I've heard there are many variations of the sks from different countries. Do your research and don't go tomorrow with your mind set on buying a gun. If the sks seems like a lemon you can wait, there are plenty of em.

WASR10 does everything an SKS does but better while not being a nigger when trying to use detachable mags for only $150 more

Don't pay more than 400, make sure the rifling is fine, and for private transfers no paperwork is required.

From personal experience no sks is better than an ak so if you're spending the same for either, go for an ak

On the rear dust cover there's a lever on the right side that you pull up to 90 degrees to release it and remove the cover/bolt assembly to check the rifling

Appareltly the good ones are the RUssian, Czech, and the Chinese made ones. Don't quote me on that though, it's been a while since I looked into them.

I've got a Chinese one back home, all stock parts. Shoots pretty good, no issues from it. It shoots the old Soviet ammo in the giant sardine can pretty good, but I haven't had an issue using cheap Wolf steel case ammo besides one dead round every few boxes or so.

Just don't buy a rail upper cover, the one I got liked to fall off while you were shooting. Went back to stock iron sights and no issues again.

I was thinking about getting an M1 garand through the CMP... Should I? (It's one of my favorit e guns)

Century is the only importer that brings in WASR's. There are some kit builds floating around on US made receivers, but for a WASR that was made in the Cugir factory, it was imported by Century.
And I'd take a Cugir WASR over a US kit build any day of the week.

SKS is a solid option if you want something military with a traditional stock. Yogo mausers are also fun, you can them pretty cheap.

Build an AR instead, I payed $470 for everything in the picture minus the optic.
I'm sure you're gonna be paying something close to that anyway, and you'll end up with a far superior gun in every way (caliber is all personal preference, shot placement is king, don't start a caliber war, they'll all kill you just as dead).

I'll agree with a lot of people than an AK is a better choice. But price is important. A 350$ SKS that's still in good shape will run better than any 500$ AK out there. If you want to spend 650-1k$, grab you a good AK or AR.

A good AR can do most of that stuff just fine, and you can play mix and match with the uppers to play around with different ammo if you want.

My first gun was a S&W 22A, a 22LR semi auto pistol. Cheap ammo, fun to shoot, fun to clean. After that I bought a S&W .357 revolver.

Why an SKS right off the bat?

Building an AR clone is easy and fun. Requires a couple specialized tools.

Top of my wish list is a S&W 617, a 10-round 22LR revolver.
