I make $15 an hour. Doesn't go nearly as far as you think. And if you raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour everything else will go up with it. That's how it works. Within a few years your $15/hr will feel like $7/hr.

I worked as a manager at a fast food joint at a big chain. Everything is down to equations in business. Labor is at or around 30%. This was a few years ago but on average we would need to have 4 extra cars come through the drive through to justify having 1 extra employee working that shift to meet our numbers. If our labor is low and we look at how many sales we made and we're busy as hell, fuck yeah call someone and beg them to come in. If not then you need to let someone off early (which as you expect nobody ever complains about).

If you effectively double the minimum wage you either need to either double your sales, start charging 13 dollars for a #10, or cut labor. If not then the place closes and nobody gets to work.

Double sales? Nope, not going to happen. This is pretty much what businesses have been striving to do ever since business was a thing. Charge more money? Yes. Cut labor? Yes, there's fucking robots now that can do most the work. The ONLY two options left for the business are things someone striving to make ends meet doesn't want to happen. At BEST they'll be right where they started when prices normalize. At worst they'll be without a job in a market that wants robot repairman skills that they don't have.

We don't buy into the generic gimmicks, which is paying $1 for a roll of paper towels that will last only 1/3 as long as the $2 roll. We don't eat out often, we don't waste money on frivolous crap, but we have everything we need, and most of what we want. It would be nice to have a $200k home and two brand new cars, but the reality is that debt destroys.

Listen to Dave Ramsey. Stop whining about what you deserve. You deserve shit. Earn your keep. Work hard, spend time with your loved ones, and remember to save money for emergencies. There are jobs out there, but it requires getting off of your ass to find one.

For example, let's say that market wages for your labor are $10, and let's say hamburgers are a typical commodity, and cost $5.
If the government artificially sets your pay at $15, hamburgers will now cost $7.50. In fact, they might cost slightly more, as sellers hedge their bets against an inflating dollar. Woops!

They can keep raising your wage, but if the wage increase isn't caused by market demand, it'll simply cause inflation.

There are countless historical examples of this. Wage and price fixing by the government is almost invariably a colossal fuck up.
