I have a question /b/. How long do you have to have been on 4chan

The stories and information posted here are artistic works of fiction and falsehood.
Only a fool would take anything posted here as fact.

Oldfag had nothing to do with how long you have been here technically. What I mean is, if you were here from the early years of the site you're an oldfag. 10 years from now, ppl that started today will not be considered oldfags.

It's not how long you have been visiting. It's When you stated.

Sorry, you will never be an oldfag. And neither will I for they matter. 2010 here.

The golden age, 2003-2008. Basically if you started lurking then, you're an oldfag.. if you started after, you aren't and never will be.

I've been around since late 04 or early 05. Not entirely sure. I would say oldfag is pre 08 or 09. Around that time 4chan was starting to get too much mainstream attention and cancer definitely started to take hold. Fun times has still been had after that though,

'04 here: this is correct. You don't HAVE to get all the older jokes, individuals, and memes with this site in the early years (Cracky-chan, Creepy-chan, etc.) to be considered an oldfag, but 2008 is the cutoff.

Basically, if you got in before Boxxy, you're nost likely good.
>>
>>720348221
oldfag isn't quantifiable, it is a state of mind

>>
>>720349422

Surprisingly, I'm quite content with my life. I usually post on 4chan to give advice anonymously. I think the key is moderation: too much time here will warp your outlook; too little time here and you lose following pulse of the Internet. It's kinda interesting that way.
>>

>Basically, if you got in before Boxxy, you're nost likely good.
What about Cracky-chan?

I mentioned her. She actually showed up in 2005, so that's well before Boxxy.

You cannot be an oldfag. Oldfags are those who were here from the first couple of years of this site being up. Anyone who has been here since 2006 is a newfag. No exceptions.
>>
>>720349713
That makes a lot of sense. I wish I could moderate myself like that. I either spend hours every day on here or don't come here for months, there's no in between
>>
>>720348538
This.

I stumbled upon this garbage around 06 in college. So young....So innocent. Biggest mistake ever.
>>
>>720349919
Okay, so if I first visited here in 2005 but didn't start regularly browsing till 2009, am I newfag?
>>
My first saved jpg from this site was in June 2003. I have seen every kinda shitpost made. Every spam. Every monstrosity. Nothing phases me anymore. Everything posted here is for the lulz.

BUT. It's been shit since the anonymous movement made this site too public. Now it's too safe. Raids rarely happen anymore. There are too many rules and SJWs. But it is hard to leave. The sad truth of the matter is that I have no place else to go.
>>
>>720349929

There's really no magic bullet for self-moderation. If it makes you feel any better, 4chan definitely has cycles that, once you pick up on, can give you some perspective on your priorities in the real world.

It all just depends, really.
>>
>>720350274

>june 2003

the site only went up in october
>>
>>720349001
damn. i remember that
>>
>>720350325
Can you define these cycles? I've been coming here since 2011 (first visited in 09) and I noticed summerfags used to be more of a thing but now that all the kids have smartphones and laptops it's becoming more and more seamless. It's like Ed Edd n Eddy, summer never ends
>>
>>720350472
Hmm. Maybe I was led from 2chan to 4chan at that time. Anyhow I know it was around 2003-2004. That jpg is in my 4chan folder numbered in a similar manner. I would need to dig to find it though. You may be right however as it does seem a little early.
>>
>>720349001
Yeah this does seem to confirm it. So probably been here since 2004 (ish).

The cycles have definitely evolved over the years, and as it stands there's no clear chronology for very recent memory, but I'll try.

Early 4chan was characterized by a lot of turbulence and shuffling. It was shut down four times (in 2004, the longest time down was SIX WEEKS) after a lot of takedown attempts by GoDaddy and other collaborators. You could say that the site was more like the wild wild west, but I would say it was closer to a safari. A lot of boards were created and dismantled (did you know 4chan used to have an /l/ board? I'll let you figure out what could have gone on there) in this time. This is where we get pretty ubitquitous boards like /k/, /v/, and /f/. It wasn't a simpler time, no matter what anyone says: 4chan could have died out much, much earlier than a lot of people here think.

