Coast Guard. 12 year CG vet here. If you like guard duty or being underway for 12-24 months, then the AF or Navy are the way to go. If you like sitting around playing video games, saving lives and drinking more than the Navy, the CG is the way to go.

Whatever you do, go for a technical field, and be smart enough to test as eligible for that shit. A short stint in the navy/air force as a janitor or someone who loads the bombs, doesn't look all that great on a resume (but don't get me wrong, it still looks better than something like retail or fast food).

But a short stint as an electrician or a radar guy, or someone who solders and welds can be a springboard into a career. Generally speaking, having a technical career in Navy or Air Force, is equivalent to a community college degree in that thing. Lots of guys with decent middle class technical jobs got trained for it in Navy or Air Force.

Sweep, shine, mop (or SWAB, for the squids), wax, rake, and basically scrubbing down whatever surface you're told to scrub. It's probably 90% of what I do. The other 10% is filing paperwork on each cleaning task I've been assigned or inventorying cleaning supplies. I mean, technically I'm an electronics technician, but most of my maintenance is (gasp) cleaning the equipment using specialised techniques. Then, I also clean the spaces the equipment is housed in. We fucking chip paint and repaint, degrease and regrease, strip weatherproofing and reapply...basically "advanced" cleaning.

OP if you want to be an overpaid janitor, the military can be fine. Just keep in mind, that's mostly what you'll be. Also, not going home because you have to re-clean a room you've cleaned 5 times that day, just to keep you there longer because your boss is too much of a pussy to tell the department head they really have no use for you right now; well just expect to be doing cleaning to kill time and look busy a LOT.
