Why hasn't the rest of the world joined up with Britain and began using our glorious plug and socket design?

It's better in every way.

>strong triangular design
>children can't electrocute themselves by sticking a single object into one hole unlike the American design
>easily replaceable fuses
>bottom of plug coated in insulation so accidental electrocution is very difficult

Get on our level, rest of the world

Because the British plug and socket uses a different voltage standard than other countries and bringing over an American made (or other country) electronic and plugging it into the grid could cause shorting or fire. As such, the electronics are made incompatible.

You all don't appreciate the subtlty of the UK design.

1. The earth pin engages first improving safety
2. The earth pin opens spring-loaded shutters that prevent access to the live and neutrals
3. The socket can come with its own isolating switch (see pic). You can leave devices plugged in but completely cut off from power
>>
>>725840006
yeah think about it. its total bullshit.

To compound the UK superiority, we use a "ring main " approach to wiring the power sockets, protected by RCDs, whereas most other countries use a radial system.

The UK system was designed by competent engineers. It also has enough voltage to power large devices with half the current of the USA and other 110V systems, reducing cable diameter.

As said it is indeed easy to electrocute yourself with a design, because the socket in the wall is not countersunk. It is possible to hold a metal object to the pins while plugging it in, where as with a countersunk socket it is impossible to touch the metal of the plug and have it being connected to the power in the socket simultaneously

OP's proposal is misleading and completely wrong.

Deutschland has the best electrical socket and plug design. UK electrical connectivity was copied from a prototype German design, and they used spies to obtain that information. Germany hadnt settled on the current design until two major revisions after the design being used by the UK.

Just as America received jet engine components in WWII from the British. The General Electric factory in Lockland, Ohio, USA received a disassembled jet engine and today owes the UK everything. Rolls-Royce jet engine components are Still being sent to America for service and also Tactical Service Storage. TSS is a backup of technological components to be used as examples of perfected technology with an archive of its entire design criteria. GE still uses devolved information from the UK aerospace scientists. This is because of the AusCanNZUKUSA agreement.

One of the other things being archived in Tactical Service Storage, the major expense of the USA's military budget, is storing any and all ARM processor photolithographic shadow masks, mothballed production equipment, and of course all the design parameters.

The USA is still acting as if it knows it there will be a horrific nuclear war. Nobody cares if the UK uses slightly inferior technology.

American and British water (heavy or light) nuclear reactors are inferior to future German designs using molten salt, ie, Thorium reactors.

Depends on the appliance.

Let's assume you have an appliance with an internal fuse, which is sound practice to protect the cable. Let's assume your appliance develops a fault to earth, and the fuse blows. If the neutral is fused (because of the ambidextrous connector), the live is still connected to the appliance, and the fault to earth has not been disconnected.

The same with an integral switch on an appliance. if the wall connector is ambidextrous and you don't have a twin-gang integral switch (and most aren't, for cost reasons), then ypou can switch off the device but you might have broken the feed to neutral, leaving the live still connected to the appliance. So you think it's off but the whole thing is still live. It now develops a fault to the casing, or to earth - rinse the above and repeat.

Ambidextrous connectors are inherently less safe.

That design is a result of needing to rewire Britain quickly after the destruction of WWII. It is a good design but it means an ungrounded electric source in the home, which is quite dangerous. Did you know that outside of Britain it is common to have power outlets in bathrooms? I am an American who moved to the UK, and the hardest adjustment I have had to make was not having a power source next to the sink.

All British electrical sockets are grounded. Having power outrlets in UK bathrooms is not to code because of the risk of electrocution, even with RCDs, because of the moisture and wet skin potentially bridging the insulation of appliances.

Less dangerous with 110V, admittedly - potentially fatal with 240V

We've had ring mains for the best part of 75 years. Still our code requirement.

I have no idea why a correctly-wired ring main would give problems. I'm also not sure it's cheaper, as radial only requires one wire from consumer unit to each socket, whereas with a ring you have to daisy-chain every socket downstairs, and every socket upstairs (usually there are two rings in a UK house)
>>
>>725841922
actually 110v is more likely to kill you because it dose not have the "snap" that 220v does. ive got myself on a 220v socket when diagnosing a dryer that stopped, and i can tell you, your hand has no chance of being stuck to it for any length of time

cheap chinese sockets.

the developer(JKB homes) used chink shit for the sockets that started failing, exacerbated by the ring design of the mains.

when done right, ring mains works great, but in places like america, where you can use parts that are built just good enough to meet code, its a bad idea

Optimal would be 160v at 60Hz

Reasoning would be:

Wouldn't have to majorly change infrastructure.
All countries could cope with the change.

Efficient for substation collecting and power/current transmission.

Can be boosted with a simple ferrous choke/transformer in household for high voltage utilities fairly evenly.

Easier, less dangerous.

>inb4 socket types are 'dangerous'
All new American sockets have a push-contact safety feature that does not allow contact for electrical flow unless both sides of the socket's inlets have force evenly applied. (Plugging something in, durr)

120V tends to be not so good for electrical appliances though. They tend to last longer at higher voltages and lower ampages. Which is why the European 230V grid is superior to the American one. Also, higher voltages are easier to wire over longer distances. So you need fewer substations.

When will you 'Murrikins admit that you still live in a developing country as far as your basic infrastructure is concerned.
