You;re full of shit and obviously have no concept of "socialized medicine" (whatever the fuck that is supposed to be). I assume you mean universal healthcare, which is actually a brilliant idea (not always ideally implemented) and is in place in every civilized country in the world. Only the US is so fucking self-centered and greedy that we won't collectively pay to provide all our citizens with reasonable healthcare

He didn't say Canadians don't go to Canada for healthcare, he said those that can afford it - go to the USA for healthcare. This is true. This is overwhelmingly true.

You see, dumbass, in Canada you can be on a waitlist for over a year for a surgery. Even life saving surgeries can have insane wait times. You cannot buy your way to the front of the line. In the USA, you can have surgery anytime you want it. Besides, the best doctors in the USA in most people's opinions. How do I know this? Because follow the money. The wealthy can go anywhere... and they come here. Why? Why not Cuba? Why not China? Why not Kuwait?

Stop trying to hide your lies with more lies.

Of course there wasn't support for single payer in 2009. But that wasn't what you said. You claimed "Obama made his happen even with a republican house and senate". Since we don't have single-payer NOW, there's no way you could have been talking about that. So you were clearly talking about Obamacare, the claim that the Republicans controlled anything when it passed is a fucking lie.
>>
A universal healthcare plan like Bernie's would cost literal trillions.

This 'plan' put forth by the GOP was a rush attempt at best that didn't even have the support of those within their own party. It was an awful plan.

I still hope Obamacare is repealed, but replacing it with something like this last proposition would have been almost as bad, if not worse.

Socialized medicine is awsome.
Believe me. I live with it every day. It's cheap, it's good, and it has accidental benefits that are awesome.

For example, poor people who would otherwise be scared and desperate because they can't get treatment for their kid/spouse/dad get treatment for their kid/spouse/dad and are less desperate.

If you're working, get into an accident and puncture your lung you go to a hospital, get out, still have a job and aren't covered in debt from head to toe and don't have to do any legal shit. You can just get back to work.

This is how government works. Laws will have opposition to them. In order to get them passed there is a give and taken between opposing factions until both are satisfied. There will usually be a sweet spot in the middle where there is a balance between those factions and the law will pass, aka common ground, etc. Sometimes there isn't. Which nobody in the thread said, so congrats on attacking a non-existent strawman.

Though the reason single-payer failed wasn't because of conservatives in the Democratic party, It failed because universal healthcare in general was polling terribly (the majority opposed it, even in the general sense), and full scale socialized medicine (like single payer) did even worse. So the Dems hedged their bets, and designed Obamacare to be a disaster so when it failed they could ride in with single-payer to the rescue.

Which is about as stupid as the Republicans failing to repeal it entirely.
>>
>>726731275
Being this brainwashed is just sad.

America can apparently do anything. They put a man on the moon. They have the largest and most powerful military the world has ever seen. They have more billionaires and millionaires than anywhere else in the world and yet when it comes to supporting and helping those that have been fucked over by rampant deregulation and corporatism to the point where the entire governments (both left and right) are essentially plutocracy's and yet the poor working whites are still brainwashed to believe that universal healthcare is simply impossible and that supporting the poor will destroy the country can be incredibly exasperating to watch.

The working class right wing have been convinced that they are temporarily embarrassed millionaires that are being held back by (Obama, Mexicans, Muslims, etc) when the truth is that they have been tricked again and again in to blindly supporting policy that fucks them over and directly lines the pockets of the already wealthy.

60 people on earth control HALF of the resources of the entire planet. Until people despite their political affiliation realise they are ALL being fucked and that democratic socialism IS THE WAY TO GO then the rot will continue.

You can point and laugh at me and call me a "libtard" for my steadfast belief in SENSIBLE democratic socialism but you're on the same sinking ship as me. "Winning" won't mean much in the end.

Instead you'll have what you have now: the middle class buried in additional premium hikes and deductibles for coverage that's worse than when the ACA passed.

The GOP plan is just fine. The reason that it got shot down, and continues to face such resistance is because you fucking idiots don't realize how fucked you are with the "Affordable Care Act"

>ACA plans only work if you make less than 12000 annually, because that's the line for subsidy
>real working people have the option to pay anywhere from 300 to 700 dollars monthly for plans that do not cover anything until you pay 3000 to 7000 dollars out of pocket first (respectively)
>the tax penalty is 695 or 2% of gross income for not being insured
>so, 700 to 1000 dollar tax penalty, or 12000 yearly for insurance that doesn't cover anything.

