Camping, hiking, I sometimes hunt. I'm not one of those gung-ho, out in the woods as soon as the season opens type of hunters, but when I figure I'll have time to actually I'll grab my license for the season.

I am pretty big on camping, though. I grew up in upstate NY near Adirondak park so there is basically unlimited free state camp land around me. Every year me and my friends try to hit up at least a few different areas. Probably the best place I camped at also almost killed me. If anybody is interested, I'm not going to greentext but I'll give you the short version.

We kayaked in across approximately 7 miles of (mostly)open lake. Sun shining, birds chirping. When we left it was the same, weather forecast before we even started the trip predicted clear weather, no phone service up there so you can't check before you go.

We got probably a mile out and the weather did a 180. High winds, thunder and lightening, downpouring rain. Within minutes there were 3+ foot waves out on the lake with me and my friends out in just "leisure" kayaks. I hit a particularly rough set of waves and it flipped my kayak upside down instantly. I managed to get out quickly but couldn't fight my way to the surface or find my kayak or anything else to grab on to.

I panicked under water until I ran out of breath and passed out. Luckily, unknown to me, they dispatched rescue boats because a park ranger doing a routine patrol happened to see one of my friends struggling in the middle of the lake. They hadn't hit the same rough spot because they were close to an island, and thankfully were able to point out where they had last seen me.
