It's called desecration of a corps and yes it's ilegal. Even if the island in question is outside the US you (assuming you're an American citizen) can be charged.
American citizens are subject to US federal law even while outside the country. There is also the potential of being charged with an additional crime if it's determined that you left the country specically to commit a crime.
