It's all about traffic. There were fewer people on the site which meant that threads lived longer and moved slower. It was still fast enough that it was kind of frenetic and wild on boards like /b/, but slow enough that it actually felt like a conversation. In this atmosphere you had certain types of personalities arise in certain types of threads, and actually got a feel for "board culture" over time. Memes were actually cool and fun, because everyone making or using them felt like it was part of a trend, not just tossing some bullshit into the ether and hoping it gets copypasted a brazilian times. It's painfully hip to say something is cooler or more fun when fewer people are into it, but in terms of 4chan, the way the site is set up is actually optimized at a certain rate of traffic. No way around it.

There weren't constant trap threads. That's really the only difference.

The difference was the way "anonymous" Interacted with eachother within these threads. Cynicism and sarcasm was evident throughout each thread, and not in the 'lulz' kind of way. It was actual very clever and intelligent the way anons interacted with eachother, through stories turned on their head, racism, sarcasm, and the pictures they used to depict such interactions. It was a very entertaining and interesting community.
