It's not that hard to "use" just don't be stupid, keep the edge aligned with your target, and step and rotate with the swing. Cutting shit like bottles is pretty fun and easy with a little practice... as for like HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts), No I've not done any training, I plan on trying it at some point.

Looks fine. Valiant Rhinelander, Hand hammer forged diamond cross-section carbon steel blade, Sharpened,
Macassar ebony wood handle, Solid steel wheel pommel
S-curve steel guard
Fully functional
Long blade with great balance
Blade: 37"
Handle: 7 1/2"
Overall: 45"
Weight: 4 Lbs 12 Oz
Cross guard: 9"
Has a rat-tail tang, but almost everything does these days. Don't go slamming it into trees or anything, and enjoy. A man should own a sword.

Those are pretty shitty and I'm gonna be honest, I don't like the crossguard or the hilt of the one in your OP either.

I think your knowledge has grown and from what I'm reading, the Rhinelander fits fairly typically within historical specifications and the oakeshott XIIa is a tasteful choice...

that been said, it's a huge fucking waste of money and I think it's ugly. that's just me, though.

You could do better for $700, or have put it towards splitting the difference between something better you'll want down the line.

I can't see you justifying that purchase to yourself five years from now, but if you think I'm wrong, then I'm happy for you.

The Pentii's are nice. I have a VB that's held up pretty well that I've been using. I had a feder, but I actually broke the tip off....

My friend's all have nice sharps, so I just borrow theirs if we're cutting anything. I don't feel like dropping that much money on blades. HEMA gear adds up enough, so I just stick with what I need really. If you do get into it, I suggest getting your own gambeson (the jacket), and maybe a mask. It's fucking gross when you share one with someone that's been sweating like a beast.

Well I bought that Hanwei Katana 7 years ago now, and I'm still happy with it. I'm well aware those machetes aren't swords, hence why I call them swordchetes. I like them a lot because I actually use them for yard work and brush clearing, and I can do stupid stuff with them that I would not do with a real sword.

I think this was a good start into European swords for me... Yeah I could have saved up a bit longer and got a Albion, but I don't feel like waiting 9 months (I could hardly wait the 9 1/2 weeks for this), and I wanted a sheath, but not to pay $400+ for one. If I ever get an Albion, which I may, I'm just going to store them in a Pelican Rifle case. Like I do my knives (pic related)

I got very lucky buying my Atrim when I did. His prices and available work will probably never come close to what they were.

Yeah that's pretty much my plan, I have a fencing mask that fits me from when I did fencing years ago, but unfortunately it's foil, so it's not going to give me the protection I need for HEMA. And I have been looking around at gambesons, you have any brands you recommend?

I'm in to sharp blades. I love cutting. I got into swords because of my knife hobby, and I pay for all of it with knife sharpening.

OP, you're a total faggot.

First of all, ignoring the fact that you're a fat fuck who can't possibly swordfight worth shit... your bullshit little "I spent over $700 on a sword" post is meaningless to a true collector.

You wanna drop numbers? My oakshot XII, historically accurate 12th century european single handed long sword (The kind used by the Priest in I.33 (If you don't know what that is, fucking kill yourself)) is not some piece of shit Albion... it was forged by a man considered a master swordsmith for more than 30 years (Not 30 years of smithing, 30 years of being a master smith)

That ONE BLADE set me back $1,300 and it didn't even come with a scabbard.

WORTH. EVERY. PENNY.

I don't practice in the HEMA leagues, but I do practice. Most of my fighting friends are ACL (Armoured combat league) but I mess around for fun in the SCA.

I bet the balance is shit, the blade moves like crap, and 10 to 1 says I could take it from you bare handed.

I have a SPES jacket, but be forewarned they're pricey. It's good protection, but it's heavy and cuts down on mobility a bit. It's a tradeoff: lighter equals faster but gives up extra protection, and vice versa.

Honestly, best bet would be to talk to the HEMA guys, or go on a HEMA forum. Sometimes HEMA groups can do a bulk order and you can get it cheaper.

