Tap water can blow from superheating as well. I have experienced this many times ... thankfully while it was still in the oven and not all over me.

The way to avoid it is to use something that provides 'nucleation sites' to start the water boiling. There are boiling stones for this ... anything with a rough surface will do. The smooth interior surface of the boiling vessel is what allows it to happen.

The problem with microwaving is there is no convection to stir the water around like there is on a stovetop. All the water heats up at once and sits still ... when something disturbs it (or even spontaneously) it goes off like a bomb.

I don't need citations - I used to have this happen on a regular basis in my own microwave using very mineral laden tap water. Usually it would blow off in the microwave - but once or twice it blew off as I opened the door. Pretty scary stuff.

P.S. - I also am engineering nerd.

American power is too weak to heat water in a kettle, I believe they run on 120V instead of the 240V over on England, so it takes 15 minutes for the kettle to heat up properly. Quite why they don't have a classic kettle that goes on the stove i have no idea, but that's Yanks for you.

I've been using my kettle for almost a decade now and it's still going strong. It draws 1500W on 120V. (That's 12.5A so as to stay under the rated breaker limit of 15A.)
