Also check out overthewire.org, vulnhub.com
There you can find "wargames" that will teach you some stuff. overthewire has stuff for absolut beginners and vulnhub has virtual machines with security holes in them that you are expected to exploit (also beginner friendly, but you need to have some knowledge already). Also download Kali Linux, boot it in a VM (like VMWare or VirtualBox) and play with it.