The hardest thing to find are gloves. Steel rated gloves are $200+, but if you want some cheap ones if you're not going full force, full speed, Lacross gloves are the go to. Just buy a cheap pair from Play It Again Sports or somewhere.

>>
>>723401975

I recognize that sword. It's an Atrim from back when Tom K. was selling them through Tried & True Armory.

Excellent piece, but that was back when they were going for well under $1,000, let alone $1,300.

Also, if that even is yours, you should clean the rust off the blade before talking shit.

I live around Cherry Hill Nj. The closest group I've found meats in the town of Maple Shade, it's no more than a 20 or so minute drive for me.

>>723401975
Hate to break your bubble, but this is something that any half way decent $300 sword should get right... And Obviously a $1,300 sword is going to be better at it than my $700 one... But non the less, the point of harmonics of my sword are very good, the first node is right at the bottom of the cross guard and the second node is about 3/4ths of the way up the blade, which is right around the center of percussion for this sword, with a balance point of 4.75" from the guard.. this is a very well balanced and tuned sword.
>>
>>723402652
kek, hitting down the trolls with logic.
>>
>>723402611

No. Longsword, in reference to European swords, only talks about two-handed swords used in longsword manuals like Lichtenauer and Fiore.

The use of "longsword" in reference to a single handed European sword is mostly used in video games and fantasy, and is not a real thing to anyone worth their salt in the hobby. The correct term you are looking for is "arming sword."
>>
>>723402652
There is no rust on the blade. The blade is so polished, it's reflecting the brown colour of the boxes surrounding it.

It's not an Atrim, nor is it from Tom K. Looks similar... but the difference is in the quality.

Yes it is going to hang on my wall, but I will do some basic backyard cutting, watter bottles and stuff, maybe some Tatami mats this summer. But I could do all of that just as well with far less expensive blades. I actually was kind of debating if I wanted a gun for the $700... But I have a good enough home defense gun, and I'm not planning to get into guns as a hobby just yet... for the sake of my wallet.

>>723402909
I second this, there are "long" arming swords, but they are still arming swords. Really, at lest in the common use of the terms among most sword enthusiasts it goes, Arming Sword, Hand&Half/Bastard, Longsword, then the two handed great swords.

>>
>>723402909
Well, it depends on the particular terminology you're referencing... but I'll take your point and admit I'm incorrect.

However, my understanding was that swords such as the gladius or others which are clearly longer than a knife/dagger but don't touch the ground are considered short swords... while swords which can not freely swing as they touch the ground were considered long swords.

However, it seems the current nomenclature agrees with you in that the modern convention of "long sword" refers to the "long handle" rather than length of the blade.

Tip of the hat.

Oh yeah?
I dropped five grand on a historically accurate longsword. Not to have it forged, but to have it recovered.
It was lodged in a fucking rock, m'kay? I paid five thousand US dollars to excavate it from the rock, and it was worth every god damn shekel. Upon studying it, I've found that it was made with European steel, which was the highest quality steel in the ancient world. Not only was it European, but it was made with Japanese techniques.
That's right.
That mother fucker was folded over seventeen thousand times, which means it's basically unbreakable.
On top of that, the carbon in the blade was super heated and put under pressure that shouldn't have been achievable back then, which means it basically has diamonds in the blade, making it even harder to break.
It also has symbols engraved on the scabbard, blade and pommel. Since I frequent /x/, I know that the symbols are binding runes, which means there might be a demon trapped in my blade.
I've paid thousands upon thousands of dollars to be privately trained in the use of this sword, so I'm like mother fucking John Wick but with a sword.
I've taken the liberty of naming the sword Brisingr until I can learn its real name.
GET ON MY FUCKING LEVEL YOU ABSOLUTE COCK MUNCHING FAGGOT

I said knife or two because I made one and helped my cousin make two.

The long, silver blade, wood handles, brass pins, knife on the left, mid way up, that is the knife I made. It's just out of mild steel, I did case harden it, but have since reground it which negated the hardening.

