Had you considered the commonalities that people get when tripping on stuff? Like people all over the world, from different cultures and lifestyles, tend to see very similar images and themes when tripping balls on hallucinogens. If you listen to people describe their trips when they're on Shrooms or Iowaska or whatever, they often describe very similar themes and "beings" they meet within the trip. Considering that so many religious rituals (especially ancient ones) involved the use of altered states of mind, that could be where some of the common images are coming from, just a quirk of what the human mind wants to see when it's slipped its moorings for a bit.
