I fucking hate it with a passion
33% of the team i work with are far too stupid to do the job but it's impossible to fire them due to various issues, manager is a thundercunt who thinks encouraging us to work harder means shouting at us and blaming us for all the problems which aren't our fault on a near daily basis, i'm an office worker yet i'm paid the same as the guy who drives the forklift in the warehouse, the company expects us to do 30% more work YEAR ON YEAR with no additional staff so, in order for us to hit our december target, we were working 60+ hour weeks when we're contracted for 35 and the thanks we got on the first day back in january you ask? We were told the company is going to continue to expect unrealistic targets and unrealistic working hours and if we don't like it to look for another job. Great way for a fortune 500 company to treat the staff that bust their balls reaching stupid targets.

But I stuck with it for the cash, albeit shit cash.

Finished school, got a place in university, wanted a part time job so I could get some money to blow without having to get another loan.
Took ages to get an interview from anywhere I applied to, this place gave me one, First interview and I got the job.
Couldn't be fucked job searching again, that's why I haven't left.

Yes, I'm one of the R&D groups. I get to do something interesting every day and my performance is judged on how many unique and interesting things I can imagine so I'm literally paid to fuck around in my lab. Kind-of odd to be in an industry where (in industry) job options can fit on a single page though since there's not many large fabs.

Honestly, it probably is £5.55 then. I checked how much I was earning like last time I got paid, so I must've counted the hours wrong when I was working it out or some shit. Though, i'll keep an eye on it this month now that you've said that.

For me, it wasn't. I built computers in high school and published web sites for my favorite video games. I got into video editing and eventually learned autocad when I went to college.

I struggled more with manual machining on the bridgeport and lathe. Once they set me up on CNC I destroyed it and quickly moved up to the top. I was machine shot supervisor on night shift for a while. I would train apprentices. Nights got shut down so I don't have the responsibility anymore but I kind of prefer it that way.

My work is ⅓ field work (on boat, diving, installing velocimeters or collecting core samples), ⅓ lab work (chemical analysis of interstitial water, erosion chamber experiments, configuring oceanographic gear), and ⅓ desk work (scripting in Matlab or R and programming in Python, collecting and making sense of data, writing reports, etc) so it's always exciting. Also, as I'm integral in a product from beginning to end, I don't feel like the proverbial cog in a wheel. And as I'm not the principle investigator, my day is rarely long so I enjoy a solid work-life balance ratio, even if my job is awesome and half that shit I would want to do anyway whether or not I was getting paid.

You may find it difficult to get contracts with that little experience. But if you think you are capable of doing a job there's nothing stopping you from applying.

My goal is to be making over 100k per year by the time I'm 40, so I'm really just gaining industrial experience. My life has been the slow and steady path for a while. Other than that, we work on a schedule that lets me have a lot of time off sporadically (3-4 days every two weeks). I'm in a new state and would like to start a meaningful relationship and gather social circles. I'm fit, funny, and generally well liked. I feel needed at my job. But I feel as if I've internalized some bipolar tendencies... not medicated. But there will be times when I really have to motivate myself to get out of funks. Keeping my mind active has really helped and led me to learning a lot of talents--but it's also made me a bit of a reclusive jack of all trades. At least I know what the problem is. Still things to work on.

I'm the tarot reader. What I do has nothing to do with the supernatural, and is a form of applied psychology. The phenomenon of apophenia means when people attempt to find meaning in a random medium, they will actually project material from their own subconscious. So I'm not actually reading the cards, I'm reading the person's body language, word choices, eye movements, and so on, and reflecting back at them everything they're telling me. When psychiatrists do this, the technique is called "reflection," and is part of standard psychotherapeutic treatment. What I show people isn't the future but their own inner, subconscious processes.

What I do is very much applied science.

We're getting pretty loosey goosey with the term scientist, but fine, I'll give that to you. Just because you're using aphophenia, you're neither studying aphophenia itself nor your subjects in any fashion as to report statistics on them as a group or experiments that can be repeated on individuals. You're more like a telemarketer who has uses certain psychological principles to make a sale but doesn't actually study the phenomenon or subjects themselves. But whatever, you want to go with applied scientist, fuck it, why not.
