I visited a friend in America and she didn't have a kettle?

I visited a friend in America and she didn't have a kettle? I said "How do you boil water?" and she proceeded to fill a cup and put it in the microwave.

What the fuck?
>>
>>728358824
It's how normal people make a single cup of water for a hot beverage

Everyone in america is too retarded to boil water lol
>>

The entire rest of planet Earth uses a kettle you Amerifuck.

>>
>>728358824
How much water was she boiling? For what? How often does she need to boil it?

Im a tea addict, only reason I own one. My folks only heat a cup of hot choco twice a year. Otherwise you throw that shit on the stove...
>>
>>728358966
What if you want to make multiple hot beverages because you have many visitors? Do Americans seriously just use the microwave?
>>
>>728358966
Bubble alot?
>>
>>728359212
Theyd use their $200 mr coffee machine in that case. I bet you use tea bags anyway asshole.
>>
This is kinda dangerous, since the water can pass it's boiling temperature without actually boiling. Then you give It a shake and it boils instantly, wich could burn you.

When I heat water to drink tea, I use the mw, but I avoid getting It near 100°C

I happen to own a kettle but if I make a single cup of tea, instant coffee etc. Why would I wait for the entire kettle to boil???
>>
Well ameritards lay on the bed with their shoes, so it's not surprising.
>>
>>728359468
kettle takes less than a minute if you had 240v plugs like civilized society, instead of your flimsy 2-prong shitty plugs.
>>
>>728359212

In America we don't have friends who drink "multiple hot beverages" like eurofags. We offer coffee using our coffee makers or beer/drinks which are cold. Tea is for pussies.
>>
>>728359495
Yes I've noticed this. What a curious people.
>>
A kettle is the most efficient way of boiling water, so save yourself some money on bills and buy a cheap kettle.
>>
>>728359495
I don't even understand people who walk around the house in shoes.

1. It gets your whole house dirty
2. No matter how comfortable the shoes are, I can't wait to take them off
>>

these are so fucking stupid and wasteful
>>

no such thing as an efficient electric kettle in america (120v). They work, but have very short lives relative to how quickly they heat up the water. Thus there isn't much of a push in the market

>>

>>
Apparently the Voltage in the US is too low to boil water in a kettle in 1-2min (like in Europe), thus making it pointless
>>
>>728358824
americans don't normally drink tea. my house has a kettle and we usually pour the boiling water from the kettle into a huge pitcher for tea. that's what most people do. or they buy machines to make it for them

or if you're super fucking desperate, fill a pot up with water and pour it over tea bags

Its faster than trying to boil 3cup water in the microwave still. But thats an interesting fact to learn.
>>
>>728359383
Saw this shit on mythbusters today while netflix, and they said tap water should be gucci with all the impurities so it starts to boil, while distilled can go over boiling point and can explode
>>

microwave FTW especially if you superboil the water and it spontaneously boils when the user grabs the mug/Pyrex whatever. Yes, water can heat over 100 C and not boil until it's disturbed, then it explodes on your hand. :)

you actually have to move the pixels, not just change the rotation info. not sure if there's an app for that, but obviously paint and photoshop will do that (on a computer)
moving pixels is serious business

This thread makes me sick, after having some time to read it. This is primarily down to two reasons, both of them are due to Americans.

1. Americans don't use kettles to boil water, instead opting to use a microwave.

this is just something that I cannot even begin to understand. American thinking is severely corrupted, as if we actually needed more proof of this. Still, it's quite astounding to realise how actually fucked they all are.

2. after people openly mocking them about it online, they begin to think that becoming pretentious about hot drinks is a good way to avoid seeming weird.
>"this is how Europeans think, right?"
>"I totally have this press, and I only buy good beans"
>"I set my automatic coffee chute to 200c. in the morning!"

AMERICA WINS

Most areas don't need to boil our water to kill bacteria and viruses in your european cesspools. We have quality water that does not need to be boiled every time we drink it.

That's where parts of europe come in. You fuckers have dirty disguising water, hence you drink tea and boil the water even during the summer. Yes, I've been to many european countries and it's the same. 38 C outside and, by the way, would you like a glass of hot fucking boiling tea. Even if it has been cleaned up, your history follows you. Boil everything or die. I can drink tap water and be healthy, not you, eurofag.

That's why we rarely boil water in the USA, good water. Try it, Europe fags.

