My ISP is fucking me over somehow.

They raised my prices gradually so I rang them up and told them its not acceptable etc so they said they'd lower them for a year with no changes to my services apart from a TV bonus I used to get being cancelled.

Now ever since my broadband has been fucking weird. The speed is fine and I did test it on speedtest, but most websites just take ages to load now, like a minute. And sometimes the request will just time out.
If I launch a game it runs ok, but if i try refresh a server list for example that just times out and comes back with couldnt find anything.

I need to know what it is they're doing so I can call them and say "stop doing this, I know you're doing it to keep making a profit on me"

If I say its the speed they'll just go oh well the speed looks fine to me sir, which it is.

Even the captcha verification is timing out cause it cant load it since its an external section of the page...

Oh look something I can help with

Sounds like DNS issues to me anon. Could be your modem, could be your PC, could be both.

Do you have the same issues when you're connected to wifi with say, your phone?
>>
>>725015471

You've got a fault on the line you pleb. Phone up, tell them that the line is noisy, keeps crackling and that you insist on an engineer.
Your speeds will be lower but you'll be getting an assload of packet loss. This is what causes the hang times and bad latency.

This would be my second check after DNS. Do you know what kind of router you have?
>>
>>725014410
Have you tried a different DNS server?
Sometimes it can make a significant difference on URL resolution time.
Try switching your primary DNS to 8.8.8.8 (Google's DNS) or look up the IP for OpenDNS - it is also a popular alternative.

You're right, except that's what the general population are for who just sit on their phones on facebook and watch netflix and pretty much use the internet for that only.
Usually if you can prove to them that you're not an idiot and you know they can up the bandwidth with little to no loss on their end they'll do it to keep you from leaving them as a customer. I need to know what it is they're doing exactly so I can make that threat to them. If I say "My internet is slower since I got the lower priced deal and I know it's being done on purpose as its this this and this that you're doing. Stop it, or i'm joining another company."

Bypass splitters, change dns, factset modem/router, call isp.

Thanks for the help, i'll look into the DNS.

>>725016637
Changing your DNS should be step #1. If that doesn't work do a factory reset of your modem like the other anon said.. if that doesn't work either the modem or your PC is busted.

If you get the same issues with your phone it's your modem. If you don't, it's your PC.

Good luck homie

OP here.

I'll admit I don't really know much about DNS, what it is and how to fix it.

Should I /flushdns in command prompt? What does this do and do I need to do anything before I do it?

And I one day hoped to be an IT technician... jesus christ.

Also feel free to educate me on what the DNS is, I'd genuinely like to be educated.

More tits as my thanks for helping.

To understand DNS, first you need to understand something else about the internet.. the actual address of websites you visit are technically IPs. Facebook has an IP, google has an IP, etc. What a DNS server does is basically tell your web browser to associate facebook.com with facebook's IP address. It also stores this data so next time you type in facebook.com it can take you to the website faster (i.e. without looking up the associated IP).

Sometimes the cache that's created becomes corrupted, so "flushing" the DNS clears the cache.

There are different DNS servers though and what we're all getting at is the one you're connecting to is probably corrupted.
>>
>>725017772

That explains it perfectly, thank you based anon.

So DNS just links the IP of a site to the domain so it knows where to connect to. And a DNS server is what my computer connects along the path.

So where's the cache that could be corrupted, on my PC or on the server im connected to?
>>
>>725018252
Yeah exactly! And glad I could help dude. The cache is on your computer and can become corrupted.. but the DNS server you're connecting to can also be corrupted. That's why flushing the cache on your PC is the first step, and changing your DNS server is the second.

>>
>>725018557
Cool, thanks man.

Flushed DNS and restarted PC, seems the issues are still there but not quite as bad.

So I guess changing DNS is what's needed? Is that a big deal? I've never done it before.

Earlier someone asked what kinda router I have, it's just the standard one my ISP gave me I never bothered to by a third party one or whatever. It's about 4 years old.
>>
>>725018914
Tim Berners Lee created websites and he's a brit.

