Thread for older anons (40+) on /b.
I was in a feels thread yesterday that turned out to be a pretty good thread. Someone expressed surprise that people my age (45) and above were still browsing and posting on /b. I'd say there's a fair amount of us here, posting, lurking, and just generally dicking around for various reasons.
Anyway, if any of you past the midpoint of your lives feel like it, post here. Drop some wisdom. Rant. Rave. Post tits or dicks, whatever your flavor.
42 here. I never grew up
>>725845278
Yeah, I guess same here. Started browsing /b 8 or 9 years ago? I never really kept track. Didn't really post until the last year or so.
Welp, guess no one's around, so just dumping till the thread gets pruned.
Off to bed finally, have a tits bump
>>725844654
I'm 35 in May, can I join in chaps?
>>725846264
Sure thing. Looks like it's just you and I here anyway.
>>725846373
How long ya been on here?
>>725844654
As a 20 year old I gotta say, this thread contains very little wisdom. Its as though youre all emotionally stunted at around my age anyway, so what does it matter?
>>725846471
Since probably 2008 or 9 I think, don't really remember. You?
>>725846471
Im old enough to have fapped to this "thinking mans crumpet" on a dialup connection.
>>725846531
Welp, like what most of /b has probably experienced at least once in their lives, I had a party and no one showed up.
But since you're here, and you've contributed nothing but a bit of bitching, why don't you give us a little of your oh-so-valuable experience?
>>725846639
LOL she's still pretty hot. Strikes me as being unstable and needy, which usually means great in bed but shitty everywhere else.
>>725846695
If your plates are starting to get moldy, dont rinse them off, it only makes them slimy. If you eat directly off the mold, it doesnt really get on your food.
>>725846555
Nice trips man, not gonna lie, I've been here for about 4 years, but I lurked and adapted to the culture before posting.
>>725846639
I remember the excitement when the dialup tone fired up, limitless hardcore filth from TheHun.net, I had to use softcore British cunt mags until then.
>>725844654
About to turn 44.
Been here 10 years. It's basically habit and I keep hoping it will eventually jump the shark and go back to being underground again.
As for wisdom:
Don't get involved with horse girls.
All women are nuts or broken or both just find the ones whose nuts or broken isn't contagious.
Dress for the job you want, not the job you have; within reason.
Do not have open relationships or fuck buddies, but also do not leap into committed monogamous relationships too quickly. Date and date seriously. Then commit fully. Everything else burns itself down eventually.
>>725846844
Jeez, I can't find my old images folders. Made me think of all the fucked up nasty rooms people have posted on here. It's amazing some of the filth people live in.
>>725847128
>Don't get involved with horse girls.
LOL Fuck if this ain't the truth. My first wife was a 'horse woman'. The horse will always be first in her life. They are always batshit crazy. They will fucking bankrupt you with that shit.
>hoping it will eventually jump the shark and go back to being underground again
Amen, brother.
>>725847212
Rest of my place is fine. Dishes suck.

>>725847128
I'm 53 and you are 100% on target.
Just realized most current anon won't remember the nightmare that was post IDs on /b/ let alone the glorious time before both they and captcha more or less ruined the best threads (combos)
>>725847693
Do you remember when post ID's were implemented? I guess I could look it up, but I do remember it.
Hey 20 year old here.
Might as well ask you older folk some questions.
Did you guys ever have debt? If so was it worth it in the end?
What's a good way to survive without a college degree?
If you aren't married, why didn't you get married?
And also, what's your opinion of the "need" to have children?
>>725848119
normal people dont have debt. Youre a failure
>>725847892
Sorry, by remember when I don't mean the exact date I mean the current young guns weren't here yet.

