If you could have any animal enlarged/shrunk down to be horse sized, so that you could ride around on it and battle for supremacy, what animal would you have?

You also get another animal to just hang out with

Winged ant
>super strong
>formic acid jet
>big old pincers
>fast on land and air

Bat
>Fluffy
>super fast in air
>night vision (sonar, w/e)

Also sheds wings after mating to become queens or ground-bound drones. Some kind of wasp would be better, like the tiny ones. They are like flying ants but sting.
>>
Probably an alligator
>>
>>720217608
Theyre not nearly as strong and tbh i feel like since we're suspending disbelief anyway that i should be allowed to use a temporary feature of an animal's life cycle as a permanent perk.
>>
>>720217323

>>
>>720217773
That's why I said tiny ones. The smaller the bug, the stronger they are when scaled up. I see your point though. I would go for the smallest breed of ground wasp. They are about the same as a flying ant but can sting. They are also masters of hovering around ground targets to get a good sting angle. If I could lock it into an age category like you said, I'd keep it near adolescence too.

Good choices. Mantis cant fly but they're fast as hell. But still, no projectile weapon and no flight = sprayed and snipped for you sir. Your eagle would probably fuck my bat up tho

I don't think theyre particularly fast or agile. A fly would run circles around it. But then again i think a fly is probably the best flyer out there.
>>
>>720218259
Theyd be the same size tho! Ant would be stronger, faster, have a much wider snipper, be able to shoot acid, and sting (obviously not as bad tho) but yh totally still team ant all the way

I think we can safely say that winged insects are probably the way to go. Team up? What's your other animal? And your 3 weapons (heavy, personal, and close combat)
>>
>>720217095
A vespid, most likely pepsis grossa.
I could tame it armor it (past it's natural amount) and ride it into battle.

I supplied a link for those who don't know what that is.

>>
>>720218379
Exoskeletons work because their bodies have a very close volume-surface area ratio when they are small
Why do you think there are no big animals with exoskeletons in the first place
>>
>>720218379
Surface area to volume ratio isnt linear as something increases in size.
>>
>>720219364
Jesus christ. Those things are the stuff of nightmares. Flying insects ftw. Whats your other animal?
>>
>>720219319
Team up? WE WILL DOMINATE! Other animal, fly fox. It's a great pet. Smart, flies, kind of like a bat with cat-level personality. Weapons: Heavy, Olin H&K automatic shotgun with AP slug ammo. Personal, illegally modified 9mm Baretta pistol that fires 3 rounds per trigger pull (used to own one until it backfired and got ruined). HTH, pride of my knife collection I got at auction for a steal, a 9" razor sharp titanium diving knife. Thing cuts through just about anything and never goes dull.
>>
>>720219478
The first thing I mentions are vespids, it's just a vague categorization that wasps and hornets typically fall under,
>>
>>720219368
Are you assuming that the thickness of the exoskeleton wouldn't grow along with the rest of it? Probably my mistake but i fail to see how a structure could exist on a small scale and not exist on a larger scale if all of the composite elements are at exactly the same ratios as they were before. And there were gigantic insects during the cretaceous period no?

Insects are tiny because their respiratory system is very dependent upon diffusion ("the slowest force in microbiology"): they have a hard time evolving to be larger.

the biggest they have ever been was about 1, maybe 1,5 meters. It's not the problem of ratios you got there, it's about the oxygen. they don't have any lungs, they have some direct tunnels going to every cell in the body. If those tunnels get too long, they'll stop working

>>
>>720217095
Bat
>>
>>720221296
Structural integrity is only one of the problems, them being able to breathe is the other problem.
You'd have to build them armor, with some sort of respiration boosting system in order for them to even survive turning into the size of a horse.
>>
>>720221296
nah, it wouldn't work. The problem is, to complete te equality of all the ratios, you'd need there to be more oxygen in the air around, otherwise at the end of those pipes won't be enough of it for the cells. So some milions years ago, when there was a fuckton more oxygen, the insects were able to grow, no chance now.
And before you ask - add more oxygen to the air around you, and you're dead. Either getting older faster or burning alive, depend how much more you add

If I had a mantis mount, I'd make an outfit I could wear to blend in with it and then find a spot to hide with the mantis natural camouflage. In this world of giant fighting mounts, winning by stealth could be superior.

