Again, don't really have one. I like different bands quite a lot for different reasons. One moment I'll be listening to 80s heavy or thrash, the next it'll be modern deathcore, then goregrind, pornogrind, death metal, black metal and you get the idea. It really doesn't matter; it's all good stuff. But if it's any help, pic related is the CD I bought most recently.

He casually references and jokes about killing Euronymous. I'm not talking about edgy, twenty-something in Trondheim prison Varg; I'm talking forties, wife, kids and Thulean Perspective Varg.
Nigga's cray.

That's sort of metal in general; also sort of every other genre of music in existence.
All genres have their wanky moments and hordes of unbearable fans.
>>
>>725105368
I've been listening to them for about 10-15 years now. I first read about them in some kind of low-rent media/street press mag here in Australia after the cops had raided them for child porn.
>>
>>725105311
Yeah, my knee jerk reaction was that he is a dick for that, because Euronymous WAS a killer Black Metal guitarist, but you know... Varg was like 19 and this 25 year old plots to kill him. I think he really did feel like it might be Euronymous or him. Would you trust a guy who hung out with Dead or took pics of his corpse and made necklaces and worships the devil. Varg's no gambling man I take it.
>>

>>
>>725105607
He was there in the early stages, but he wasn't especially gifted or anything. If we're just talking Norwegian stuff from around the same time; Burzum, Darkthrone and Satyricon were all doing a better job imo. They all struck me as people trying to actually create atmosphere and use passion; where Euronymous just struck me as a disgrunted, antisocial teen who wanted to be the alpha dog.
>>
>>725105677
Better to just not do it. Go there, enjoy the music and do not associate with the others.
>>
>>725105972
Oh yeah and needless to say that early Emperor shat all over Mayhem as well.
>>
>>725105972
As far as technical skill went, he wasn't going to wow anyone I guess. Him and Necrobutcher created some really catchy hooks with their riffing though imo. Also, even Fenriz credit Euronymous with inventing the Norwegian Black Metal style strum. So maybe more of an inventor or riff hook crafter than some watch me play this upside down type character.
>>
>>725105677
Yeah pretty much, so many put so much effort into trying to be as edgy as possible. It's almost hilarious, but more just sad than anything.

I also listen to a fair mount of Funeral Doom, but I find there are less bands that I really enjoy than there are with BM

For full disclosure they didn't actually have pizza; the cops just did that because of the nature of their music and because Australia is comically stupid nanny state almost as bad as Britain or Germany.
>I guess only weirdos, pervs, criminals and drug addicts would know about the most obscure shit anyway.
I disagree. Although metalheads on the internet tend to be cunts; nearly all of the metalheads I've met IRL are actually very social, very down to Earth people. In my experience and in contrast to popular opinion: They were also often more open minded than people who weren't. Especially in regard to musical tastes. Probably because they're already accutely aware that everything is subjective and some things aren't for everybody. I mean I'll bet you listen to a lot of stuff that isn't metal, don't you?
>That's why I find out a lot of stuff on /b/ I guess.
It's an incredibly popular board, with 24/7 traffic from different people from different walks of life from all over the globe. I'd say that plays a bigger role than anything else.

I wouldn't go so far as that. Imo it was their explicit lyrics (whic are unintelligible anyway) in tandem with a government and society that has yet to completely join the rest of the developed world. Don't get me wrong: I fucking love Australia for a bunch of other reasons; I really do. But sometimes we're treated so ridiculously that it just really frustrates me.
>All that kind of thing does is create more interest for the bands.
Exactly right with that one. I didn't know they existed until the cops kicked their door in. Not that they're famous or anything now; they aren't. But they did get at least one person interested enough to see what the fuss was about; most likely a lot more.

To be fair almost none of them are. Black metal is not exactly renowned for it's technical riffing and solos. It's not even really known for technical drumming; just fast.
Honestly I remember Necrobutcher's bass work from Deathcrush more than I remember Euronymous' guitars. Which is saying a bit since I normally have a pretty fucking big bias in favour of guitarists.
>So maybe more of an inventor or riff hook crafter than some watch me play this upside down type character.
Yeah true. That much I cannot argue with. Plus a lot of the... ugh... "truer" black metal musos seem to hate that more people pleasing side of metal. Although even then I think that's mostly an act to ironically get more fans and exposure.