>>725848119
>debt
Pretty unavoidable. Do the math up front, make sure you can carry the weight and keep your paper right.
>degree
No. Get one. Just get a real one not like English Lit or some bullshit. But without one you will be poor and will work your ass off.
>children
No one needs to have kids. Near as I can tell people with kids guilt everyone else into hAving them so we will all be miserable. Want proof? Say you're going to adopt non-infant kids who need parents and listen to the insane rankings from people about how that's a terrible ide. Sub-text: if they aren't yours and aren't born to you we don't get to watch your misery.
>>725846639

>>725848119
>Did you guys ever have debt? If so was it worth it in the end?
Yeah, I did. Mostly because I let my ex wife do whatever the fuck she wanted so she would leave me alone, and ended up having to go through a bankruptcy where I paid most of it back. It's a long story, but I think the answer for you would be it depends. Is the debt going towards something that will have a positive impact on your life? Or is it just stupid shit that is letting you have fun now? Is it an emotional want, or a need?
>What's a good way to survive without a college degree?
IT is what I have the most experience with. I don't have a degree, and do alright. Also pretty damn easy to freelance, especially if you work for small offices that can't afford a full time IT person. You can do networking, computer repair, and if you are decent at it write a bit of code.
>If you aren't married, why didn't you get married?
Married twice, can't answer.
>And also, what's your opinion of the "need" to have children?
Didn't want kids with the first wife. Second wife, we can't have kids. I regret it, but I can live with it. When you find the right person, the urge to have kids can be pretty strong. At least with me.

God yes, or some other shit, like a language study. Unless you are going to teach abroad.

>debt
I see. Guess I have to get debt to get a degree then. I don't seem to have a choice.
>degree
What degree do you have? Is it worth getting now?
I'm still unsure about what degree to do.
>children
Yeah fuck kids. I can't stand them. Why would I ever want to make one?
>>725848119
Debt has been around throughout civilized times.
It's nothing, you're not your debt.
Serve in the military.
Work your way up the ladder, if you're patient.
Be a creative.
Open your own business.
Never been married because I know that relationships turn to crap after a few years, unless you are true friends.
Nobody "needs" to have children.
>>725848693
If you're in the US, try to get a job with a state uni. Even if you are a groundskeeper or in maintenance. A lot of times if you are an employee you can take a certain amount of credits per semester for free. You have to pay for books, and if you fuck up you have to pay it back (just the class you fuck up, not all of it). So there's some good accountability there.
>>725848643
WTF? I was agreeing with the post.
>>725848756
>Serve in the military.
It's not for everyone, I know I couldn't have made it. I worked for the civilian defense department for a while. The military is a unique (and uniquely fucked up) environment.
That being said, it can pay for college. So might not be a bad idea with an exit strategy.
>>725848907
And was respecting you for doing so.
Im 40, not trolling in a "respectable" thread.

Okay, OP out. Gotta go change my oil and wait for some service people to show up at my house. Peace and monkey grease, my friends. If I get the chance, maybe I'll come back and start a new thread in the afternoon.

My degree is in mathematics. I was a school teacher for a while then transitioned into IT. I now work in lower management in medical software.
Just remember most advice you get from the culture is intended to make you part of that culture. Think laterally and you can find your own way through the maze.
>>725848646
>travel
It can open your mind but won't do so fundamentally. You have to make it happen, pick the right places and get off the tourist track. Get lost in Tokyo on foot. Join a futbol riot in Barcelona. But don't think snorkeling in Grand Caymen or staring at a Buddha in Thailand is gong to make you a less plastic person.
>>725850030

Debt - unavoidable. Pay that shit as best you can. Nowadays a mans worth is judged by his credit score.
Degree? I'm a 42 year old factory mechanic making $26 an hour. No degree here, but I regret not going to college. It does open a ton of doors. Just choose something that has value. Also, trade schools are a good decision. Not everyone can be a programmer, artist or engineer. There will always be a need for those who get their hands dirty in repair or construction.
Marriage? Not necessary, but if you find someone whom you can't live without... its nice to be married. I've been married for almost 15 years. It takes work and compromise, but it can be a great thing.
Kids? You don't have to have kids, but they're the perfect gift for selfish people. You realize that the world doesn't revolve around you and the love you'll feel for them is uncompromising and eternal. Being a parent isn't for the weak. Neither is getting old.