The cycles themselves would focus around particular users or memes until they became sagas in their own right. 2005 saw 1M GET (2004 saw 100K GET) and this is really where it begins to pick up as a place to "go" for an undiluted look at the Internet. Sagas could really sustain themselves with sister websites like ED (also launched 2004), so many things are happening in parallel.

2008 is when you start to see 4chan in the news. By this point you have Chanology, the flood toward /r9k/ (started as a joke by turning off /b/ for a day---seriously), and Boxxy.

Other stuff happened too: 2006 had DON'T MESS WITH FOOTBALL, which also had 4chan in hot water in addition to the expected problems. These caused overhauls to the 4chan board system, including later replacements of administrators and moderation duties.

tl;dr - 4chan cycles are typically due to influx of sister and antagonistic sites, coupled with waves of media exposure which is being more carefully channeled and reigned into "cyber bubbles" beyond merely subcultures.
>>
User from 2003-2006 is oldfag. I've been here 9 years and I'm not an oldfag.
And for the retards I always see, oldfag is not your age
>>
>>720348221
I've been here for a few years, I get called a newfag at least once a day during the winter months and when summer comes around I get called a summerfag 10 times a day.
>>
>>720350589

Following the rise of Tumblr and other social media sites, knowledge about 4chan was (in my view) polynomially expanded. Adding in the online exposure of Internet personas (I'd honestly hate to use the term "lolcow" but they're included too) and movements which originated on 4chan--Dusty, Creepy-chan getting onto America's Next Top Model, Internet vigilantism, etc--would bring in waves of people.

You can think of waves on /b/ as cultural diffusion over a text and image medium. I would say the newest "serious" wave isn't some meme or copypasta or anything, but specifically "generic" OC which has lost any semblance of reality due to its artificial nature. For example, when you look at cock tribute threads or cuck threads, you often see the same exact wordings, images, and (for lack of a better word) style associated with them: you always know what to expect. This artificiality is something that's really ramped up very recently in my view.

Another is self-censorship. I don't mean vulgarity, but actual, serious thought. A lot of the revelations that we are not as private as we think online, I think, have had a chilling effect on the population as a whole on this board. That definitely shows.

Thanks man. I was familiar with a lot of the history you mentioned but it's cool to hear a synopsis in this way. Feel free to elaborate on anything you want to. Even though I didn't start actively browsing here until later, I was still very much familiar with many of the memes and themes at the time of their origination here through various channels, YouTube, GameFAQS, etc in 2006/2007. So while I did not explicitly come across them here I still have somewhat of a residual nostalgia for having experienced those things at the time of their conception.

As a result, I would never claim to be an oldfag nor am I saying that experiencing those things through various third parties is equivalent to have been HERE for the raw output, I still am familiar with the general "mood" of the internet at the time, as you described. Much more anonymity, still mostly an internet nerd haven, no major social media movement yet. The nostalgia factor is there for sure, something I think I can share in the spirit with oldfags despite me not actually being one. If that makes sense
>>
>>720349001
ah, the old good times
>>
>>720350508
no you don't
>>
>>720353231

4chan's history is pretty interesting if you're looking at how things connected to each other. Though there are cut-off dates for being "old", I wouldn't worry too much about that if it doesn't affect the way you behave online.

Was your first visit here in 2009 a result of reading about moot in Time magazine? If so, I have a funny story to tell you.

If it's any consolation, you really started around here (2011) at the time /pol/ was created.
>>
I got in around 2006. Was mostly because I was really into saving animated gifs. YTMND led me here to /gif/ before the huge porn take over.
>>
>>720348221

I've been here for 6-8 years, but only few minutes per day. Plus the fact that I still sucks in English compared with anons here.

