There is a scam going around online where the cons run this exact play. Sometimes they do it from phone, sometimes Skype, but it is the same jank.

So I look it up online: surprise surprise there are several Craigslist/POF/tinder variants of this con. Go to police, hand the phone to the desk officer, he calls the guy and asks for badge numbers and precincts of where he will be allegedly report me. The guy has no real info, and the officer tells him "this is the police from [my town], here is all the info you need to reach us [gives it]. This young man is filing a report on you, right now, if you would like the case number please get a pen."

The communications will already be logged now and cross referencing the entries is relatively straightforward.

Using a VPN would obfuscate the fact, but OP said he wasn't using one anyway. I'm not a security guy, I just look at ways to process and implement the data, not track it. But I'm pretty sure government and military have the means to easily see through VPN anyway.