Nice, Anon. 43 here and feel I'm traveling in your wake. Remember Elvis croaking on the can, Lennon assassinated, and Reagan and Brady being shot. Yup and no it wasn't worth it. Putting yourself at financial risk to allow yourself a quick benefit you will come to realise is shit.
Now I save my money then purchase what I want and yes that does include cars etc. The only real debt I have is my mortgage and I'll have paid that off 10 years early.

I don't have one but I got many qualifications specific to my trade by working hard and being put forward by the companies I used to work for
>If you aren't married, why didn't you get married?
Girl I was gonna marry was killed in an RTA a few days before we were gonna announce our engagement. That was about 17 years ago. Only just got engaged again recently. I've not been single all those 17 years and have kids to another woman but I never wanted to marry her.
>And also, what's your opinion of the "need" to have children?
Need is a strong word - I wanted kids. Best thing I ever did. Remember if you wait until you think you can afford a baby you'll never have one.

Keep your debt manageable. Don't extend yourself! What you think can't possibly happen will happen at some point, and your sob story won't mean shit to the creditor.
Get a college degree, and like someone else said, make sure it's in a decent field of study. This will make life easier as you get older. Protip: keep the debt tip in mind if you need loans. Consider doing community college for first two years to save money and get your general ed requirements on the cheap.
I got married, but it's a coin flip and really depends on who you are a sa person. i think it suits some people very well, others not so much. know yourself and make a good decision.
No one needs to have children. If you really want them, you'll know it. My advice is have them sooner rather than later.

The youngfags don't appreciate wise platitudes. It's their loss.
>Did you guys ever have debt? If so was it worth it in the end?
Yes. No.
My advise, don't go into more debt than you can pay off in a month's worth of wages. I'm debt free now and loving it.
>What's a good way to survive without a college degree?
Computer operator. Sadly, it's a form of employment that does not really exist any more.
>If you aren't married, why didn't you get married?
My one true love didn't pan out. Never met anyone else that kept me interested for more than two years. Why? I'm not cut out for marriage and I'm OK with that. Took me a while to understand this.
I've found people married for more than a decade describe the marriage in neutral terms. It's not something they care to change, but it's not something they brag about either. I don't advise avoidance, but one should lower one's expectations.
>And also, what's your opinion of the "need" to have children?
Around the age of forty one feels an urge to pass oneself on in some form. Kids and all.
The feeling passes.

45 here. History professor. Married, couple spawn. Live in a nice house in suburban Minneapolis.
Wisdom: I see lots of shithead kids flunk out of school because they don't want to be there. They enroll because they think it's expected or whatever. These kids are usually clueless as to what they want to do and are therefore completely unfocused in class. Unfocused in college is a really bad thing for your future.
Beer and pussy is a truly wonderful combination, but going into huge debt to flunk out and have no job prospects is fucking stupid.
Go to a Junior/Community college. Get the 'advanced high school' shit out of the way. Figure out what you want to do with your life. Or, failing that, find something that pays the bills that you can tolerate. Then decide if more education debt is worth it. (It's probably not.)
"Find your passion" is some tumblerina-level horseshit. Find what you can tolerate. Find what's gonna get you what you want in life.
I have a friend who grew up dirt poor, farming tobacco in Kentucky. He's a doc now. Hates it. Loathes his disgusting patients. But he wanted his kids to never know want, so he makes a fortune doing something he hates. Passion is shit. Find what will get you what you want.
And when you're in your 20s, fuck anyone who is willing.
>>725860086
/pol/ is great for discussions assuming you can sift through the shite.
The trick is to engage people who can articulate their thoughts well enough in the manner you would an adult. Actual discussions of topics happens quite frequently when you do this.

I write fan-fiction and it's hellofa fun. Some people read it.
To do it well you are forced to learn how to write well, even if it is fan-fiction. After you learn a few techniques, and with a fair bit of practice and study, you will approach your reading differently. You'll be amazed when you finally see how the pros manage it. One may become a successful writer. At the very least it will greatly increase your enjoyment of reading.
It's all good.
Keep writing.