I'm confident I would have found black metal sooner or later. I've been listening to different styles of metal since I was about 13-14 and I'm 30 now; so I figure it would have just crossed my path sooner or later. However, seeing a thing on TV talking about Varg killing Euronymous was my first introduction into the people behind it; which then got me looking into the music of the bands themselves.
>Dead hadn't shot his forehead off and then Euronymous took a pic of it
Do you believe that? Because I don't. Everytime I look at Dawn of the Black Hearts the picture looks like maybe it was an accurate, drawn recreation of a photo maybe. But the colours, the shapes, it all looks wrong to me. I thought it was fake.
>>
>>725108308
Necro's bass on Deathcrush and Mysteriis is maybe the main reason it is my favorite. I know Varg did the bass recording for Mysteriis, but I think Necro wrote it. Bass line on "Life Eternal" sticks in my brain as I go about my day.

>>
>>725108538
The colors do look super saturated, but if it's a drawing or recreation it is extremely good workmanship, which would be odd for a bootleg.

Varg killing Euro was one of the first things I learned about Mayhem. I went straight to the Burzum website and read Varg's version of the story. I just sat there until I read the whole thing, totally engrossed in the insane story.

Don't know man, I can't listen to it. Only prog rock I could ever listen to for any extended period was Rush 2112 and I never thought it was really that great. Guess it just comes down to taste. Prog to me = a bunch of math rhythms, with no hooks, good drumming, and singers that always sound weird and dorky as fuck.
>>
>>725108578
Mysteriis... That fucking mess. Even though it's regarded as a landmark blackmetal release; I just don't like it. I think Attila's vocals just ruin everything; which is a damn shame. Because if you listen to the work he did with Tormentor when he was still in Hungary, he clearly has a goog black metal voice; they just didn't seem to use it for some reason. Not to mention all the shit you mentioned about the bass tracks on there and then the crap involving Euronymous' mum and Hellhammer or whichever member it was.

That's weird, I love Attila's work on Mysteriis. He brings a variety in tone and sound that a lot of them don't. I guess you can talk to a million metal heads and get a different perspective from every single one. It's all subjective anyway.

Possibly; but you can pick any genre of music out there and it will have some surprisingly dedicated fans that will do all kinds of strange things and sink any amount of time they need or want to. A Slayer fan once tried to get Kerry King to carve his autograph into the fan's body with a scalpel. An intricate drawing of a dead hero isn't much of a stretch compared to something like that.

Well, fuck... Let's analyze it. It's an interesting pic to look at anyway.
>>
>>725109704
To be fair, I don't hate all of it. I just hate that it's nearly all that, "I'm not quite growling; not quite sneezing," style of vocals he did. Some parts of it I did like, like the slower part toward the latter half of Freezing Moon. I thought that complimented it really well, but using it all throughout just made it kind of lukewarm for me.
These black metal musos, especially the edgy, early days, second wave Norfags are always trying to convey aggressive hatred and despair through their music and to me that just fell short. Although it probably should also be stated that I'm not a black metal fanatic. I listen to other genres more.
>>
>>725108858
>I just sat there until I read the whole thing, totally engrossed in the insane story.
It's funny to read the perspective from Varg, Fenriz and a few other key figureheads from the scene at the time, watch the interviews, etc. Then watch tabloid-esque reports and features made on it years later and how different their information is from all of the people who were actually there at the time. Was a bit of an eye opener for me about what the media will do when it's a subject I already knew about.
>>

>>
>>725110716
There's nothing that really tells me for sure it's a fake, but I'd probably have to see the original photograph to really tell since digitized copied and re-copied images can lose their fidelity. The jacket looks strangely clean on the right of the photo, but the other part of the jacket under his right arm looks appropriately stained and dirty.
>>
>>725110458
Yeah, even the other black metal guys have differing stories. It reminds me of this old black and white Japanese movie about a murder where each character tells a different version of what happened. They even summon the spirit of the victim and the spirit tells a different story. So you could summon Euronymous and he would probably tell you some way different shit than Varg. We'll have to contact a medium because that would be interesting.

Happens to a lot of them. Glen Benton was notorious for being too serious about it all. I'm sure I saw an interview with Scott Ian where he said he and the boys were guilty of taking thrash really seriously when they were young, then just enjoyed the music as they got older.

Yeah, I think a lot of the young metal guys and punk guys especially think it is way more than just the music, like they have to be really extreme and edgy in real life and it's just young men trying hard to be men and be seen as men. It gets them killed sometimes. The way some guys talk on black metal video comments, you'd think you had to win the UFC championship before being real enough or tough enough to play metal. I'm like it's just music. Put a tough guy on there that can't play and what do you have? What's the point?

