In the United States we had the prohibition. Alcohol was banned, and restaurants had to either fire employees or pay them less. The concept of "tipping" only existed in the US because of the Great Depression. No one could afford anything, but restaurant businesses still wanted to remain open and operate. In order to do that, tipping was a suggestion made by the operators in order to help keep the restaurant you enjoyed from closing down.

Essentially, you were making sure that your one escape from the hell that was the Great Depression remained an escape by assisting them during a financial crisis, no different from a donation. Trouble is, once the Depression ended people were accustomed to the practice of tipping and now businesses could get away with paying their employees less under the assumption that people tip.

Tipping exists because you let it continue to exist after it served its purpose. You buy into the image of the "can't make ends meet" waitress and you let them fleece you of money they don't need so they can turn a higher profit at the end of the year by avoiding to pay their employee's a living wage.

i just consider tipping to be buying a service in exchange for me to continue being lazy. i pay a delivery boy to bring me the food i'm too lazy to go get myself. i pay a bartender to make me a drink i'm too lazy to mix myself alone in my room. i pay a waiter to bring me food so i don't have to make anything myself and keep my drink filled without question. whatever the case may be. being lazy costs more money than doing things yourself, but i work hard and sometimes i'd rather use the money i make to buy myself a little bit of well earned laziness.