OP here, just took the dick out of my mouth so I could type.
Yeah, I was kinda hoping for just a good all around conversational thread. Usually when you call out the older /btards, if they are available you tend to get some good content.
Peace!

>"Find your passion" is some tumblerina-level horseshit.
God yes. I think I heard Mike Rowe say this (not sure, was on the Art of Charm podcast): Find a job you can tolerate, then bring your passion.
>Get the 'advanced high school' shit out of the way.
I used to call it 'the thirteenth grade'.
>>725859989
I'm on Smashwords. Wrote Regions of Passion (fantasy), Crystal Grader (coming of age), and Splattered (grindhouse pulp).
>>725860232
Thanks for the advice anon.
Always been lurking on /lgbt/, /b/ and /pol/ but never actually posted. I've been around for quite a bit though.
However, it's nice to see civilized convos here.
Don't get me wrong, Im the 1st one to partake in stupid shit every now and then....
Thanks.
>>725860137
Mike Page has a brilliant speech on why you shouldn't follow your dreams: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVEuPmVAb8o
>>725860357
Plus, I'd add on the upside, you don't seem like a semi-retarded douchebag when you post on the internet.
So many native English speakers don't realize the importance of correct grammar. It's like dressing nicely. If you don't get it, you don't get it. But if you do, so do others.
>>725860401
OP ffs!
Who needs a free mouth to type!
You fucking straight bastard!
42
no advice
fuck it up yourself
>>725860357
Thanks for this. It also doesn't help that my marketing skills are near zero. I'm just terrible at selling.
>>725860303
I'm not rich, I do okay. I wouldn't want to be in Wall Street or finance and a fucking degree is not for everyone. I think the asker was specifically hinting at skipping the degree, at least at this point in his life. I will say the longer you wait the harder it is to attain a degree, and your chances of completing even an AS are pretty slim. Oh, and there are a fuck ton of business degree grads in middle management that are the first fuckers canned in a layoff. You can say 'but I mean a GOOD degree'. That doesn't mean shit. Not everyone can go to Harvard, or lives in a giant metro area to take advantage of said degree.
Hell, there are plenty of people that are perfectly content not making money.
I do think you're right about income equality, but there's enough space for everyone.
You will learn that every decision you made for your first 40 years was a massive fuckup anyway, so do whatever you want.
Also, take occasional breaks from being the Internet hate machine and do something nice for a stranger on the interwebs every now and again.
Don't take advice from adults who have spent 10 years on a weeaboo website instead of doing something productive with their time.
>>725860712
Proper grammar, in any language, is the key to conveying your thoughts accurately.
Even something as simple as a misplaced comma will skew the meaning of a sentence.
>>725860137
Parole sante (holy words)
>>725860615
Haven't tried Smashwords. Been published through small press anthologies. I enjoy writing but I don't have the time anymore.
>>725860879
You're damn tootin'. I cringe with misplaced commas and other grammatical errors as they're like manifestations of the errors in their brain syntax, their head-OS.
>>725844654
>>725860615
Fuck the haters. Even if nobody reads them, it's cool as fuck that you wrote 3 books. Hope you keep writing. There are worse ways to spend your time.
>>725860931
I never liked writing. I liked having written, so I put out 3 books. Pretty fucked up.
>>725861186
Would lick the browneye.
>>725861151
Funny you view it that way. I've been typing online for so many god damn years that my typing speed is about the same as my thought speed. In fact, I'm better at articulating via text than through voice!
So what I type is just that. A raw unfiltered version of my brain's activity. What I type, how I type! is directly linked to how the thoughts are forming in my head at the time.
Along with a few post typing edits here and there.
>>725861218
I appreciate this. Thanks a million. I'd buy you a beer if I could.
>>725860510
>I used to call it 'the thirteenth grade'.
Yep. Get the general ed stuff out of the way. Maybe decide you like science. Maybe decide you hate math. Whatever. It's better to figure this shit out at ~$2K a semester than 15K. Then transfer to a university if you want. You miss out of two years of partying, but shit, you're a /b/tard anyway, so it's not like that's any big loss.
Gonna start waving my cane here (get off my lawn and all that,) but I think too many parents take care of their kids rather than teach their kids to take care of themselves. I see so many kids in my 100-level US class that don't have a clue about anything. Due dates, meal times, whatever. So many of them expect to be led around by the pecker to their next whatever.
end rant.
RE: Mike Rowe, yes, he's generally on the right path with what he says, but where he's right to say that society generally denigrates those without higher education, he denigrates higher ed. Both have a very important purpose in society.
Anyway, cheer. Off to teach some idiots about the Progressive Era. Should be interesting.
advice?
sure why not.
advice.
I don't browse /b/ too much any more but this is the best thread I've seen in ages OP, thanks
>>725861222
It's definitely a struggle. Once the story is out of your head though, it's quite a relief.
>>725861360
Thanks for the kind words.
>>725858495
been watching Quincy reruns, damn weird that they do blood tests for type and never mention dna. After watching csi's and shit for the last 15 years, its a breath of fresh air
>>725861335
Not the fellow you're talking to.
But I hate my old man for making life a living hell at home. Just short of literally kicking me out.
But I respect the man. Because I'm an independent adult! Been on my own over a decade, and things are looking up at the moment!
