This isn't actually true. I'm currently making 75k USD a year from an "actual computer job" as you put it, with zero formal education in computers. I just used to build gaming rigs, then switched to designing custom "game enhancements", then got my current job. Initiative and capability matter more than degrees. If you come to an interview with a degree, it looks good, yeah, but not as good as when you come to that interview with a clear and undeniable demonstration that you can do the job, and do it well. Find out what you're applying for, figure out how to do it, then seek out the interview (don't just wait for them to be hiring, go out of your way to seek it out), and have your demonstration of ability ready.

Businesses appreciate initiative and capability far more than degrees, which can be empty.

Nope. Vendor certifications matter more than degrees. An A+ and an MCSA would be plenty for most entry to intermediate level IT jobs.
From there you build your knowledge while actually getting paid. My workplace paid for my diploma and it took only 6 weeks because it was done entirely by demonstrating my skills to an examiner. My degree is now only going to take a year part time because I have 10 years worth of demonstrable skills and internationally recognised vendor certifications

This is the problem with millennials in the work force, they put too much value on degrees, and not enough value on personal initiative. Let me describe two job seekers for you.

The first is your average millennial job seeker.
He has a Bachelors degree, and when we're hiring he'll email in an application, and maybe, MAYBE give me a call expressing interest in the job.

The second is a much rarer kind of guy.
He has somewhat relevant experience in the field, and maybe an associates degree, but rarely a bachelors, and usually no degree at all. Despite his lack of relevant training, he'll try to demonstrate how what he knows could be useful, and how he'd be willing to learn, and most importantly he'll actually reach out to me personally expressing interest in a job, whether we're actively hiring or not.
