I do Datacenter build and maintain, plus projects for different companies.

Ag, oil, realty, law, construction etc..

So one of our sites has about 900/1000 servers ... Linux / windows ..

So it requires scoping out the Datacenter environment, knowing VMware for building the ESXi hosts, and vCenter, as well as the automation that gets out into vRa(previously vCops)...

So Powershell scripting is a must.
And then domain & security... so monitoring is there as well (Orion etc) a lot of GPO builds because of changing things (we do some M&A) ...

Ummm yeah a lot more but that's it off the top of my head.

Overnight security is the fucking easiest thing in the world. Pay isn't fantastic, on it's own at least, but I have other sources of income some of which can be done while I'm on the clock at my job. Essentially getting paid twice for doing easy shit. Mostly freelance transcription shit. All I gotta do is bring my laptop to work with me. I can even use their WiFi and they'll never know. I'm basically the only person working there who actually knows technology so there's really no chance of them finding out. My boss treats technology like scary black magic.

Oh yeah man, kennals charge 100bucks plus, for real shit care. Dogs get sick all the time, most of my clients are people who try the kenal and look for an alternative.

There are all sorts of old hippie types that drive around all day walking dogs in the hills for rich white ladies, they offer dog sitting, but it's mostly the walks, it's the overnight thing that really sells it, cus alot of dogs live with people 24/7. Alot of it is also word of mouth. Craigslist always looks for low lvl run 8 dogs at a time thing, you really have to start with a small client base, and people will change there schedules to do more stuff if they know you can take care of their dog.

Apartantly I have the magic touch with dogs, aka give them walks and treats and don't agitate them when they are barking and they behave normal. I even secretly train them to be better dogs just for me if I'm bored.

Not him, but I'm sort of surprised there hasn't always been a market for dog sitters. I mean we've been hiring kid sitters and nannies and stuff for decades because some people just don't have enough free time to be, you know, good parents themselves. But only recently has the idea of "dog sitting" taken off as something more than just saying "here's a spare key to my house, please feed the dog every day while I'm gone."

Some people see it as a fairness sort of thing. For instance both my parents were workaholic types (although not the types who actually make lots of money doing so), so I mostly grew up with a nanny. Kinda fucked with me when I was younger because they were almost never around. When I basically asked them why they bothered having me when they didn't have the means to raise me themselves, they actually tried to get all defensive and say how dare I imply that they shouldn't have been allowed to have a kid just because they work a lot. They gave the same guilt trip to pretty much anyone else who asked too.

Now that I'm older I'm a bit more mellow about it, I can sort of see where they're coming from, in a way. Not enough to where I would ever do that if/when I have kids of my own, but I can at least understand that they earnestly did want a family together and tried to make it work as well as they could. Still though, that shit can seriously fuck with a kid's head. I guess when it comes to dogs they might be different, maybe a dog doesn't l really understand that their owner is supposed to be their primary caregiver, and in turn not really feel neglected as long as they had dog sitters and other dogs to interact with when their owner isn't around. But I'm not an animal psychologist so idk about all that.

It depends, I work mostly in commercials. Mostly non union. I cold called a production manager, got hired as a production assistant. It heavily depends on the industry and work place. We can either have what's called an Enterprise Bargaining Agreement, or an Industry Award Rate.
It's not all the same, but most employers that aren't shit will have shift penalties of some kind.

>>719497876
Yes it's paid for working at 'unsociable' hours. Most shift work in the civilized world will pay more for example nightshift workers.
>>
>>719497227
Well the fact you can't explain things to dogs, and they do get sad. combined with the whole shelter = two weeks on death row thing is a big thing, and I say litteraly anyone who feeds their dog daily is a better owner then a shelter just killing it.

But really people feel very guilty about leaving dogs behind, they can't feed themselves or anything. a kid? That is something you can justify as someone who can function by itself, which is a pretty shit way to live a life thinking you can just leave a kid behind.

I'm Canadian as well. I lived in Australia for three years. In Canada the most I've made on shift premiums was $2 extra (10% of my hourly pay). Working in Australia I would get 50% more an hour if I worked a night shift. 100% more an hour if I worked a night shift on a Saturday (technically Friday night) and 150% more on a Sunday (Saturday night).

I see. I think I remember hearing that used to be common here in the US too, but I work overnights and never really got extra pay, at least not here in Texas specifically. But that makes more sense, I guess when I first read the post my mind interpreted it as different pay rates per every individual hour, but now I get what you're saying.
>>
>>719498522
My first job here in Melbourne was McDonalds. I was on 24.20 an hour, and worked my way up to entry level management, for a whole $1 an hour.

McDonald's in Australia has an EBA, which actually pays below industry standard because it exempts them from having to pay shift penalties. Yes we get a tiny bit of extra base rate pay, but no shift penalties means the ONLY way to gain a solid amount of hours was to work night shift.

My point is, where employers force you to work nights purely for the sake of you having enough hours of pay to live on, that's exploitative as fuck.

In Australia we also inherited England's work laws, and we have what's called youth labor rates. People 20 and younger, all the way down to 14, get payed significantly less than an adult. At McD in AU, a $14 yearold gets I think 11 an hour, compared to a 21 yearold getting 26 an hour in today's pay. The difference is that 14 yearold will be given as many hours as possible, and the older he gets those hours will be reduced in order to save money on labour costs.
>>
>>719498183
>Well the fact you can't explain things to dogs, and they do get sad. combined with the whole shelter = two weeks on death row thing is a big thing, and I say litteraly anyone who feeds their dog daily is a better owner then a shelter just killing it.
Yeah, I know dogs can get sad and lonely when someone they're close to isn't around. But if someone just recently took the dog in, then realized they didn't have the time or whatever to play with it, and just put it into one of those kennel hotels, the dog probably wasn't around the person long enough to really bond with them, so I sort of doubt it's gonna get too sad. It'll probably just view the kennel workers as more of an owner than the actual owner who is just paying for the dog to stay there.

Obviously if they're in the pound or something it's different, but I thought we were discussing those dog hotel things, not just strays getting sent to a shelter.