I have a bunch of 1095 laying around that I have yet to do anything with.
>>
>>723403874Psst you know today even with modern presses and foundries that steel can't be folded more than 500 times. In fact htere is no need to fold it more than 20 times as that is the best it will get. The reason for folding is to remove carbon as carbon makes a blade brittle. So maybe you should get your metallurgy down before you spout shit you have no clue of.

It's not tarnished, the fuller is blackened.

Seriously though, kudos on getting me to keep responding.

Honestly, I've forgotten the name of the swordsmith... so I can neither confirm nor deny your claim as to the craftsman's "signature" work.

However, having been a collector for more than 25 years... having practiced for hours per week for more than 25 years... having evaluated more swords than I can easily count... this one is phenomenal.

Are there better out there? Most likely.

Is OP's $700 blade one of them? No.

But kudo's on him for following his hobby... and most definitely a tip of the hat for paying for it all through knife sharpening.

Depending on where OP lives, I'd help him learn how to fight with it.

the folding doesn't remove carbon, it distributes the high carbon steel and low carbon iron (technically any carbon in iron makes it steel but let's focus here) so that there is high carbon to hold an edge, and low carbon to flex so the blade doesn't shatter.

In the Japanese blades, they made a sandwich of high carbon exterior with low carbon interior to give the blade a hardness that would hold an edge while leaving it flexible to survive strikes.

In reality, the secret to the japanese katana is the polish. The better the polish, the lower the friction, and the easier it slips through.

Modern steels and alloys are stronger, but the cutting awesomeness comes from the polish.

Sorry for flipping out like that OP... been a rough patch for me for a while. I'm glad you enjoy your weapon.

Serious question, how well does the blade repost? (Return after a strike)

Do you know how to strike without swinging through your target? (so the blade strikes a position of your choice, stops on it's own without hitting a target, and then returns)

Do you have good endurance, or is that something you need to focus on in addition to just weight loss?
>>
>>723404368

Fuller on my Atrim is blackened, looks nothing like your pic. And I'm referencing the other side of the blade, not the fuller. It is very clearly tarnished.

You aren't much of a collector if you don't know the name Sonny Suttles has made for himself after buying Valiant Armory. His new pieces aren't Atrim or Albion quality, but they are phenomenal pieces for the money. His scabbard work alone could sell for the price he asks for the sword/scabbard combo.

You're so hung up on price, and you clearly demonstrate that you don't have the knowledge about the hobby that you claim.

Well first off... it's dark out so I could not even if I wanted to. I could post a pic of it slicing through printer paper, but pretty much a butter knife can do that if you are good at it... It's not phone book paper sharp... But you can just look up Valiant Armoury and see that they normally come functionally sharp... that being said I rather it be sharper, and I am going to touch it up at lest on a strop, if not remove the "v" bevel and convex it the way most historical swords were.

>>723405299
Like I said before, it's balance point (via my own measurements) is 4.75" from the guard, and the via my measurements it's under 3lb... for a XIIa, this is a light and hilt balanced sword, there are a lot of historical XIIa that handle heavier than this. And no thanks... I rather stick with HEMA instructors who have proven credentials. More so not really taking up the martial arts atm, right now I'm more of a collector/likes having swords/ has fun cutting shit.

Say you happen have any experience/much knowledge on Lockwood. They look pretty nice, and are about Albion price but with a scabbard, also they are made via stock removal like Albion does.

I'm thinking my next Euro sword (maybe a few years) maybe a Lockwood, or an Albion. If it's an Albion, I'm not bothering with a sheath, just going to keep it in a Pelican rifle case.

Pic related is a sword I really hope I can get one day before they no longer make them, or maybe second hand. The Albion Doge.

Credentials... I love it. Reminds me of belts in martial arts...

I knew a guy who refused to wear anything but a white belt... never joined a dojo... never took tests. Still beat just about everyone he faced.

I once squared off against a Kenjutsu instructor with a school of about 8 to 10 students... beat him so badly he didn't even realize he'd lost. I had blocked his shot, reposted to his head, then reset to my initial stance, in the time it took him to keep trying to force his shot and connect.

Then he tried to explain how he beat me.

But this is futile. HEMA has it's intrigue, just like Kendo and Kenjutsu and Fencing... but it's not really fighting.

