I live in an area where there's a cartel going on between a few companies that keeps prices high (among the highest in the country) and the city officials are protecting it. Imagine if they didn't and a 3rd party was allowed to come in and set up shop, offering the same goods and services for way less. How do you corner a market? But competing. If you have 3 companies providing the same goods and services for the same price, and you come in and provide them for less, wow, look at that, people will go "hey, I can get the same stuff here for less." Sure, you make a little less than the 3 major ones, but guess what, you're still making money and eating away at them. If you came in and charged the same price, why would anyone buy from you? They wouldn't.

The 3 big companies will see their customers going to this 4th company and they can either start competing or try and shut them down via legal means.