Where as my peers a few years younger, are busy blaming white males for all their shortcomings.
>>725861360
I agree. Great thread here.
a tad more of that there advice..
>>725861482
Goddamn. Quincey. I used to watch that as a kid. The opening sequence with the morgue scene always killed me.
49 here. Been lurking and posting on /b/ for years.
In life I have made many mistakes, fucked a shit load of femanons and have two amazing kids. I have no degree but taught myself the skills to work in finance and the resources industry.
Most important thing in life is to sell yourself because no one else will do it for you. Show confidence even though you may not have all the knowledge/experience required in any situation.
>>725850194
Also, most peer advice is to keep you from success beyond your peers.
>>725861335
My wife has a hard time with this, with our stepkids. We were both latchkey kids, so I'm not sure where the disconnect comes in. I guess it's that we know exactly how much shit we were able to get into unsupervised.
I don't listen to Rowe all that much (never saw more than a few eps of dirty jobs) but I've got respect for the dude. But I'm also old enough to know not to get all of your information from one source.
>>725861492
Sort of a crash course in resilience. School of hard knocks, whatever.
It's amazing what you can accomplish when you just have to do it.
>>725861295
Amen anon, I'm exactly the same. My writing is awesome and I'm extremely good at chatting with chicks on dating sites. Can be a bit different face to face though
>>725861557
speaking of..
44. Started lurking during the caturday, Habbo raid and Tom Green prank days. /b/ was never good, but it's only gotten worse. And /pol/ should go the way of /new/
Don't have any wisdom, aside from repeating other oldfags. The only thing I would add is that 4chan used to be ironic. The point was that the interwebs isn't real life. That's the meta meme that acts as a foundation for all the great classic memes. A lot of y'all newfags seem to have missed the joke and treat the internet as serious bizness. Or maybe the interbutt is real life now. In which case, we all need to seek professional help.
>>725861580
Britbong here, anyone remember Saphire and Steel, it was a weird scifi show with David McAllum and Joanna Lumley
>>725861661
I would argue that being the most respectable person imaginable is better than the classic "fake it 'till you make it".
For me, I get respect from everywhere. To the point I kind of expect it. People who get to know me are more than willing to help me out from time to time. Confidence is growing from that, along with every step along the way. Every mountain turned into a mole hill, and all that.
People respect honesty; even though most find it strange and suspicious at first. Due to it being surprisingly rare.
It's not an easy path to walk in my experience... But I find it's better than "fake it 'till you make it". Easier on the soul. Better frame of mind. That kind of thing.
>>725861801
Nothing in life really motivates me either. I've learned that NEED is the greatest motivator. Then got locked in the eternal debate of "what do I WANT after the need is met".
>>725861862
Yeah, I'm kinda strange in that regard. Not sure why it tends to go this way... but I type out a well articulated response to an ad or posting... I get nothing.
Similar in the RL. Except it's more of a failure to approach in that case.
But, once things get going, in either context, I do great!
So long as my interest/focus is still there though.... That internal motivation is kind of important for most things.
>>725845669
where is it from?
>>725862136
Nope but Joanna Lumley, anytime of the day.... I guess Im a necro :/
>>725861986
Yes, i see that, but thats what Madonna did, and after seeing her on that womens day thing i now realise she's an insufferable cunt
>>725861986
true shit, anon.
>>725862332
Madonna was great! So long as she was a guest on Letterman....
But all credit goes to Dave. Dave + Madonna = laughs.
Dave doesn't like Madonna....
>>725861986
Okay. I do that. All the fucking time...
Now explain to me how I stop being so fucking cynical and hating my fellow man?
>>725862332
>i now realise she's an insufferable cunt
I guess she can live with that, too.
>>725859121
Just turned 26. Thanks anon.
47 here. I started checking /b/ about 10 years ago. I was working night shift for many years and found I could joke and BS with other people while the rest of the world around me was asleep.
>>725862002
I always liked the meme that anon was just one person
>>725862266
Forgot to mention i'm 42. Was never a fan of Lumley, used to enjoy myself watching Dempsey and Makepeace with Glynis Barber though
>>725862178
I'm not saying live your life as a lie, I am saying if an opportunity comes along that you wish to grab then take take it. Don't be put off and make excuses. If there is a gap between your ability/knowledge and what is required then don't let that stop you. Be confident and learn what's required to get up to scratch.
Please do not compromise your morals
>>725848119
there is no 'need' to have kids, or do anything. seriously, anything. kill yourself today, tomorrow the rest of us will wake up and go on. no need for anything.
that being said, don't listen to these jaded old faggots. Kids are wonderful and amazing and will give you a perspective that childless old men who still browse /b will never ever understand.
Do whats right for you, but don't close your mind off to what could be the best decision in your life.
>>725862402
>>725862454
I liked Madonna's career, i pleasured myself with Madonna posters and you're right, i'm sure she can live with my opinion of her (without the actual knowledge of my opinion)
>>725859121
Tit's and 100 internet to you good sir.
>>725862769
Thank you for better articulating your thoughts, anon.
I'm sure others will understand better now.
But you're 100% right about jumping on opportunity. Opportunity can lead to success, and success leads to your dreams. Whatever they may be.