It's probably a good place for you to start.

Close, but other way around. The core steel in the middle is the hard part, not the sides. The most typical construction is called sanmai, where only 3 layers are used, the middle layer is also the layer that ends up as the edge, which is why it needs to be the one with the high carbon content.

Again... it's possible. Story goes like this:

I asked for a 12th century sword, something out of I.33... preferably in the $300 range (didn't have a lot of money... just wanted something to wear around for my hobby [SCA])

Guy says I won't be happy with anything in that price range, but obliges me. He's right... I ask him what he would recommend... he gives me some options in the $700 range. I like some of them, but they just don't feel right.

Then he hands me the one I wound up buying. Didn't tell me how much it was, just said "This is probably what you're looking for if you can tell the difference."

When I found out the price, I put it down and left. I wasn't about to spend that kind of money.

But, my dad had just died a few days earlier... so I decided I would get it as a family heirloom.

Some of the dust/tarnish you notice are my father's ashes.

Did I overpay? Probably... because I got it through a middle man.

Is it a gus trim? I honestly couldn't remember the name, but I suppose I could ask the next time I see the vendor.

What I do remember is, the swordsmith never makes scabbards, because he considers his leatherwork shit... so rather than charge extra for something he's not proud of... he just sells the blade for less and suggests you get a custom sheath, rather than charging you materials plus his crap workmanship. His time is better vested in making the blades than fucking around with leatherwork... so why charge people for it.

Oh no, be careful of Darksword armory, I once considered them, but I've heard a lot of sketchy things about them. I'm going to try out their Danish dagger (pic related) some day, just to test the waters with them, but also because if I get a sharp medieval dagger, it's really just for the sake of owning it, and I'm probably never going to even remotely use it, so it does not have to be supper functional. And for $150 at lest the fit&finish is very good.

>>723407966

Yeah I'm thinking of getting a bigger rifle case just to make transporting my Katana and Rhinelander easier, I guess I could just get a Sword bag, many brands make them... but I like Pelican a lot, I have a 1500 for all my folding knives (you've probably noticed the pics) and I'm about to get a 1600 for some of my knife sharpening equipment.
>>
>>723408223
>Is it a gus trim?

Yup. Consider it a good thing. Gus's work is some of the (if not THE) most highly regarded with regards to performance in the industry. You probably overpaid considering what they were going for at the time, but that's about what his pieces go for now, so it's about what the sword's real value should have been.

> the swordsmith never makes scabbards, because he considers his leatherwork shit

Yeah, that's Gus. That's one of the reasons Tom K was able to partner with him. Tom's leatherwork was pretty good, so he got the swords from Gus, made a new grip for them, and sold them.

First, I checked em.

Well I agree that it would be a danger to the user, because there are a few guards where the cross guard is very close to the users arms or torso, and when moving it around you could hit your self. The points of my cross guard are a bit sharp and I have been scratched by them while just moving through some guards at slow speed. More so there are a lot of historical techniques that you would really have to rub against the guard for. That being said Star Wars sword fights are complete stage combat with a little Japanese kendo (or actually one of the other Katana martial arts) mixed in.

It would be better if it had up swept guard like pic related... side note, I'm not encouraging DarkSword Armory, which is what pic related is.

But cross guards are very functional and very important. They add tremendous protection, because hands are a prime target, and as the years went on, they became more and more developed, eventually becoming the swept hilt and even the basket hilt.

I really highly recommend the Spyderco Sharpmaker for beginners, I know $60 seems like a lot (it's not, my Wicked Edge set up is literally $1,000) but it is a great starting point, I still use mine for serrations. Also learning to free hand on oil or water stones is a great skill, check YouTube for that.

Before I got my Wicked Edge, I would free hand to thin the bevels, and then finish the edge on my Sharpmaker, and then strop.

Otherwise, what a waste. The only other justification would be collection, in which case you'd want to keep it in as mint a condition as you possibly can for decades, and then hope you can find another collector who's willing to buy it for a large enough offer. Even then, there's no guarantee that you'll be able to find a collector who's willing to pay big enough.