We have all kinds of good metal. Admittedly a lot of it is very generic (same as every other country), but we do have some pretty damn respectable acts in all kinds of styles. I remember seeing Psycroptic open for Cannibal Corpse at the Gaelic years ago and they did a slightly better job than Cannibal did; and Cannibal were the band I'd actually gone to see.
Same thing happened when I saw Slayer at the Hordern back around 06/08 in there somewhere. Slayer rocked the shit, nobody upstaged them; but the Aussie support - Mortal Sin did a fucking bang up job. You always hear these stories about opening acts for Slayer getting booed, Mortal Sin didn't. Probably because whoever booked the show at least picked a thrash metal band to open... Mastodon did get quite a lot of Slayer chants and other banter when they were on inbetween, though.

Anyway.
Boys I'm gonna have a shower and then make a run to the shops for dinner. Please keep the thread going if you can. If you can't, it's been great chatting to you guys and I'll see you the next time a decent metal thread is on.

Darkthrone is pretty good too, and they are still putting out some decent stuff. The reason I really like Scandinavian metal is because you can't hear the edgy lyrics. However, the only black metal release I really enjoyed since the 90's was SKÁPHE2.

The other types of metal I enjoy are folk metal from Finland, and doom/stoner/sludge metal. Moonsorrow continues to put out great album after great album.

>>

Yeah, I enjoyed his prison recordings. Some of it sounds like Silent Hill music, which are some games I really enjoyed... (the first 3 anyway)
>>
Really enjoy Panopticon and Liturgy, some new Black Metal release that add an American Folk and 'lightness' respectively. I encourage everyone to check them out
>>
Varg has a pretty sweet life
>make a couple classic albums
>burn down churches
>become eternally infamous in the black metal scene by killing euronymous
>went to somewhat cozy Norwegian jail
>has a cult following on YouTube, 6 kids, a wife
>does what he wants
>>
>>725115165
I can't imagine him being much of a Slayer fan if he spits on Tom though tbh. Also yeah decided fuck it I'll order pizza. Fuck walking down the shops.
>>
>>725115244
Really? I often thought black metal lacked that kind of punchy, bass and midrange, full-bodied sound that a lot of pump up music has. Still, if it works for you then more power to you.
>>
>>725117423
>>went to somewhat cozy Norwegian jail
Yeah, for something like 20+ years though. That said prisons in Scandinavia sound like a bit of a joke compared to everywhere else on Earth.
>>
>>725117423
15 years after a pre-meditated murder conviction. i know he says it wasn't pre-meditated, but they convicted him of murder and he got 15 years. LMAO Norway is some magical land of the easy life now in my mind. Dead was living on welfare pursuing a music career and wasn't happy. They should have shipped him to the USA so he could find out how shit life can actually be.
>>

I can't fathom why some fucktard would spit on the singer of a band he paid to go see. It's beyond me. BTW if you posted it or someone else, I'm laughing my ass off at the Sons of Northern Metal cartoon. Currently got to the part where Euronymous appeared all blue like Obi-Wan in the forest. The Varg part where they used his real blog audio and he was all crazy was gold.
>>
>>725118014
Immortal is not just any black metal though. It's super fast, high energy, face melting black metal.
>>
>>725118157
Sentenced to 21 maximum Norwegian sentence, but got out after 15 years on parole. And he recorded like three albums in jail. In the USA he'd be on death row or stuck in jail until an old man.
>>
>>725118721
The USA is probably better than other places, but you don't see me longing to die or whining about getting convicted for murder and only getting 15 years total served.

He has Heathen belief and faith, our ancestors didn't feel remorse for our fallen enemies and having no remorse doesn't make you cray or insane it's only a view of our faith or as most of you would say "religion" but it's not religion.

He is a man with opinions and a specific ideology that went to prison for protecting himself and not waiting for his enemy to strike him down first. Varg cares about the preservation of earth and nature as do I, the people who are "cray" are the supposed morally sound individuals that just consume and litter and fuck with the natural order of things all while judging somebody's moral compass
>>

I think that stuff has less to do with their country and more to do with them just being mental. Well maybe the 15 years thing, but regarding the stuff about Dead that guy was just a bit mental.
>>
>>725119303
I heard he had Cotard syndrome, which means he wasn't really sure if he was alive or dead to begin with. He thought he was already dead, because he died as a kid and they revived him. So he was all fucked up as to what life and death is and where he stood. Also heard he couldn't sleep, which would fuck with me royally. I turn into a demon without sleep.
>>

Varg is a little cray man. Nigga burnt down 8 churches because he felt like it, at one point placing a decapitated rabbit on the steps.

True, I don't know shit about J Metal, but I can't really take anything seriously that has someone who looks like a 13 year old girl shaking her ass like Jon Benay Ramsi to something that sounds like metal mixed with J-Pop. Seriously though, I want the J-Metal guy to stay and tell us about it or why he likes it, because I don't get it, so it's interesting to the thread.

