I was once at a gas station in a small town on the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S. I was trying to find directions to a local Lincoln monument. It was a large place that sold beer.

Except for an old white guy behind the counter, the place was deserted. I ask him for directions and, without warning, he goes on trying to explain for a solid five minutes. He ran his mouth like it was a lawn mower cutting grass from a field in the ghetto that hasn't seen maintenance in years.

He was an older fellow and I didn't want to be disrespectful by interrupting him. I let him drone on and stood there in stunned silence. I thought about buying some beer just to deal with his constant yapping.
There was another customer that came in during the middle of this rant by presumably the loneliest old man in Middle America. He got in line behind me. We exchanged looks and just stood there in silence, like a spell was cast over us by a beautiful Siren that turned into an old fart and lured us, like sailors of old, into a doom of being bored to death.
Finally, I couldn't take anymore and cut him off and left. I left the other guy to fend for himself. I don't think I ever did learn where the Lincoln monument was from that old guy, but it didn't matter, because I was finally "Free at Last, Free at Last, Lord Almighty I am Free at Last."
