There's only 1 way to verify the authenticity of a coin, and that's with a certificate of authenticity from a licensed inspector.

I would do it exactly like OP is saying to do it except I would lower the price to $500 dollars or make the apparent value greater than 10k to make people feel like if they say something he'll want the coins inspected (raising the price closer to their imagined estimate). When they can only double their money, people will be more wary of getting ripped off. If they think they can more than quadruple it, they get wrapped up in how much money they'll make to want to ruin it.
