Going to finally put the "but the US military has advanced combat technology so why bare arms?" liberal argument to rest. If you know anything about strategy then you'd know that a sovereignty cannot win a war within its own borders if majority of the people that supported the sovereignty decide to overthrow it. The reason why is because war costs money, a substantial amount of money, and the people under the government are the source of funds for war; if all those people decided not to fund the government then the government would exponentially aqcuire debts to pay for the war and that would only cause inflation of the dollar and the government would lose credibility to pay those debts and eventually not be able to get anymore funds for war; the government would lose the war because of debt and nobody will fight for free to be enslaved. Also, if the governmemt somehow manages to terminate millions of what makes up the country then the chances of survival of the country will be slim as other powerful forces will come in to take advantage of the opportunity.

The purpose behind the 2nd Amendment is so that the citizens can defend themselves from an oppressive government if necessary. However, it was written during a time when the only thing that people had really bad single-shot rifles and there wasn't much of a difference between a soldier and an armed civilian besides training.

That's very different from today's world where things like air support, armored vehicles, bombs, and more matched up against civilian shotguns, pistols, and hunting rifles. If the government really was a dick and convinced the entire military to somehow magically go with it (all but impossible), here are the two possible scenarios:

People don't have guns - The civilians gets fucked

People have guns - More civilians get killed, some military members are killed, and the civilians get fucked.


THAT SAID, guns are now used more for self-protection against criminals, which is a legitimate reason. Although it would be nice to reset everything to zero, the "genie" is already out of the bottle and it would be very hard to have enough restrictions to prevent criminals from getting their hands on guns.

Note: I am not advocating for or against guns. I'm just pointing out that the reasons behind the 2nd amendment are kinda moot with today's weaponry.

Personally I own guns because shooting is, again, fun as fuck, it gets me outside a few times a month, and it helps me deal with my hand tremors. Just about all other things are generally secondary until I start hunting later this year, then it's all about the glorious meat. Venison for life!

If the government were to fight a war against it's own people it would have to be extremely fucking careful to not look like it's a war. It would have to label the people it attacks as domestic terrorists and target only them, meaning everyone else would be "safe" and the "domestic terrorists" could easily blend into and out of the masses. Tanks, drones, etc would be useless in this type of war, it would have to be fought door to door by men on the ground. If the people start thinking the government is waging war on them they will universally up-rise, which includes the people in the military.
