Let's talk monitors
Any recommendations?
Not looking for something too big or expensive (portability and power would be nice)

>>723756845
I was thinking something like pic related but not trying to spend more than $200
Get some HS7/8s. Never liked KRKs.
I got jbl for mixing
pretty flat and honest
For monitors based on my experiences Mackie MR5's are a lot better than KRK Rokits.
KRK can cause ear fatigue because with the treble full they are very harsh, but you need it on because they sound a bit muddy without it...
>>723757547
+1 on HS7s
>>723757172
If you're not spending more than 200 on a pair of speakers, you're getting poop (mostly). That being said, I'm a professional audio engineer and I use pic related. Presonus sceptre s6. They're coaxial, meaning the tweeter is mounted in the middle of the woofer so all the sound originates from the same point.
Some cheaper ones that are the same technology are the equator D5's and I've heard great things.
Other options with decent clarity are the Yamaha hs5's, but they're a little harsh on the upper end. KRK's have a recessed midrange and excess bass that you don't need because you should be running monitors with a sub if you want true representation. Even if you don't have the money for a sub right now, you should account for it later.

Yamahas seem to be the most common in this thread, so I'll look into those
What do you do out of curiosity? Now that I'm out of uni I want to start music production as a hobby
Neumann KH310 is the only choice
Excuse me those are speakers sir.

Focal! Fuck Presonus, Yamaha sucks now, Rokit is for shittt mumble rappers that want a demo on SoundCloud. Get something by focal. Shop around. Fiscal has 100% true monitoring. What you get in your mixdown, is what you'll get in your speakers. If anyone says "Trust me I'm an engineer". That means they run sound at a gay bar. Go With Focal!
>>723761768
No. This is a speaker

Yeah Genelecs are damn fine, but I've been mixing on Neumanns for a while and I would never go back.
OP you gotta drop some coin or else all you're getting is a monitor-shaped child's toy.
How addicting is audio stuff huh?
It started with me buying a simple mixer, then getting a launchpad to facilitate production, a midi keyboard to learn to jam, nice speakers and headphones and a mic, and now you guys are showing me all this nice shit.
I think I might buy something now to add to my home studio that has been birthed this year

Damn /b/ros....I don't have enough dough for this lifestyle
>>723760592
I do a lot of things. I write/engineer for companies like shutterstock, produce music for bands/solo artists, engineer, mix and master, as well as put out my own music. I also used to play in a band that was a little popular and we did some big festivals.
>>723762182
I don't do live sound because it sucks ass, and I don't see how it'd be any different if I did it at a gay bar. I agree presonus is usually shit but the sceptres were created by the guy that created EAW speakers which are the fucking bomb besides Meyer sound for live audio. Also, I love focal too, so not a bad option if you can get them. The alpha 65's are great.
If you're just doing it as a hobby, you can get whatever speakers you like the best. The reality is that you can use literally anything to mix on if you know it well enough to mix it so that it will sound good on other systems as well.
>>723763139
Being in audio is the most expensive thing ever. I have about 25,000 into my studio now.
I've heard that the jbl lsr305 is good if you're on a budget
>>723763362
The frustration of listening to a mix on your studio mons, and loving it. Only to find that your mixdown sounds totally different in your car, or on earbuds. True monitoring really takes that away. Hence focal. EAW is badass too. Love their JF-80 stage mons.
>>723763502
Holy fuck dude.
>>723764305
Well, I do this shit for real, so fuck ya pussies.
Monoprice has nice ones with 8" sub's for 170 a pair and they are solid. But you might be better off with a subwoffer and a pair of 3" monitors if you don't have the space or need to the bass response.
>>723764254
They're do sounds good... Until you hear actually good stuff.
>>723759655
What kind of education do I need to become an audio engineer?
>>723764290
Using focals doesn't fix that. The only thing that fixes that is actually checking your mix over and over again on those different sources and making it so it sounds good on everything. Mixing is just compromising over and over.
>>723764793
Audio engineering degree
For portable applications might I recommend fostex headphones? It's unreasonable to haul around desktop audio monitors. Get a headphone amp with 2 or 3 TRS outs and a decent portable DAC. I like Wolfson ones in particular. I have no idea why but they sound cleaner to me.
>>723764940
Already looked and no universities around me have that sort of degree
I'd have to go to a private school for that kind of thing, fuck that
>>723765259
When I say "universities around me" I mean the whole country btw
>>723759952
second and third these
>>723765324
So not usa then?
I'm an electrical engineering and always regretted not having done audio. My best friend did and for his first internship, he got a gig travelling around with the red hot chili peppers and setting up their shows.
Fucking so jealous.
Got your 6 bro, top of the line shit right here
>>723756388
got myself JBL LSR 305 two weeks ago and so far very CRISP sound and boomy if i want them to be with EQ, sub is fantastic even without 2.1 subwoofer setup, just the monitors by themselves. would recommend also very cheap considering they are ACTIVE (built in amplifier in the back)
>>723764793
Well, I've personally been grinding away at it on my own for years. I started playing music at 10 and then started recording on an 8 track recorder when I was about 13 or 14. Then I kept learning more about computers, etc. and just kept moving on and learning. Eventually I got really good and then at 19 I got an internship at a recording studio, then got hired there 6 months later and stayed for a year. Then I left and started my own business because I didn't like it.
Basically what I'm saying is that you don't need school if you're already smart and you have the drive to learn yourself. I think the only place that you can go to get ahead is berklee. You won't necessarily get better by going there but the connections are what you're paying for.
>>723765678
Btw forgot to mention I'm 22 now.
>>723765976
Not in school?
You'd love djing house parties if you've never
Yorkville YSM5's, highly underrated, if you can get them.
>>723757547
I second this I'm shit poor and got the hs5
>>723767259
Nah, school is retarded for anything art related. Even if it is audio engineering. It's only good for shit you can only learn from a teacher. I run a business, I'm starting a second, and I only have a high school degree. Just depends on what kind of person you are.
I DJ my friends parties for fun, and I like it. My Traktor S4 broke so it's tougher to do now that I use an iPad
>>723764254
JBL is owned by the same people as akg, but it's their lesser stuff. Akg mics and headphones are great but don't buy into the JBL hype
>>723767905
I'm pretty sure jbl's subwoofer nice tho https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/LSR310S
Been considering getting something pic related as I've played piano my whole life but don't have a keyboard right now
Should I just get a midi keyboard? Feel like I'd be the smarter thing to do, as you can do so much more
And it could always just be a set of keys
>>723768231
I've heard terrible things about the code. I have a kontrol s61. I like it.

Cool. This thread just made me discovered at home audio hobby. I'm going to start with the keyboard and speakers
So. another question: a keyboard can literally be mapped to do this function also?
>>723767750
Kek nice bro. GL with the businesses
>>723768973
With the right drivers yes but that all depends on the software and DAW
WTF? IS THIS A SPEAKERS OR MONITORS THREAD?

I would save up and get a proper electric piano. They have decent weighted keys. These USB MIDI controllers have no feedback. You can get a great keyboard from Yamaha (DGX-660) that has all kinds of inbuilt instruments including a pretty realistic piano and a USB out for working on a computer etc plus the keys are fully weighted. A piano player will appreciate it more than a bog standard controller.
Build yourself a pair of Paul Carmody's fucking hitmakers, you filthy piece of shit.
