I guess that's true in a tournament setting. I play most of my games while coaching my local middle school club so I always have them play it out, except two of the kids who actually can identify forced mates a few moves out.

Also, side note on your thoughts on formal theory: I really do agree with you, and I wish that theory wasn't as advanced as it is so that we would have to rely on ourselves. But because everyone in clubs n shit all know it you have to learn and study it yourself just to be able to compete. Not fun but gives you a better understanding

I never learned theory because I'm contemptuous of dogma in general. It was a real problem in college. If I bothered to study I'd probably be a hell of a lot better. But that's kind of why I like teaching the kids, because you end up in positions that you'll never see in a theory game.

One of the kids I worked with about 5 years ago is rated over 2000 now though, so that makes me feel like I'm doing some good at least.

No pics. It's usually just stuff like awkward pawn chains when the kids know about how pawn defend but don't know opening principles, or moving their A and H pawns early to get their rooks out fast. They make great teaching examples.

You can find these positions yourself if you find a 10-14 year-old kid and just teach them basics then play a few games. Most of them try this stuff at least once.

I guess I'm salty about 1500 because I seem to encounter at least one middle school kid with a comparable rating every year and I know I wasn't this good back then. Just ego stuff I guess.

Funny thing, I was on the top HS chess team in the city (top 5 city), and I never practiced or learned any formal theory. Went undefeated in league play. Now I go on that chess site and I'm only like a 1000.

HS chess is a lot like the wild west or middle ages in terms of acceptable gambit piles and the fact that you can sometimes completely ignore your opponent and just keep attacking until he loses count or something. I had some games where I made the other kid cry because he had two queens but I checked him forever until he lost. I feel like I could do really well in the middle ages. We've literally evolved the game to a point where computers are better suited to it than human beings.
