doesn't matter if the heads are attached, or if he ran a 60 cycle homemade electromagnet over it. It sounds like something he'd think he'd see in a movie, but it has no bearing on reality, such as coupling the platters with new logic boards and heads, etc.

Store all your data on small external drives, that can easily be destroyed. For example external SSDs or even SD-Cards, but not conventional hard disks. This includes the operating system or otherwise there will be plenty of metadata left. But booting from a read-only drive would be even better. Otherwise you'll have to explain why you don't have a working system at hand.

A FOOLPROOF GUIDE TO ERASING YOUR HARD-DRIVES
----------------------------------------

Computer hard drives today are magnetized with a unique chemical formula that allows data to resist the effects of high impacts, partial burnings, and outdated attempts at erasure.

The most effective way to completely erase a hard-drive is to remove the chemical coating present on the disk reel. The steps to create this demagnetizing compound are listed below.

----------------------------------------

STEP 1.) Prepare your hard drive. It will need to be removed from your computer to allow it to be placed into the compound.

STEP 2.) In a small container, spray hair spray until the container is coated with a shiny layer. Now mix 4 cups bleach with 1/2 cup water.

STEP 3.) Wait 15 minutes for the bleach to break down and absorb the hair spray. !!!THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!!!

STEP 4.) After 15 minutes have passed, stir the mixture lightly. Add one capful of rubbing alcohol and 4 cups ammonia. The mixture will partially congeal.

STEP 5.) With rubber or vinyl gloves, gently submerge your HDD. Wait 5 minutes, extract HDD from solution and rinse thoroughly with cold water

----------------------------------------

And that's it! With just these simple steps, you can make a demagnetizing solution that will render your data 100% irretrievable. Hope this helps!

Depends on location. Here the police will arrive while you're out or at sleep. Either way, you probably won't be able to destroy anything.

I'd love to go through those cases you mentioned. Because you're either bullshitting or you misinterpreted something obvious.

>I've done some illegal shit on my computer
>my name is 'anon', and my username is 'userx'
Yeah, they can't do that because there's no physical evidence tied to that.

That is ALL circumstantial. Again, if investigators do not have physical evidence linking any alleged internet activity, it's not a case.
Because circumstantial evidence alone is not enough for a conviction.

> It all establishes accountability and ownership
You need physical evidence for that. Third time.

Also you're not 'put in jail for 7 years'
It's called sentenced to prison.
Citations, now.