Americans may have made the internet, but a brit made it possible for a pleb like you to be able to use it for shitposting and watching hentai.
>>
>>725018252
If changing the DNS doesn't help, open up command prompt and type 'ping facebook.com -t' no quotes and let it run for a few minutes. It'll give you an idea on wether or not you're dropping packets whicg would imply a more serious problem
>>
>>725019347

Just did this, it did 5x request timed out's, then got a reply, did another 4 or so request timed out then got another reply and after that constant timed out every try.
>>
>>725019585
That sounds incredibly fucked. For reference my good connection hasn't timed out once after running for 10 minutes. Are you on wifi or ethernet?
>>
>>725019860
mine timed out for 17 times and i have no connection problems
>>
>>725019585
This sounds like a really faulty line. Does it happen on other devices?
>>
>>725020302
You most certainly have connection problems if it timed out 17 times
>>
>>725019187
Nah, there's nothing you can do that will jack things up. You can always switch back to your ISP's DNS. Write the original DNS address down though in case you need to switch it back, a lot of the time this is out T1 tech support's scope of support and you don't want to have to deal with escalations to higher tiers (you'll be on the phone for fucking ever)

>>725019585
The packet loss could be caused by the DNS errors (your modem), but it could also be a physical component, such as damaged cabling (your ethernet cable or your ISP's cabling in your neighborhood)
>>
>>725019860
Using wifi through a power line adapter. Basically a ethernet cable plugged into a thing you plug into the mains power sockets on the wall that allows you to connect to the router via wifi.
>>
>>725014410
Sounds more like youre loaded to the tits with spyware and add ons.

Your speed is your speed and if your tests are fine im going with spyware cookies or youre visiting high traffic websites, or its even possible youre over perceiving it because you have a vendetta.

If it were spyware it would be hogging bandwidth (speed tests would show this), not creating timeouts

You have no idea what you're talking about.
>>
>>725020380
Oops. I meant it could be DNS errors (the DNS server)*
>>
>>725020448
Well no wonder you're dropping packets. But if it was working well enough before then something has changed.

My first thoughts are:
1) The wifi frequency has become busy. You can download an app on your phone to show you what's on each frequency, or just change to a different one on your router and see if it helps.
2) Something with your setup has gone wrong. I'm not entirely sure what's going on but it sounds like there are a number of things that could go wrong from adapters dieing to (maybe) changes in the building's wiring. Your best bet would be to connect to your router directly via ethernet and seeing if it still acts up.

>alternative DNS
>>725015730

probably. remember it could also be a browser addon like https everywhere just being slow or having a conflict with another addon

has happened before, also look into IPv6 (ie disable it)
>>
>>725021019
So tell me man, how often is wifi frequency actually the problem? I did tech support for AT&T and they always had us tell customers to switch their's to 9 (3 is the most common if I remember correctly) but I always felt like it was just tech jargon to get customers feeling like we're doing more than we actually are.
>>
>>725021296
I my experience, it's rarely the wifi frequency. More likely might be a hardware issue, i.e. your modem dying. It shouldn't with just 4 years, but I had the exact same problems that you're reporting just last week. Contacted my ISP, they did some diagnostics and told me they couldn't find anything. Then I did some tests on my modem - every time I rebooted it, the internet worked fine for exactly 4 minutes, then stalled. Switched the modem out for a new one, no problem with the connection since.
>>
>>725021296
From my experience it can help quite a bit. When I moved to the city my default channel was completely jammed but switching to the highest frequency my router could do cut the packetloss down to almost nothing.

I think that might be an unlikely case though. I suppose it really depends on the disparity of noise on each frequency and the distance between the frequencies.

I'm not OP, I'm the guy tryna help him (>>725017772). But yeah the packet loss makes me think either his modem is dying or his neighborhood's cabling is fucked up. I think he'll end up having to talk to Pajeet regardless here, unless switching his DNS fixes everything

OP here, I definitely remember an email from my ISP saying they were going to be carrying out work on something in march but I can't find it but im sure it should be over by now. Everyone has already advised but it will be a DNS issue, if not plug into the testing socket and try again and if all else fails get some wireshark packet captures and send them to your ISP. I work for another UK based ISP so this will more than likely be it. If not contact Pajeet and ask them to check the SNR of your line (if it's above 15 loop loss it should be at least 6) if there are errors on your line insist that they up it to 9.