The finance sector was blamed for the Great Recession, so who did they pick? Not just a finance guy, but one who was known for taking over companies and firing everyone. And the Republican base was charged up to fight Obamacare -- and they chose the guy who invented it.

What's really appalling is that Romney did so well. Against a candidate who was less of a cluster fuck, Obama would have been doomed.

Bernies tax plans were a bit more in-depth and well thought out than that, anon.

https://taxfoundation.org/details-and-analysis-senator-bernie-sanders-s-tax-plan/

All that top 1% of 1% talk from Bernie that he banged on about all the time is a really important issue. SIXTY odd people own half of the planets resources. Do you think such a small amount of people should control so much wealth and resources? Doesn't it all seem a bit.....I dunno, anti-human?

I didn't agree with Bernie on every thing but I am completely convinced that democratic socialism is the best way forward for modern society. It does NOT mean we throw away the capatalist mindset. That would be a disaster. But we do make certain things human rights. Healthcare being top of that list. America is RICH as FUCK! You don't have to turn the uber wealthy in to paupers but at some point you have to make a stand and say that we can't have the vast majority of the planets resources being directed to a group of people that probably have less people in it than this thread does.

That is just insane.

This video shows how fucked up it all is and this is from 2012 so you know it's even worse now.

That isn't my point. Increasing taxes on not just ordinary income, but things like capital gains is a bad idea. No real point to invest if every risk you have to take is taxed at the ordinary rate. You shouldn't have to pay a higher rate for working harder or having a good idea.

I'm all for eliminating loopholes, but the problem is defining "income". Because the rich make most of their money through investment and owning companies, not through something like a salary or even a dividend. That's how people like Rockefellers managed to avoid almost anything, when income tax was 94%. That mostly just hurts the working professionals, not the really rich. The alternatives are taxing savings/investments, or greatly increasing the capital gains tax, which is a great way to kill small businesses (and it's small businesses we need to protect, not the big ones).
>>
>>726740722

Look, I get your point anon. I do think that healthcare is a very important subject that should be resolved, but in the right way.

I think the free market is still the best way to govern. The problem with regulations is more that they don't evolve fast enough with the current pace that business overtakes them which causes one incident after the other.

If income is taxed at such an extraordinarily high rate along with other things such as the capital gains tax then incentive to make money will begin to dissipate.

No system is perfect, but free market capitalism is still the best one out there.

You know how to create a middle class in the US?

1. Create MORE tax brackets, the top bracket at $400k is fucking stupid. Make a bracket at $500k, $1MM, $3MM, $10MM and $100MM. Lots of fucks make a shit ton. Then increase the marginal tax brackets for the above to 42%, 45%, 55%, 65% etc. Top brackets in the fucking 50s were near 90% and we were fucking fine.

2. Make fucking corporations taxed differently from individuals! SO FUCKING NEEDED. Republitards love to talk about not increasing taxes because it "kills jobs". Well dont let corporations and individuals get protections from this shit. When a wall st trader makes $500MM a year, hes not a god damn job creator. Make him pay a different goddamn tax.

3. Keep the goddamn estate tax in place. When you inherit more than $5MM fucking dollars, you get a 50% tax on anything above it.

If you do these 3 you prevent the US from becoming an Oligarchy and fucking eveyone over. But it will never happen because Reps love to have the 99% be poor as fuck. You create the society where an Orange retard is our President

That's why we need to figure out a sensible and rational way to tax the UBER wealthy more without removing the desire to strive for wealth and success that leads in to innovation.

It's my opinion that things are so ludicrously top heavy that there are ways of achieving that goal of supporting free tuition and universal healthcare without gutting the positives that come out of an innovative and capitalist society but we simply can't ignore the massive problems that unchecked capitalism has wrought. There simply has to be a better way.

I'm of the opinion that the democratic socialist model is the best. I also think the name "democratic socialism" had a branding problem after decades of the narrative being that "socialism = bad" even though D.S isn't *really* socialism. It just means that some things are off the table when it comes to profit motives.

