What you're probably thinking of is TOR network, which is a network of highly anonymized and encrypted nodes that facilitates the secure exchange of data. A 'Dark net' is typically smaller than TOR and is instead used privately for the exchange of very high volumes of data (e.g pirate groups exchanging warez with topsites)

TOR is often used for the purchase and sale of drugs, the dissemination of child pornography and other criminal activities.

TOR is often known as the 'Deep web', but this name can be attached to other networks (e.g Freenet, i2p, etc)

TOR is usually accessed through a browser, but you can also use router wizardry to route all your network's traffic through TOR. TOR might be famous for the illegal stuff, but really, its just a network like any other than happens to be anonymous. People use it for whistleblowing, imageboards, whatever. I host sites on it for ripoff cicada puzzles.

Despite popular belief, TOR is not truly anonymous. Its very hard to follow back, and as far as I know requires a lot of parties to cooperate, but if you were worth the time, effort, and money someone could find you. The path does exist.

Do yourself a favor and download tor. Google a hidden wiki link, shouldn't be hard to find on google and you don't wanna click on random .onion links posted here. Hidden wiki is perfectly legal. It will give you a good idea of whats on the network, and links to plenty of illegal stuff. Its nowhere near as cool as it sounds.

There are, or at least were, several wikis. They just generally aren't as good.

The hidden wiki should still have a link to something called Tor Links. Its just a big list of links to whats available on tor. Not sure if its still updated or if it still exists.

Also I'm assuming most markets still make you pay to access them.
