America is a nation where if you have even the faintest semblance of a work ethic, you will make enough to have a place to stay and enough to eat (unless if you live in some place ungodly expensive like Cali or New York, in that case YOU MOVE).

If it seems we have little pity for the homeless it's because they CAN not be homeless by simply trying in life. But they do not, you know why? Because nearly all of them are degenerate addicts and drunks that need to be drunk and/or high all the time. They've learned that they can afford far more heroin, crack, or maddog 20/20 if they don't have a home.... and weirder yet, many of them HAVE homes (or at least a motel to stay at) yet allow you to think they're homeless because panhandling pays so well.

By all accounts panhandling WAY more than minimum wage (and if collecting all government benefits, even in a low income state, gives you the equivalent of about a 12 dollar an hour job). There have been studies that it pays about 20 an hour.... I know a guy that personally did research on this by panhandling for a week. He made 400 dollars that week with about 20 hours holding the sign. He also found out many panhandlers have nice cars and apartments....

So yeah, if we have no pity for beggars it's because we worked our asses off for everything we have. Minimum wage jobs are always hiring and they'll hire felons and people with sketchy work history.

There's simply no excuse except laziness and laziness should not be rewarded. The government already pays far more than a minimum wage job to people that aren't trying and to give them more of our money on top of that is fucked.

Truth is, upward mobility in America is largely a myth. Chances are, you will die no more wealthy than your parents were in America.

Sure, you can always trot out those few exceptions - literally, the one in a million - as examples of the myth that "hard work always pays off". But reality is, there are millions working hard every day and not getting any further than their parents did - often sliding down into poverty, little by little, day by day.

And even the examples they trot out are often lies. Sure, hard work and perseverance paid off.. but so did that $100K education his parents paid for... so did that sugar daddy who bankrolled the business for 3 years before it took off... Not everyone has that. Not everyone CAN have that. Little details like that get swept under the rug so the story fits the myth.

A 2007 Treasury Department study of inequality allows us to examine mobility at the most elite level. On the horizontal axis (see below) is an individual’s position on the income spectrum in 1996. On the vertical level is where they were in 2005. To examine the myth of mobility, I focused on the chances of making it into the top 10, 5 or 1 percent. We see that these chances are abysmal. I have an autistic son. After his mother died, I had to quit my job to take care of him. He needs 24/7 supervision and there's no day care within 30 miles that takes autistic children.
I was an OTR truck driver. There's no way I can stick him in a truck with me and do the job. With no day care, I can't work locally. Worse, his school is only 4 days a week instead of 5. There's no consistency in school so any job has to be part time and flexible. Both my parents are dead and his grandma is over 80 years old and not in any condition to take care of him.
Maybe I could retrain for something else, if I were not already 48years old. I hear every company in the world just falls all over themselves trying to hire 50 year olds for entry level positions (/sarcasm). Especially ones who need such flexible hours.
In a few years, my son will be 18 and I can put him in a group home. Then I can hit the road and try to salvage something of a retirement for myself.

Ive been homeless, ive been in debt, ive gone to university and ive failed more times than you can count. I tried what didnt work and kept changing my path.

I now make 40k a year as a trades apprentice, and im currently on a job where im making 3k a week after taxes. Im not even that good at my job but I show up every day on time and I do my best.

I also own my own side business (had to buy insurance and register online for 60 dollars and pay 200 for a license. Done.