Bernie made so much sense to me. Is he idealistic? Sure. You need someone like Sanders to rock the boat and show us that the emperor has no clothes though. The plutocracy of American politics should not be a partisan issue. It's infected both the left and right. Get money out of politics. Figure out a fairer way to reverse top heavy capitalism and the extreme wealth retention of a small number of elite. These things ARE doable but the narrative is so locked in to make people vote against their best interests.

It generally creates waste, because the way businesses work they have to spend the money now, which means they can't build up reserves and go on questionable spending binges. This is not one of those areas where there's a really easy sound-bite solution.

Getting rid of loopholes would help, because the very nature of loopholes means they favor those with the resources (lawyers accountants money) to exploit those loopholes. In fact, throw out the whole thing and replace it with a clean new tax code. There are simply too many special provisions designed to favor this industry or the other, this business or the other, this group or the other.

And seriously rethink estates. I'm a big of fan of killing off all the trust fund kids -- let them get rich on their own or get a job, instead of getting millions from mommy and daddy. And things like the Tolkien estate. The problem is figuring out a way to do that without forcing the neighborhood car wash to fold the instant daddy dies. (Because with a high estate tax, the kids would have to sell it, which kills multigenerational small businesses.)

I think a better society is one where you don't go 100% free market...

Certain things in society can be much better if you socialize them.

Health care: When you treat it like capitalism you encourage profits. When you want profits, you find ways to limit health to people. So people will die.

Hospitals: They are for profit, and the natural capitalistic process is to consolidate and make larger hospitals so they are more "efficient". Unfortunately, this limits their access in rural areas, rural people have to travel farther, might die on the way....

Lighthouses: There is no fucking company that would every make a lighthouse, you cant make any money off them, but they are a public good that are necessary. This is a classic example.

Health Insurance: In line with Health care and hospitals, you have CEOs making multi-millions on charging people more for poor coverage for 1st world countries.

Education: When you make this a voucher system, a la Betsy DeVos, you get schools that compete with each other, poor and rural areas gets closed, the rich all go to one school in the general area, get preferential everything, poor kids dont get educated well, rich kids never get exposed to poor people then go on in life shitting on the poor, start wars, become republican etc.

Yep, that's what I've been saying forever. It's exactly that - just something where people who otherwise do not give the slightest of shits will now have a team to cheer for, and they cheer really hard for about 6 months and then they go away again. In this instance, you have people cheering for and against a bill they have not read, nor have they read the dozens and dozens of changes in the last week alone, nor is health insurance something they even care about on any level.

Do you understand "creative destruction"? You can't point one failed business and claim someone is a failure. Except in rare cases, success requires failure as well as success, it's the net result that matters. And Romney is definitely a major success. Trump is more middling, because while he's still rich, he didn't beat the S&P 500.

And on the tax thing, you still haven't explained why you think Trump pays no taxes, and saying Romney paid 12% is very different from what you said originally (0%).

And "supply side" is basically used like "fascist" is these days. It's an insult that can mean almost anything, so it's meaningless without specifics.

There is literally no excuse for a man worth millions to declare bankruptcy and fuck over his investors. That's what Trump did, and Romney's company went bust similarly.

And supply side is fascism, anon. It means something very specific, that it's OK to give the richest people a break on their taxes, when they should be paying more.

Not realizing the Conservatives have been trying to destroy the NHS for decades. The strikes are all in response to the Con's attempts to destroy it and their defunding of it.

The NHS is not perfect (nothing is) but it's an INCREDIBLE institution. I received amazing care when I was badly electrocuted when I was younger. Months of top quality care with a bill at the end of it for a big fat $0.

Socialized medicine IS awesome.

When I see blue collar workers from the Midwest, Deep South, and Appalachia arguing that their own healthcare should be cut so I can pay a little less tax I just laugh. Sure I would prefer if we funded science and education and got wasteful military spending under control, but the Republican agenda will kill off a lot of their own base and my bank account will get bigger in the process so I'm not going to put that much effort into fighting it.

I am the anon that started the argument, and you're correct. People generally want everyone to have healthcare, in the abstract. But that doesn't mean they want government to run it (or pay for it... the average extra taxes they were willing to pay even in that poll is $500), and it's certainly not support for a single-player system, which poll terribly. Whereas things like wider coverage for needy kids tends to poll very well. Pretending these are all the same is the basic problem with most of these debates.
