But it's very hit or miss on finding the right job in my region. Unable to relocate due to house + kid.
I basically make $9.50 and have gotten turned down for a 50k job that upgrades to 85k after 5 years because of lack of experience.
Forced to go back to school and get a higher level of license and bachelors in my field. Meanwhile a 19 year old I went to school with got the job because his dad retired from there.

When I shipped out to bootcamp july 2001, there was no war going on. USS Cole just got bombed the year before but I had no idea, internet wasn't as evolved as it is today. I signed up for some adventure and feeling patriotic. Almost 16 years later, I'm 4 years from retirement. While my peer group is sitting on the same sofa smoking the same weed or paying off student loans for their bull shit degree for a career field that they're not working in. My experiences in the Navy have been awesome. Got my dream job working on 25k horse power engines, loyal friends, traveled to 43 countries, currently getting paid $84k a year, got my college paid for in a field that like, never worried about having food or a roof over my head. My kid's got their college covered with the post 9/11 GI bill, got my house in San Diego using my VA loan. You literally get a little box of adulthood that sets you up for life so when you see one of those recruiters at your JC, put your ego aside and ask 'em some questions. Get your facts straight on what a little service can do for a young adult.

In the off chance I die while in the military, better me than you, your family or the folks next door. I'm ok with that.

When I was 10 years old I was obsessed with the army. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I would only wear green camo and boots and I would buzz cut my hair (well, we were poor, so my mom cut my hair like that regardless). I even bought some old military jacket from a yard sale.

Well one day we were in one of those rent-a-centers, and this military guy walks up and starts telling me how I need to take that coat off because "stealing glory is illegal" like I even knew what the fuck that meant. At one point he started yelling at my mother telling her that it's a serious crime and that he should have me arrested.

He was asked to leave the business by one of them employees, saying "is this how you treat someone who fought for your freedom?!"

I worked with someone not that long ago who was in the military; from how he talked about it, he never had to go through actual combat and was basically paid to travel the world. Now, he was an alcoholic for unrelated reasons and sucked dick at his job, and it was a really easy job, and then got fired and ran back to the military. Quite frankly, this leads me to believe that if you win the dice roll, you just get a free pass through your service and get to travel around being posted in peaceful areas. If you fall in here, you're a veteran, good job, and while you provided a valuable service, you worked a job the same as almost everyone else in America.

Unrelated to that, it's pretty hard to say, but I'd be willing to bet money that a pretty fair amount of people joined almost exclusively for the pay and benefits(namely the free college). They're essentially mercenaries working a job, and while that's perfectly fine, it falls in much the same place as the last part, they worked an essential job, the same as everyone else.

Now, I'm sure there's at least a few people who joined with the intent to help the country, and were genuinely useful, and in that case I can respect your drive to fight for what you believe in.

I joined the Army Reserves when I was 18. I never thought highly of myself. Went to Iraq. Everyone was cool. The *hooah hooah* Captian Americas of the company were looked down on; viewed as liabilities

One day an IED struck our convoy, 2 vehicles in front of mine got damaged, but no casualties.

Went to the VA a few years after a got back, submitted a disability packed and just regurgitated PTSD symptoms I had read online.

I now get 2,900 dollars (tax free) per month, plus I got all the back pay in a lump-sum for the 18 months it took for my compensation packet to go through.

Currently also get 1200/mo as a living stipend for finishing my Masters degree.

I live in Texas so the state compensates my tuition completely (120 credit hours worth)

So I'm 28. 1 year away from a Masters degree. No Debt. Own a small, but very nice townhouse, and just got a new truck. 24k in the bank still.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit of a consistent drinker when I got back home. remember around 8pm, every night, I'd start to get a sort of anxiety that would swiftly creep up on me. 6-10 beers would bring me back down to a good spot. After a year however, the anxiety just kind of faded away. Others from my unit were not so lucky. Plenty of good people getting into really severe problems with drugs and alcohol.

Where I live, we have so many veterans in the population that there is a 'veterans court' where people are sent if they get into trouble with the law.

These courts are far more lenient, and will often do everything that they can to keep a veteran out of jail or getting convicted of a crime. Usually vets are sent to some form of probation if they promise to work with the VA on their substance abuse.

It's certainly not enough, but that's one little step that my Texas county has taken to trying to help these people.
