If you want something exotic, go to Japan. If you want something that's just a bit more familiar, go to California. The Pacific Coast is really one of the nicer regions in the US too, so you'll be in good shape there. Though checking out Japan and being a hop, skip, disputed sea, and a jump away from other more exotic locale seems awesome.

Northstar is where rich people go but the skiing is definitely not the highest level in the Tahoe area. It is more on the intermediate side than some of the other resorts. My friend's family owns a condo there that they rent out part of the year, and I love staying there. Their facilities are incredibly new and nice, but like I said, not the highest level of skiing.
