In anycase I think it's worth noting that in lifeforms from different ecosystems aren't likely to be anything we'd traditionally would expect aliens to be. This doesn't only apply on form, timescale and forms of intelligence, but also on social needs. Chances are any intelligent lifeforms we could possibly meet are hostile.

If I would have to make a wild guess on the most likely form of aliens we'd meet it'd be space ants. Not ants really, but similiar in behaviour and size. Not intelligent per se, but able to breed fast and survive in hostile conditions, very hostile and destructive. This kind of lifeforms could live like massive bacterias on asteroids and survive hitting a planet. They could possibly feed on the minerals through processes unknown to us.

Thanks to the oxygen rich atmosphere we've not had such lifeforms intrude our planet, as anything entering would burn fairly quickly. Whatever lifeforms may have arrived to our planet would have arrived before the planet had a proper atmosphere. And again; the bigger beings would have still died due to the impact or lack of minerals to feed on, leaving only bacteria behind.

I think finding lifeforms in space is going to be a massive disappointment to the public. Not because of the implications but because of the high expectations that pop-culture has created.

There's also the detail that time among other elements of existance is relative. Einstein might have scraped the surface but realisticly speaking this is still alchemy of sorts and the human lifespain simply isn't long enough for anybody to truly understand any little detail of anything. Chances are we're always too early or too late to meet with other lifeforms. Even if we'd have somekind of space teleportation technology and an alien civilization to meet up, it'd still be really fucked up from perspective of time.

Let's do the math:

3 steps 10% odds each = 0.1% chance of completing all 3, let's cut that by 10 again say 0.01%

So odds are 0.0001% of those planets have life that reaches step 3.

Thats 40,000 planets using worse odds than what you started with.

I'll add that this doesn't say that there are 40,000 of these other races right now, there are theories that life couldn't have started much earlier than it did for us in this galaxy due to the number of supernova GRBs is the early galaxy. So we may end up the elder race of the galaxy.
