I had to use a company laptop at my last job working in a call center. When the IT guy issued it to me asked him if it had been wiped. He said it was just the next one on the pile and quit bugging him about it. I refused to touch the thing, and he got real pissy. He told to take it or get fired, I walked straight to the directors office. The IT guys ran after me holding the laptop, he actually tried to get me to take it, I practically beat his ass to get him to stop. We get grabbed by security an hauled into the director's office. He starts in about disrupting agents on the floor and threatening a write up. I tell him I'm there to resign because dickhead IT guy won't give me a wiped laptop and I won't accept one that's just handed to me. Well the director doesn't think this is any problem, he tells the IT guy to get me a laptop and wipe it clean right there. The IT guy starts complaining about updates and a bunch of other stuff. The director says fine, let's look at the laptop you were trying to give this young man. All the sudden that IT guy wants to be out of there. He tried to smash the laptop to keep it away from the director. Well, I got escorted out of the office and was given a week off paid. When I got back the IT guy was nowhere to be seen and not mentioned at all. The new IT guy was still wiping and restoring all the laptop inventory and the TL's and support were running old consoles to do their job. My trainer took me aside and told me the laptops had hidden files containing questionable materials and they were invisibly acting as file servers on a tor network. If I had just accepted that laptop there's no telling how long it would have lasted, the guy had only worked there a month.
