When you speak, you also have to make sure the cadence of your voice isn't hitting sour notes that aren't part of the chord scale.
Putting it simply, if your backing band or track is playing in the key of Bb minor, you'd want to rap while keeping your voice in that same key.
Mumble rappers don't do this and sound like trash, a lot of rappers are rapping on out of tune, non scale cadences and they sound like trash. No matter how good the lyrics are, if your notes clash with your instruments, it's not pleasing to the ear.

Possibly. It's easier to naturally hit the right cadences without thinking about it after practicing just some regular singing or scatting. The rappers who play instruments or sing tend to sound a hundred times better than those that don't, I'd look into listening to melodic music to get a feel for it, it'll even make your freestyle even stronger and give you an edge over the average amateur Joe.

Cello is classy as fuck, but it doesn't have frets and is rather difficult to learn by yourself. Bass guitar is really simple to learn and play.
I'd say in the long run, Cello is more fun but takes more work, and bass guitar is less fun, but you have fun immediately and it's simple.
I'd say bass guitar, you can even learn some great sounding jazz licks.