Norwegian Black Metal makes me feel like I'm freezing to death in a Norwegian wood somewhere. I think that that is it's appeal, a very dark sound that can transport you to another world. But most bands today don't capture that.
>>

My rule of thumb is this: Blackmetal nerds are pretty much the weeaboos of metal:
>Thinks Odin is real/thinks ninjas are real
>Both pose with swords and silly costumes and take it too seriously
Blackmetal elitists on the other hand are the hipster faggots of metal:
>Only like obscure stuff
>Hate it when too many people are too similar to them
>Need to rebel; in a conformist kind of way

He had to be in solitary confinement and was subject to strip searches. He claimed this was inhumane. The courts ruled in his favor, and gave him $40,600 in Norwegian pesos along with an upgraded cell. He now has 3 personal cells, with his own computer, TV, and Playstation.
He has access to phone calls, a kitchen, a laundromat, and a gym.

>>725118721
USA jails are shitty compared to Europe's, but don't come close to third world prisons. That said, if USA prisons are medium mode, Norway's are the fucking tutorial. The whole country is really well off, with the highest HDI in the world.

>>725119714
Its weird how Varg is so varied. Like he has a loving wife and 6 kids, but he also committed some horrible crimes and doesn't even show remorse for them. He will be spot on with some of his observations, but then will spout some absolute nonsense. His wife made a video claiming the earth was expanding because plants are absorbing energy from the sun, and then dying, which gradually increases the mass of the earth.
>>
>>725120620
Thanks man.
>>
>>725120495
Somehow this is the stuff that makes Black Metal the best, like with Black Metal you are allowed to act out your cheesy warrior fantasies, the obscure factor gives honor to people without much means for expensive production and even praises it instead of marginalizing nobodies, and poor kids, they can actually make it if they're good and there can be a group of special people who know about something not everyone does.
>>725120734
He was a deranged child alright. Fit in with Euronymous in that sense although they didn't get along in the end I guess.
>>
>>725120779
Cray Varg and his cray wife. Maybe she's right lol. That is an extremely slow expansion. Does she do a lot of psychedelic drugs or something? If they are Asatru they probably do shrooms. Shrooms are like the peyote is to the Native American for the Norse Pagan.

Not him, but I doubt it. From what I read in the past it seems like Varg is quite against drug use. I doubt he'd marry a tripper. Unless she got all of her tripping done before she met him maybe.
>>
>>725122176
Which now that I think about it is kind of funny because ancient pagans used natural hallucinogens for religious rites.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Even if he is anti-drug, if he's Norse Pagan, alcohol and hallucinogenic mushrooms are kind of the holy sacrament for them.

I don't know but if I remember correctly she tried/is trying to disprove Einstein's theory of relativity.
Varg himself doesn't really talk about science, but states that he is very skeptical of modern science in general. His reasoning for this is fairly decent, that science is often used to push and agenda and that society's blind acceptance of science is problematic.

I'd have to say I agree with him about the whole science thing. It's sort of taboo to not accept anything the science world says, which I agree is problematic and problematic for scientists themselves who might be trying to disprove something using the scientific method, but it's not accepted for them to be doing that research politically.

I don't know, even in big cities in the USA there are probably like five to one hundred practitioners of Norse paganism. They just don't have a lot of sway in society because there are barely any of them. I researched it for college because I am Germanic mostly, but there was like one hall or whatever they call themselves in the greater metro area and outlying communities. they wouldn't even let me come check it out, because they're kind of protective of their obscure, outsider faith i guess.

I don't think so. That video was one of her worst offenders really. The film that she made, Forebears, is pretty beautiful in a way. It's more of a documentary of a simpler life than a film.

>>725123101
Yeah, it's a good mindset to have. So many companies use phrases such as "scientifically proven" in their marketing. Science has its problems, but it seems like Varg's dismissal of modern science is largely race based. From what I've read, varg kinda has a hate boner for Albert Einstein because he's Jewish. Honestly him and his wife aren't dumb at all, it's just that accepting Einstein as a great scientist doesn't fit with their belief system.

Jewish doesn't mean bad or wrong, but I can understand his mistrust of the Jews... The Federal Reserve that prints our money in the USA is a ring of banks run by Jews. Zionism is outside our interests but we are always used for it militarily and financially, because Jews basically own this country. That doesn't mean some Jewish scientist must be wrong though.

Pretty much that. They and a Swiss group named Celtic Frost were very influential on a lot of bands that came up through the late 80s and early 90s. So everything from guys like Darkthrone to stuff that sometimes gets criticised for being less genuine like Dark Funeral and Marduk were all getting a lot of their ideas and inspiration from the same shit.
