If a regular steel car hits a brick wall at 60mph, and crumples 40% of the chassis instantly (cockpit level), how well would a Ti shell do?

Not a whole lot, commonly used Al alloys are as strong by weight as Ti anyway but ofc the Ti of the same weight would be thinner. We've already surpassed them with Carbon composites though.

Haven't figured out what to call it yet. Also, all conventional cutting/grinding methods have proved ineffective in actually trying to shape it. If you were hit by anything like a sword of bullet, the armour would shatter, as some materials are very strong in some directions across the crystals and very brittle in other directions
>>
>>726074051
if you want carbon armor you would need to layer carbon sheets called graphene.

I heard you can stab a sheet the thickness of serran wrap with a pencil and the force of an elephant and it wouldn't penetrate. Though wouldn't the pencil break idk scientist make the stupidest analogies.

Actually that's present on most carbide-hardened alloys, being the cobalt-chromium-tungsten Stellite alloy the most used.

Stellite is applied as a coating through thermal aspersion, forming a layer which thickness varies on a range from 250 to 350 microns.

It's used for high corrosion resistance and wear resistance. Examples are: valve inner mechanisms for corrosion and erosion, M60 machinegun barrels and machining tools.

>>
>>726074697
I second that. Any of you half wits ever tried to machine titanium? Fuckin pain in the dick
>>
>>726074051
Diamond is too hard. Excessive hardness makes it virtually unscratchable, but its tenacity (impact absorption) is greatly reduced. Thus its brittle.

Diamond is better used as a powder coating to avoid superficial wear on machining tools for example. As a powder, its low tenacity isn't a problem, thus its high hardness and thermal resistance/dimensional stability makes it perfect to coat cutting equipment.

Instead, go for this >>726074285

What I don't get is why so much hype on carbon atom bonds? Are they stronger than any other atomic bonds?

What would happen if we made atom thick titanium sheets?
>>
>>726073998
Yeah, though its not like its 100% ineffective. Its just we are going thru way too much to just try and put a small scratch in it. It took completely ruining 7 diamond tips just to make a measurable mark.

Depends on the application. Gold and platinum are the best metals for extremely corrosive enviroments, like high-temperature chloridric acid.

However their cost are prohibitive for ordinary industry process equipments.

Aside, diamond is also suitable for coating bioelectric implants. It shields the device from the effects of the body, and vice versa, while having almost no effect on electrical properties.

This is at the nm scale, of course; maybe as high as a micron. I forget exactly. The seminar explaining the process was a while back.

Diamond has some cool uses.

This.

The earth consists mostly of iron. It's the single most important metal in our bodies, enabling us to breathe. And, we'll all BE iron in the end, once every atom of matter in the universe has been cycled through enough supernovas, all matter in the universe will have turned into iron atoms, forming an extremely low-density, almost-zero-temperature ocean of iron liquid covering the entire cosmos.
Sat what you will about other metals, but iron will get the last laugh.

Due to extensive research done by the University of Pittsburgh, diamond has been confirmed as the hardest metal known to man. The research is as follows. Pocket-protected scientists built a wall of iron and crashed a diamond car into it at 400 miles per hour, and the car was unharmed. They then built a wall out of diamond and crashed a car made of iron moving at 400 miles an hour into the wall, and the wall came out fine. They then crashed a diamond car made of 400 miles per hour into a wall, and there were no survivors. They crashed 400 miles per hour into a diamond traveling at iron car. Western New York was powerless for hours. They rammed a wall of metal into a 400 mile per hour made of diamond, and the resulting explosion shifted the earth's orbit 400 million miles away from the sun, saving the earth from a meteor the size of a small Washington suburb that was hurtling towards mid-western Prussia at 400 billion miles per hour. They shot a diamond made of iron at a car moving at 400 walls per hour, and as a result caused two wayward airplanes to lose track of their bearings, and make a fatal crash with two buildings in downtown New York. They spun 400 miles at diamond into iron per wall. The results were inconclusive. Finally, they placed 400 diamonds per hour in front of a car made of wall traveling at miles per iron, and the result proved without a doubt that diamonds were the hardest metal of all time, if not just the hardest metal known to man.
