Call = you get the right to buy a stock for that price
Put = You get the right to sell a stock for that price

You do not need to execute them. And because finances are weird you don't even need the stocks to sell call options. Appearently you can have negative stocks and also appearently nobody would execute their call option before the expiration date, because maths have proven that it's a bad choice.
