Firstly it's not harmful if it's done with clean, tank-water covered hands. Most breeders pick their fish up to move them from tank to tank because it's more stressful on a fancy to be netted.

Secondly I'm not OP, I've only ever lost 1 goldfish who was a decade old, a rescue and I never touched her.