Also we tossed your fucking tea into the ocean up in Boston a few centuries ago so eat it fags.

My sister is married to a Norwegian, so I know enough to bow to their coffee obsession, they're the only people I'd consider more coffee nerdy than me. The reason I use unbleached paper filters is because I drink so much coffee that pan boiled coffee would likely end up killing me. I couldn't deal with all of the cholesterol and other junk left in there, even if it is the only thing that tastes better than my preferred method.

That's weird. The only real difference is there's no fibrous filter, just steel mesh. Maybe it is because he uses cooler water. I've noticed that even in a press, near boiling water makes it more bitter, cooler water makes it less so. I like a bit of bite, so I "kill the coffee" with too hot water.
>>
>>728365663
You're like me. I bring the water to a rapid boil, and then immediately pour it over the grinds.
The benefit of using very hot water is that you get crema, which is the best part of coffee.

I tend to put water that is 199.4 degrees Fahrenheit on my coffee, that I use an unbleached paper filter for at medium drip on my funnel. It takes about 3 minutes and 45 seconds to run through.
My coffee gets plenty bitter like that and if it is my favorite strain, it also has a side taste of sour berries.

It has a few names, in America it's known as "cowboy coffee", In sweden it's Kokoffe, but basicially what you do is you mix a raw egg, including the shell, with coffee grinds and a bit of cold water, bring a pan of water to a boil, and pour the coffee in and boil for about 3 minutes. Then you ladle the coffee out.
Here it's called sunday coffee, because it's usually made for church service.

No, the shell helps keep the grinds settled in the bottom of the pan. It makes for very smooth coffee, as teh alkaline egg shells cut the coffee acidity.
>>
>>728367461
Huh, well if I ever get the chance, I'll try it.
I'm always up for trying new things, even if the method is old enough to be called cowboy coffee.
>>

It's called that because of the norwegian ranchers, which americans conveniently forget about their on history.

Tap water can blow from superheating as well. I have experienced this many times ... thankfully while it was still in the oven and not all over me.

The way to avoid it is to use something that provides 'nucleation sites' to start the water boiling. There are boiling stones for this ... anything with a rough surface will do. The smooth interior surface of the boiling vessel is what allows it to happen.

>>728376209
It is the same reason that water freezes at 0 degrees celsius.
If it is distilled, it needs to go to -10 degrees celsius to freeze.
>>
>>728376209

Mineral *deposits* will give you nucleation sites.

The problem with microwaving is there is no convection to stir the water around like there is on a stovetop. All the water heats up at once and sits still ... when something disturbs it (or even spontaneously) it goes off like a bomb.

I don't need citations - I used to have this happen on a regular basis in my own microwave using very mineral laden tap water. Usually it would blow off in the microwave - but once or twice it blew off as I opened the door. Pretty scary stuff.

P.S. - I also am engineering nerd.

American power is too weak to heat water in a kettle, I believe they run on 120V instead of the 240V over on England, so it takes 15 minutes for the kettle to heat up properly. Quite why they don't have a classic kettle that goes on the stove i have no idea, but that's Yanks for you.

Question: Did this kettle plug straight in or did it require a conversion adapter? If the former, that makes YOUR kettles shit. If the latter, it could have been cheap or something to do with the voltage shifter.

I don't doubt it, I'd love to spend some time there.
I also want to visit Scotland, catch a salmon and eat it Gollum style because I love sushi and because salmon there don't tend to have parasites.

That's not how electricity works fuck face. You have a higher voltage but your products draw less amperage. Idiiott

I've been using my kettle for almost a decade now and it's still going strong. It draws 1500W on 120V. (That's 12.5A so as to stay under the rated breaker limit of 15A.)

The brand used to be called Toastess.
An American 1500W and a European 3000W kettle will both draw the same amount of current. There's no reason why 120V variants should inherently be less reliable.

240V kettles are usually rated at 2200-3000W. So, 120V electric kettles take approximately twice the amount of time to boil water. It's fast enough.

Kettles designed for 120V have a thermal coil with approximately half the resistance of those designed for 240V.

What do you think a step-down is? If i plug a 120V kettle into a 240V socket, it'll fuck the kettle. You have to use a step-down transformer to convert it to 120V so the damn thing doesn't die.

This is true. Electric kettles here can only go up to ~1800 watts, whereas in Europe they can double that.