So I don't really consider myself as an oldfag, even if I know the most popular 4chan private jokes.
>>
>>720353878
Nah, like I said I knew about this place from 06/07 through third party forums and what not, just didn't really bother checking it out till 2009 when one my friends starting making jokes about moot in an xbox live party and I was like fuck it time to see what the big deal is

Had no idea the site basically looked like an autistic 5 year old made it till I got here. Still looks like that but I've come to appreciate it for the nostalgia factor if nothing else. I'm not exactly sure what compelled me to come back here and start browsing frequently in 2011, I think it's because I got involved with a raid and was like oh shit this is pretty fun and then stuck around. But it still kinda felt like familiar territory to me since I had known about all the memes and culture of this board long before I came here
>>
>>720355053

Well, you may find this interesting. In Time Magazine's third annual "World's Most Influential Person" contest, the #1 spot was claimed by moot. Here's an actual excerpt:

"For proof of moot's influence on the Web, one need look no further than the TIME 100 poll results. While Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao got a larger vote total (20,391,818), the runner-up for the title of World's Most Influential Person, Malaysian politician Anwar Ibrahim, received a mere 47 on the influence scale. Moot denies knowing about any concerted plan by his followers to influence the poll, though TIME.com's technical team did detect and extinguish several attempts to hack the vote."

However, if you take the first letter of every person on that list between ranks #1 and #21, you get an acrostic message: MARBLECAKE ALSO THE GAME. 4chan had rigged moot to the top and the next twenty ranks to send a message.

They didn't catch it until it was too late.

And this site has never been particularly stylish, but that was never the point. It was just supposed to be a functional place that brought in revenue for moot. Its style came from its users.
>>
>>720354857
>Plus the fact that I still sucks in English compared with anons here.
You can't be serious. English here is awful to say the least.
>>
>>720348538
newfag detected.

the 10-11 years I've wasted on this website taught me one thing about this newfag/oldfag bullshit:

if you still feel excited about /b/ and past/current memes and even talk irl in 4chan inside jokes, you're a newfag. if you're getting hyped up for the internet hate machine, you're a newfag.

basically, once you stop seeing 4chan through rose tinted glasses, that's when you've become an oldfag.
>>
>>720355877
kek that's fucking hilarious I didn't know about the first letter thing
>>
>>720356357
u w0t m8?
>>
>>720356542
By that logic almost everyone here is an oldfag because nearly everyone agrees /b/ is shit
>>
>>720357429
well there's a difference, anon. if you once thought that /b/ was cool and then realised it was just nostalgia goggles, you're an oldfag.
if you come here and think "this is shit, but I'll waste my time here anyway", you're still a newfag.
I don't know about you, but when I was a newfag back in 07/08, /b/ was this marvellous place of dark humor, political incorrectness and a place for political rebellion (when anon really started to take form).
back then oldfags from earlier years already said "/b/ was never good" but it was for me. now I'm past that and I don't think /b/ went downhill a lot (it did, though), but I'm 100% sure that I was just a newfag back then and those oldfags back then are where I am now
>>
>>720348538
started in 38 can confirm
>>
>>720357841
Yeah but it's already been proven that the "/b/ was never good" meme is horseshit. There are very obvious and real differences. The biggest one being raiding. Raiding was fun as shit, and it doesn't exist anymore. Therefore, by defintion, old /b/ was definitely better. Was it the perfect enigma of internet standard? No, but it was better. And many oldfags feel this way
>>
>>720358625
what's holding you back from starting raids, anon? I'm sure there will be some willing anons.
once a raid/troll is successful, more will follow
>>
>>720348599
Dubs speak truth. This from a fellow 2012 fag. The fuck have I been doing with my life for these past 5 years?
>>
>>720358894
Have you seen attempts to start good raids here? They immediately get shut down by a torrent of "NYPA FAGGOT" from newfags who have never actually raided but when they got here they saw other people doing it and thought it was the cool thing to do on /b/. Doesn't matter how good the idea is, people don't even evaluate it anymore before immediately discarding it. I've done my best to participate in several solid threads throughout the last years but they never really got off the ground because of said horseshit. The last good raid I remember doing was in early 2013.
>>
>>720359234
we should think of a code word that won't attract a lot of newfags.

the op should contain a code word, alongside the same picture everytime and the plan on post two.

I suggest "fruity bsns" along with pic related. got a better idea?
>>
>>720348538
2005 here. feels good.
>>
>>720359654
kek I'm down. But the hard part is getting the good people in on it while excluding the newfags
>>
>>720359840
maybe an infographic will help? first spread the word in threads that aren't cancer-ridden, then start posting operations.
