So the only "media exposure" it got was the usual SJW "misogynistic nerds who're mad that brave women are invading their hobby." This was really underscored by Wikipedia's policy of being a tertiary source: the only things allowed on the Wiki are things reported on by so-called reputable secondary sources, which mostly means mainstream journalists. So the GamerGaters were desperate for positive media coverage, and Milo was (is?) a writer for Breitbart. Which obviously isn't considered reliable by the Wikibureaucracy (not that it should be), but I guess it helped with some feeling of inadequacy, and really galvanized the long-simmering left-right rivalries.
