Try Zhentar's WorldPawnGC mod. Worked wonders for my lag with late game colonies. Basically Rimworld keeps all the names of every creature and npc that comes across your colony, including all the various animals. Eventually that will totally slowdown your game. This just deletes those useless names from memory (who cares if Rooster134 comes back to you someday, right?).

It's a game I'm currently working on. It's about a guy who loses his job at a tech company. He then has to try and support himself quickly as he just lost his job. The only thing he could get was a dishwasher at a local pizza place. The just isn't necessarily hard but everyone there speaks another language than him and he can barely figure out what to do and he thinks they're always talking bad about him.

Then he gets a job offer from a company that is the rival to his former job. He takes the job and figures out that the rival company is doing some really illegal stuff but he is thrown right into the middle of it and can't get out cleanly. Then his boss takes him to dinner one night to talk to him about moving up in the company. What the main character doesn't know is that he will be initiated into some Masonic like brotherhood.

There's tons that make gameplay a bit easier from vanilla There are also ones that add new ways to play the game. A couple popular mods like that are TiberiumRim where it is set in the Command & Conquer universe. You have to try to control the spread of tiberium while fighting off various factions that want it. Another is the Call of Cthulhu mod. Adds a few factions and gameplay based off HP Lovecraft.

The mod scene is excellent for the game. Tons of quality of life improvement mods too. Steam has almost all of the mods but there are a couple (like the Zhentar's WorldPawnGC mod) that are exclusively on the Ludeon forums.