Oh fuck it's madonna
See>>725862332
>>725862947

No one is as insufferable as Madonna! I'll fucking REE you to death, you fucker!
>>725853324
bullshit.
if you are 43 then you were only 3 when elvis died.
Advice from an oldfag: don't wait too long to quit something that you hate. Careers, relationships, the place you live. I wasted 10 years in a job I despised. I've known a lot of people who have done some sort of life change, often for less money. None have regretted that decision. We all regret waiting so long and losing precious years.
Don't dawdle. Just quit. You will be fine.
>>725860137
Agreed.
I bailed on my Philosophy degree after six years of taking full time classes dicking around among physics, economics, and philosophy majors.
The nail in my first college career's coffin was a 100-level argumentative writing class I had to take and the prof gave me a C, lol.
Just getting my head on straight and diminishing my ego a bit would've served me better than going straight to college and wasting $50k.
Things worked out. I own two small businesses that provide my wife and two-kids-plus-a-third-on-the-way with a comfortable three-percenter income that allows us to send our kids to private school.
I promised myself I'd go back and get a mathematics degree (I'm Asian and I enjoy it, lol) before our son graduates high school.
I'm not giving him an excuse not to go.
>>725863090
Uhhh, one modification to your statement.
Make sure you have something lined up before you "Just quit". Putting yourself in a shitty situation is never advisable.
But moving on from what you hate is legit advise.

I'm going to graduate this December as a history teacher. I love history and I will have summers off. Plus I still have another 30 years of work left I might as well do something I like.
Hoping to travel more once I work and have summers off.
