Except that under the thin veneer of what appears to be a socialist paradise, you have a state that refuses to see reason anymore and hold to the ubsurd belief that radical liberalism will save the day. I was speaking of Europe as that seems to be what OP is referencing, but it does translate to other cultures as well; from primarily while cultures to Arabic to African, the more common goals a group ends up sharing, the less of a stigma the idea of socialism has to those groups. Hell, where i grew up, the community had a pot for the college education of us kids, and this was 18 years ago in america. Our parents knew each other, and our grandparents did too. Culturally, these similar goals breed cooperation.

That said the modern state has so many groups with differing agendas under its single flag that Socialism in large nations will not work. On an individual state level, its even pushing it as capitalism is engrained within us. You only see successful socialist policies appear in small countries with populations less then say 100 million, and even then you cannot really call them successful; to those who wish to get ahead, they face enormous taxes, and have to battle a system that taxes the hell out of luxury goods for those who want to upgrade their standard of living. (See car taxes.)

Implementation, small scale, community based, is the limit to what socialism will see overwhelming support in; wanting tax payer money to go towards programs that not every community will benefit from is theft. So, how do you get OVERWHELMING support for socialism in your country? Your best bet to get socialism adopted is to increase the homogeneity of the nation and to sculpt it into a single national identity.

How many great thinkers, artists, inventors etc, have wasted their lives working in jobs just to make ends meet, or spent an entire life chasing material things as if they were chasing a rainbow, all because that is what we are "told" we are supposed to do.

That would mean there is a choice to not have utopia. If your goal is to have an anarcho society, I'm all on board with that. It sounds nice on paper but in order to create that paradise, you're gonna have to recreate human nature from a 'new clay'. It's been tried and it's extremely ugly. What we end up seeing though is that once the state grows to an immense size, it doesn't just give up that power. It holds it and fights to contain it. If your goal is to move towards a more harmonious system, the closest thing intellectually would be anarcho-capitalism. At least that system says the only way to deal with one another is through free trade and contract with one another. That's why a big part of the ideology is the 'non-aggression principle'.

I'm willing to concede that history looking backwards with a certain lens does have a Hegelian-esque type of march through history that is bettering man to a "utopia". I believe it was Marx who called the "iron laws of history" that society would naturally progress to an anarcho type of society. I just don't think moving towards a more centralized state would move mankind towards a "utopia". Just seems counter productive if the goal is to have better people relying on one another. Einstein is right though that education is the key to creating better humans. I think that's one thing a lot of people have accepted is that people are degenerates by nature in varying degrees. imo, you are overcomplicating what socialism is, and in this aspect of socialism, what works on a microcosm works on the macrocosm, so eventually the whole world can be working towards the same goal.

That is your life, first 20-30 years, basically half your life, that is what you are groomed for.
Where actually at bare minimum all you needed to know was how to plant seeds in the ground and tend soil.
Now think of those 20-30 years, you had all that time to learn everything you did learn, but you had a choice, and you aspired to be better, or do something individual that was unique, possibly could have changed the entire world, and had the ability and resources to do it.