R u Op. You seem like op. We need rules for Ur game. Like the animal is able to be controlled but nothing beyond their normal "capabilities" and that the advantages of upscaling should also bear some of the disadvantages. Eg flying would be a lot slower as it takes way more effort to fly as a large object and thus compromises speed. Unless my "upscaling physics" is wrong LOL

OP here. The only rules are 1) that the laws of physics are suspended to allow your animals to reach and survive at horse height. 2) mammals/birds/fish are 1.3 times larger than insects to make it slightly fairer And 3) youre allowed to make yourself a saddle/cockpit but it has to attach somehow and not be too heavy for your animal.
>>
>>720223833
The crab has a very thick carapace. If it shields it's eyes and face with it's claws, it would be able to survive the formic acid spray. The ant would have to get close in order hit precisely with the spray, giving my crab the chance to take the initial acid hit with little damage and pincer the ants body into mush.
>>

No. A cube that is two times bigger is two times "bigger". If a cube is proportionally twice as large (size = mass) then it would just be twice as heavy and the measurements wouldn't nt be proportionaly double. Learn to clarify the terms of your proposals before positing them.

for fuck's sake, we are already ignoring the fact, that horse-sized insect cannot live, because it would SUFFOCATE. What difference does it make to you, that an aquatic creature would suffocate because of a lack of water instead of air?
>>
>>720219769
Oxygen content was much higher, insects just have spricales not lungs. they breath via diffusion basically.

Because the insect is already on land. You wouldn't expect someone with a jellyfish to rule the land.
What are the rules in this place anyway?

i ABSOLUTELY expect jellyfishes to rule. More than some stupid ants anyway. claiming aquatic creatures are out of contest is having double standards

Debating between spider and some sort of bird.

A horse-sized insect would not be able to get enough oxygen to function. A reptile might be okay for very short bursts of energy, but it will get tired real quick and you'll only be conquering the tropics.

I also choose a horse. They are already bred better than anything else for the exact purpose of riding around and battling for supremacy. Good luck getting your horse-sized ant off the ground when its boneless limbs instantly snap under its own weight, its tracheae clog, and its hemolymph stagnates uselessly in an oxygen void.
>>
>>720217095
A flea for obvious reasons.
>>
>>720229842
We've already established that making animals horse sized would include ways for them to survive and thrive at that size.
It's more of a "what if" than a "what is" thread.
>>
Rattlesnake fast enough to strike you bitches before you get close enough
>>
>>720217095
Chameleon. They have anti air capabilities, can slightly blend into environment, and can look two ways at once for maximum surveillance. Check and mate. Oh, and a centipede to ride around on. Fuckers move fast as hell and you never said they wouldn't protect themselves given the chance, so if anybody got spooked and tried to fuck it up then I wouldn't need to worry since one bite and either you're ripped in half or you're dead from the venom.
>>
>>720229842
A horse sized tiger could easily take down your horse sized horse that was bred for the exact purpose of riding and battling.

crabs are soulless scavengers, there is no way in fucking hell you could befriend or even tame a giant crab of any description.

their soulless-ness is what makes them such great survivors
>>
>>720232865

sure, but i meant cheating in that physics are completely thrown out and all abilities scale and transfer
>>
Great thread OP, too bad this board is nothing but autists.

Let's set up some rules for you retards:
1. All mounts have the same abilities as non-enlarged animals. That means exclusively water animals cant go on land. Fuck you jellyfish
2. Abilities are auto balanced for fun, e. g. mantis shrimp can fuck up fragile hummingbirds, but not tanky coconut crabs.
3. Mounts dont need food, dont grow old and dont get sick.
4. All mounts are completely tamed, but more intelligent animals are capable of following more complicated commands.

Id probably choose a hawk or something. Flying, high speed, sharp talons, das da sheit mane
>>
>>720223435
what do you do when youre under attack, your coconut crab mount just crawls up into that perfect ball of armour the way they like to, and your fleshy human body is left to be torn apart by giant insect limbs.

Im the anti-crab guy in the post above too ^^ you people dont understand crabs, they are fucking heartless sons of bitches. A crab has no love and no morals, dont be fooled.

>>
>>720233414
Abilities would scale. I'm not saying it wouldn't do shit, I'm saying it wouldn't be as good. If we're forgetting everything without setting ground rules then I can say pick an elephant but it can fly, shoot lazers and has a boipussy because fuck physics lolxd
>>
>>720230588
Cat bones are pretty weak. I do give you credit though that's the best idea I've seen in this thread. I would also give a horse-sized primate of some kind, human or otherwise, a spin. Opposable thumbs and a superior intelligence may allow them to bash or headlock a rival steed.

All of you faggots crying about how you are pretending and don't care about the laws of physics can go fuck yourselves. You are asking for shit with superpowers and it's not creative or fun. Speed would increase proportionate to size regardless of wind resistance?
>hurrdurrr my steed can disobey physics such as the cube squared law
Okay, house fly, max 15mph, 300ug, multiplied to the largest of horses (1500kg), means it would move 75,000,000,000 miles per hour. That is faster than the speed of light in Earth's atmosphere of 670,320,000. Good job, while riding your fly mount you turn into pure energy and make an explosion large enough to cause nuclear winter. You win the game.
